Thing is, I don't want to fall too far behind or else the kids won't be able to catch up. So I want to do them all now, but I'm not joking when I say I'm finding them literally more obnoxious than hunting Fiends in SMTIV. So I suspect I'm doing something wrong here. tongue

Hm, I didn't have too much trouble overall my first time through, and I didn't even use pair-up. Gerome's chapter expects you to have strong units. After chapter 17 is probably a better time to tackle it. If you must do it now, use fliers to pick the enemies off quickly. Worst comes to worst, ignore the villagers and hunker down in your own formation. Draw them in a few at a time in order to give yourself a chance to heal. Don't be afraid to let a few units hog most of the exp if they're the only ones that can easily kill the enemy. It happens and will make the playthrough much easier and more bearable.

[up] Thanks, but part of what I don't like about these chapters is that they're so much harder than the plot chapters that "come back later" is valid advice. I'm not knocking you, I think that speaks to a flaw in the game design.

Really, just abuse Rescue Staves and handle that paralogue like you would your standard Defend or Survive chapters in any other FE.

Of course, unless I'm grinding or know the enemy can't really hurt me, I always play defensively so taking my usual habits to the extreme is easy for me.

When it's easy to back out of them, it's not bad design. They're optional for a reason. And it allows for a nice optional challenge curve. Want something tough? Do the paralogues as soon as possible. Want to make it easier? Come back to it after a couple of story chapters.

[up][up][up]They're that hard because they're not really intended for someone at your point in the game. Unless you're pairing up their parent with the same character every single map you won't unlock these maps until much later. They follow a clear difficulty curve where the children of characters that join earlier (and thus likely reaches S support earlier) have easier maps than the children of characters that join later. This isn't the maps being too hard, this is sensible game design (although I really don't know why they made it possible to give a latecomer like Olivia instant S rank with Chrom, Maribelle is already heavily pushing it).

I'd argue part of the difficulty is the emphasis on flight in those chapters. The Great Gate is a bridge made of narrow hallways with two flier brigades swooping in at your team from the northwest and southwest, while Wyvern Valley consists of a few rock spires and rickety, hole-riddled bridges crisscrossed over empty air.

I sure said that!

[up][up] Wait... you're not supposed to pair the parents up with the same character every chapter?

That's exactly how I did it! DURRRR...

Well, there's nothing forcing you not to do it, but since you're not supposed to know about the children characters until after Chapter 13, there's not that much reason to do it.

Okay, that's Gerome's done. Thanks for putting up with me, guys. If nobody else finds the Paralogues as hard as I do I guess it must just be me then. Me set in my Blazing Sword ways...

I've decided to go back to the main story, or at least I would have if Severa hadn't grabbed a Reeking box at Random in the barracks.

I was literally writing this, when she got it. I'm on Chapter 22 right now (though I haven't done it yet) and I'm thinking about what I'm going to do next.

Still a lot of supports to be done among the kids (haven't done any mixed gender supports yet on purpose), so I gotta think about things. Want to level up everyone first as well.

Severa is like that.

She doesn't care what you want to do, she has an opinion and you're going to hear about it.

If everyone were normal, the world would be a dull place. Like reality television.

Unless you're Noire. Then she'll put up with a lot, even through her complaints.

... I think I wouldn't have liked Severa nearly as much if I hadn't supported her with Noire so early my first playthrough.

you can say that about a lot of characters.

i would have hated ricken much more than i do now if my first support for him hadnt been miriel.

i would have liked panne a lot more if she hadnt made a shitty first impression and i hadnt picked stalh to pair her up with.

i would have liked kjelle more if it hadnt taken 3 sets of supports to see her in a remotely likable fashion (aka, severaXkjelle, although gerome A was at least better than her three with brady)

and i wouldnt loathe nah if she wasnt the first person i attempted to set up with laurent (who thankfully, ran the fuck away from her after settling the pedophile accusations and settled down with lucina...shortly before dying in the final battle. -sheds a single tear- goodbye sweet laurent, we hardly knew ye.)

In all of my playthroughs, Severa meets with an unfortunate accidently shortly after joining the army.

So I think I'm just incompetent, myself. All these Paralogues are decently fun once I figure out when I'm supposed to do, so sorry if I was whiny.

"What I'm supposed to do" typically involves Rescue Staves, I've noticed...

I'm just glad you can buy them here; I recall them being pretty rare in Blazing Sword.

Severa always turned into my main killer once I got her.

Galeforce made her and Ignio a monstrous couple that carved bloody swathes through my foes.

Back to my original plan. Back to the plot. Chapter 22 ahoy!

Edit: Actually, scratch that. I gotta get ready for The 12th doctor, so it can wait.

My Assassin!Severa loves procing Lethality and absolutely cannot be touched with her 61 Speed. Seriously, her Defense and Resistance just might be the lowest of my StreetPass team but that doesn't matter since nothing can hit her.

Sorry. I was wrong. She has 62 Speed. Her father is Lon'qu but you also have to keep in mind that almost everyone in my StreetPass team has capped Limit Breaker stats.

Limit Breaker does what again? I've forgotten.

I always marry Cordelia and Lon'qu but I don't remember her speed getting that high.

It raises the caps of ever stat except HP by 10. The highest you can get your Severa's Speed to without it is 52.
