Hmm, as you pointed out, they made a camera phone. The jump from that to a console isn't that big, is it? (not a rhetorical question, btw, I know §%$& about technical stuff)
It's not "can you?", it's "would you?". It seems doubtful that they'd come up with the idea on their own. And if they did create their own videogames, they probably wouldn't be safe for human use.

In terms of entertainment, they have very complex forms of shogi (more complex than this).

The camera phone doesn't seem to function as anything beyond a camera. And when told that Outside World technology doesn't mix well with water, Nitori is baffled by the concept, so it's possible that it doesn't work by conventional electronics.

@Prime32 Counter argument: The camera phone seemed to have been re-purposed from a real one, and there are lots of phones nowadays that are waterproofed.

Nah, the idea of technology in general not working in water seems odd to her. The phone was not related to this.

I dunno. Electronics don't seem to be their forte (Which makes sense, I guess. Traditional computers tend to fail pretty hardcore in water, and waterproofing cases still only skirts around the problem.) Their gadgets and achievements seem more mechanical in nature. If they do have a computer/electronics analog, it's probably water-powered and they use their racial touch to make it work, I figure.
... The way you guys are describing them, it seems like kappas normally live and do their work underwater. I mean, I know the mythological kappa is an aquatic creature, but...

Late response: the reason Rinnosuke thought that a Game Boy was an Artifact of Doom was because his Namedar power told him the device could control peoples' actions, create and destroy worlds, and various other crazy things... without telling him that said people and worlds were fictional and contained within the device itself.

His ability to know the name and function of things is a useful power, but not too useful.

... Oh man, this so damn priceless. Such mistaken assumptions could easily lead to a huge Incident if the "wrong"/"right" youkai hears about it, only for the whole thing to end up proving utterly pointless once it's revealed that the newfound Easy World Domination Tool fails to deliver no matter what one does. Cue Reimu and whoever that has been tagging along as her erstwhile comrade/sidekick throwing a fit about how much time they wasted and how much nerve-wracking grief they suffered for nothing.

By default I don't think most youkai would think that the Outside World has anything worth tapping into; they seem to regard anything interesting that crosses the border as a fluke.
Maybe, but I could see certain named youkai being interested enough to occasionally peek at what the latest popular thing is and the like, if only to amuse themselves with the Outside World's eccentricities.

However, the youkai think like this: all observations, phenomena, and all forms of reasoning behind them are true. This is precisely because all youkai were born from the thoughts behind the phenomena themselves.
... Wait, so there is no such thing as a youkai that existed naturally as a species of its own and ended up becoming the subject of human mythology?

Oh, أسف Marq, I couldn't get to your questions in time sad So, everyone already answered them very well, with Muenzuka, Gods-vs-Youkai, that stuff.
Nah, don't sweat it. I don't see why you need to apologize... and in Arabic, no less. Did you google that, or did you learn the language for some reason?

But yeah, the Kappa so far have not caused any major Incident, which, as you rightly assumed, should actually be the case, with all their tinkering and Mad Science. Instead, they now have a cucumber factory.
Instead, they now have a cucumber factory
have a cucumber factory
a cucumber factory
... Wait, what?

It's not "can you?", it's "would you?". It seems doubtful that they'd come up with the idea on their own. And if they did create their own videogames, they probably wouldn't be safe for human use.
Ah, but what if Remilia for example commissioned them to design a unique device to do this or that for her own purposes? (Granted, it might not work fully as intended, because when does stuff like this ever do?)

In particular the "core" of one type of god before you add faith is a divine spirit, which on its own is considered a youkai

Pretty sure this is wrong. I can't think of any instance where a divine spirit was treated as a youkai.

The cucumber "factory" is an indoor garden. Y'know, the scientific kind. I'd call it more of a laboratory.

I believe that would be classified as a cryptid, not a youkai.

A chupacabra show up in the manga and Mamizou says that technically it's an UMA (Japanese acronym for Unidentified Mysterious Animal: Cryptid), not a youkai. But then she acts like the distinction doesn't matter all that much.

[up]And we can't really be sure if the chupacabra "existed before humans" or if it came into being a while ago because of the Urban Myth. The latter seems more likely in Touhou. Which makes it so close to a Youkai, that, yes, like you said, that distinction doesn't matter any more. Especially since, if you are a foreign creature of any kind (like the Scarlet Sisters, for example), if you stay in Gensokyo for a bit, you automatically become "adopted"/classified as a Youkai.

@Marq:

The way you guys are describing them, it seems like kappas normally live and do their work underwater.

Well, if I remember correctly, which is never guaranteed, then, yes, that is indeed the case grin Pretty sure we got confirmation in one book that their cities are indeed underwater. We at least never got to see a land-based one.

And, yes, I used the term "cucumber factory" pretty much for exactly THAT effect on you winkwink Clarste explained it better.

I don't see why you need to apologize...

There wasn't one, yeah (not that that ever stopped me before; this is pretty much how I behave all the time in RL); gotta be honest, just was looking for an easy phrase to Google wink Which answers...

and in Arabic, no less. Did you google that, or did you learn the language for some reason?

Yeah, Googled it, gotta be honest smile I kinda made that My Thing as of late: since I really super love that this thread brings together all of us from so many cool, diverse parts of the world, I just like to occasionally use one phrase from their mother tongue when talking with them smile<3<3 اتمنى لك يوما طيبا! (Sidenote: was cool to realize that it automatically switched to writing right to left after I had copy-pasted it!)

About gods, I think people forget too often that Sanae is also a god. A "god" in Touhou-verse is simply something that received power through faith. Be it human (Sanae), divine spirit (Kanako), or faith itself (Suwako). And there are odd cases like Shou, who is a former youkai turned god (or a god's avatar).

... Wait, so there is no such thing as a youkai that existed naturally as a species of its own and ended up becoming the subject of human mythology?

In Touhou-verse, youkai are creatures created to explain unknown phenomenons. When the actual explanation behind said phenomenon is found, the youkai loses their purpose and might disappear. For example, the yamabiko is on the verge of extinction because people learned that echo is reflected sound, not monkey-cat-things shouting back at you.

Speaking of which, the origin of kappa never fails to amuse me. note

Awwwwwww sadsadsad ...I'll have to trust you guys about the size logistics of it, then.

But... hooooow bad is it? I mean, I'd say the only objective of the Pic Of Everyone on the Characters Page is to give a one-glance-impression of "HOLY §%$& that is a lot of characters!". You know, for newcomers (certainly piqued my interest when I first came here). It would still do that even if you couldn't make out everyone, right? For a good look at each character, there is the pic of the Symposium cover on the Main Page and, obviously, the individual char pages.

[down]Completely true, no argument there smile

I still remember the former store Paletweb like it was yesterday. That was the first place where I learned that Touhou figures do, in fact, exist.

But what happened to it, exactly? One day, it just... refused to open out of nowhere, as if it had kinda spontaneously combusted out of existence.
