I would call Marisa clearly the worst character here, mostly because her unfocused shot is ridiculously bad.

Does that ever matter? It's not like the game has many times you really need to unfocus

...Assuming you're actually referring to Marisa's poor coverage, I still think Reimu is worse— her homing shot is slow and weak, and she's saddled with the worst focused shot on top of that

That's what she gets for not undergoing a shounen protagonist training regime!

It's not just poor coverage, Marisa's unfocused is ridiculously weak and cannot kill anything. Reimu's homing shots are better at killing stuff even within Marisa's range. A lot of stages have places that are trivialized by Reimu's and Sanae's spread killing enemies before they fire shots. There's actually an entire chapter in stage 5 where Marisa literally cannot kill anything because all the fairies leave the screen before she can do enough damage, and this adds up to way more bullets to dodge. Reisen isn't too great either, but at least she has a piercing shot for Sagume and the most ridiculous bomb ever for Legacy mode. I can't really think of any situation that Marisa is actually good at.

Oh yeah, Reimu seems to scale with power a bit differently from the others for whatever reason. Her homing shots are totally useless at low power, but awesome at max power.

Actually, I have it on good authority that Reimu's tiny hitbox means she has the easiest time fighting Junko, with her tight-gapped bullet walls.

Also Reisen's bomb seems to make her hitbox bigger, which could lead to bad habits.

I tried that, and it turns out that I'm not actually good enough at these games to even take advantage of a small hitbox: my movements aren't precise enough.

Reimu Legacy

The Hakurei Shrine. A shrine in the far east.

Sanae: Um... the moon rabbits are still on the mountain, but...
Reimu: I know. There was just an unforeseen circumstance.
Sanae: Unforeseen circumstance?
Reimu: I thought I was going out to protect us from being invaded by the Lunar Capital, but that turned out to be a lie. There was a much more terrifying foe. She was invading the Lunar Capital, and the Lunarians used me to save the moon. Apparently the enemy was in a place that only people from the surface could get to, or something like that.
Sanae: I see... There was that ultramarine elixir too, right? I know you were given it before you went.
Sanae: Wait, shouldn't the moon rabbits have withdrawn by now then?
Reimu: About that... I didn't use the ultramarine elixir. And I guess I screwed up.
Sanae: What? You didn't use it?
Reimu: Well, you know, who knows what she put in there?

The moon rabbits did not cease their investigation of Gensokyo. Apparently they could be neither seen nor felt by youkai. But it was a relaxed enough atmosphere to idly wonder whether or not they were serious about invading. However, a few days later a moon rabbit suddenly came to the shrine.

Reimu: Sheesh, so you've made it all the way to the shrine already?
Ringo: Oho, So this is the Earth shrine? You're keeping it pretty tidy.
Reimu: What's with the suspicious praise?
Ringo: Your shrine's pretty famous among the moon rabbits.
Reimu: Oh? And why would that be?
Ringo: According to the rabbits who've been here in the past, it's a rare place that you'd expect to be sacred but instead coexists with youkai. I've always wanted to visit it at least once. I wanna see all sorts of youkai.
Reimu: I can't believe those rumors spread even to the moon... Don't you guys hate all the kegare on the surface though? Youkai are nothing but kegare.
Ringo: Eh, kegare is only really a problem for the Lunarian nobility. Us underlings don't really care either way.

Afterward, youkai came to the shrine like usual, but the moon rabbits could be perceived normally. Apparently this was an effect of the scouting vehicle from the Lunar Capital, to prevent kegare-afflicted beings from approaching. In other words, they didn't want to provoke Gensokyo's youkai. Perhaps you could think of the entire invasion plan drafted by Sagume as showing that they didn't really want to have to fight the youkai.

Ending #2: Coexistence with Moon Rabbits

Best ending in so many ways.

Sanae: Um... the moon rabbits are still on the mountain, but...
Are you sure she actually means ",but..." in that case? I assume she's ending the sentence with "kedo...", which technically means "but", but in a construction like that, I think it's usually supposed to be something more like "now I don't want to be a big old bother or anything, but I'm just saying..."... The way you phrased it in the translation makes it sound more like she has a problem unrelated to the rabbits, which I don't think is the case.

I don't think hermits are lifeless in the same way the Lunarians are.
I had a feeling as I was writing that post that something doesn't seem right... but hermits don't even abstain from alcohol, do they? I don't even know if ZUN would qualify alcohol as something impure or as something purifying or what. There's a lot of unclear stuff going on in these metaphysics.

@Clarste: Thank you sooo much as usual for your great work in bringing us these endings! grin[tup]

But maaaaan, I was already overwhelmed with all the regular LOLKAT stuff evil grin, and now all this! There's soooo much info! And what is infuriating is that WE HAVE NO IDEA which, if any, of all these interesting events in the game and the endings ACTUALLY happened, gah. For example, these Legacy Endings. They are all completely proper endings, some with really good twists and info. That really makes me doubt the earlier stance of "Legacy Mode isn't real, only Pointdevice matters!". ZUN doesn't seem to think so, judging from the care he put into these alternate continuities.

And why do the chars in the Legacy Endings all talk about "having screwed up"?! They succeeded just as well in the game, right? They beat the same enemies and solved the Incident, and put even more work into it. What's up with that? It's not like a Bad Ending, right?

But man, so much stuff. The extended version of the rumoured Yukari Ending, which did calm my Anti-Yukari-Rage a bit (yeah, she was still useless, but at least she makes it seem as if she had a plan?). Confirmation that RINGO AND LOTS OF OTHER MOONBUNNIES now regularly hang out in Gensokyo gringrin (that BETTER be canon and shown in a manga!!). And:

Apparently this was an effect of the scouting vehicle from the Lunar Capital

Is that FINALLY an explanation for these WEIRD-ASS metal spiders that were offhandedly mentioned soooo long ago!? 'cause they really were never explained! O_O

So, looking back at the prologue with these new information...

The metallic spider was not the Lunarians starting their terraforming project, but was just an invisibility cloak for their scouting party (and the withering of the plants was a side-effect of the purification-based cloaking)

What Kaguya and Eirin were talking about was not a plural "them" (Lunarians) but a singular "them" (Junko).

But why does Eirin say that the earth Youkai likely won't be able to interfere?

Although I´m still a bit crossed with Junko. Guess I will have to wait for more info about her to truly understand her.

That makes me wonder how it works for half-humans, though. Admittedly, there aren't many. (Youmu and Rinnosuke I think are the only ones?) But it's one of those questions that seems like it'd either be funny or have an extremely meaningful answer.

I mean, possibilities include:

  • Can only half-see them
  • Can literally only see half of them
  • Can see the soul but not the body
  • Can't see them, because half-youkai means youkai
  • Can see them, which would raise a LOT of questions
  • Have the two forget each other immediately afterwards (which puts half-humans in a situation similar to Koishi)

And there are so many different kinds of youkai, it almost makes me wonder if the statement in the ending is just more general - "they had escaped the notice of Gensokyo's youkai using their stealth technology" rather than "their stealth technology makes it so that youkai, as a category of being, are unable to perceive them while other sorts of beings are."

Based on Clarste's post, seems like the stealth was an area effect of the metallic spider rather than from the Moon Rabbits themselves.

That said, have the Moon Rabbits gone native in Gensokyo, or are they just on shore leave? If the former, does this mean Reisen now has Moon Rabbit minions in Eientei (Since that's the place most likely to take them in)?
