Touhou

Noice.

Are we still talking about how we we first introduced to Touhou? I'd been vaguely aware of it's existence towards the latter half of the 2000's but my first actual exposure to the series was back in the arse end of 2011 when I first stumbled across Touhou Mother. My first thought was "Wow. There are a lot of characters in Touhou." immediately followed by "A lot of the characters seem pretty cool. I wonder what the actual Touhou games are like."

A quick listen through some of the OSTs and a few rounds on the games left me hooked.

I saw that earlier today. While completely unexpected the cover is most definitely not unwelcome.

Reading the second half of Silent Sinner in Blue, here comes the controversial parts

• Project Sumiyoshi could have become an utter disaster. The crewmembers were seriously considering breaking the walls of the spacecraft to cook. This entire thing reminds me of the more nightmarish space scenes from The Immortal Who Saw The Death of The Universe. It's a wonder no one died in the scary place called space.
• If Meiling didn't make more appearances later in the series, this scene might explain why. 'XX' Yagokoro's being extra intimidating in chapter 11.
• The Sea of Tranquility, huh? We officially have a Beach Episode in Touhou.
• I don't want to reference TFS Abridged again, but Sakuya just Full-Nelsoned Yorihime and I... um...
• So Yorihime basically has unlimited bombs...
• Yorihime's powers in the danmaku fights definitely feels rather contrived. She kept summoning a bunch of different powers that completely counters everything thrown at her. The depiction made it looks like she didn't even do anything and just kept summoning gods to do her dirty work.
• Remilia's performance is rather disappointing after all her bragging. Sounds like something the Scarlet Devil Mistress would do, really.
• I can overall understand how the main crew got defeated, they went into the moon unprepared and this entire place is way too high level for them. It's like sequence breaking into a final dungeon midway through a game and getting wrecked by everything.
• I haven't read Toyohime's Ci LR yet but as far as the manga goes, her dialogue makes her sound like a moonbigot. An overly happy Reisen 2.0 doesn't help matters, it's like they're saying "You Gensokyans suck, we're clearly better in every way than you.".
• Apparently Silent Sinner has two Beach Episodes in total.

I have to say, after all the build up of a lunar war in the first half the second half feels rather disappointing. The moonsisters could have been depicted better, they seem like interesting characters in the first half. The danmaku fight really didn't translate well into manga form, I can sort of see why danmaku fights never seem to happen again in other mangas. In short, I expected a better fighting.

The Watatsuki sisters isn't actually that bad to get their 'moonbitch' title. They actually seem to be ok people to have tea with, provided we don't have lethal levels of impurity (read:any at all). However since too little bad things happened to them it's hard to sympathize or relate with them in any way, making them difficult to like. I don't hate them, but I don't like them either (Since I like every other Touhou characters, that's not a good sign).

Overall, the manga is not as bad as I thought it would be but I can definitely see why the moonsisters aren't well liked since their last few impressions in the last few chapters definitely left a bitter taste.

Moving on to another topic.

I first encountered Touhou in this here website of all places, since I keep noticing it and seeing its images in various trope pages until curiosity led me to the (at first) intimidatingly extensive Touhou pages. Am I the only one here to encounter Touhou that way?

It's how I got to know Touhou in its entirety as well. Not my first exposure, but close enough.

I'll admit that after I started to play the games I binged read the Touhou character page here. I then decided to take the incredibly stupid (but totally worth it) decision to read this forum tread from beginning to end...

The amount of creativity that goes on in here is absolutely mind boggling.

I think my first "real" exposure to Touhou was through the famous "Crying Alice" doujin series. Might or might not be one of the reasons I'm a huge Mari Ali shipper.

I'm one of the newer additions to the fan base, not even knowing about Touhou until a couple of years ago. Due to gradual exposure to it here on TV Tropes, I eventually crossed the event horizon into being a fan with a combination of the Sakuya vs. Dio OMM and one of the 3-D fanmade danmakku battle videos.

And then I realized how mind boggling the franchise... fandom... everything is.

@G.C.Mushroom: Thank you very much for sharing your impressions! Those are always welcome, and you put it very entertainingly. It is really mindboggling to think that this was indeed the only occurrence of a damaku fight in all of Touhou Manga, considering how important it is in the games.

Holy Jebus, this sounds amazing! Like... not an evolution of the old in-Universe-Encyclopedia format at all, just an alternative. We still get breakdowns of and articles on new chars, but in a humourous format that highlights their character tics, which is very entertaining!

And now we play the waiting game........

Heyyy, I know that one! Had it already bookmarked a whiiiile ago. I love the seamless transitions between the characters.
