久須里婆古

The English translation for the last entry in the Touhou Reireimu Series is out.

? Google tells me it's related to Motoori Norinaga, but what exactly is tat?

Oh hahaha that's a hilariously specific reference. It's a peculiar use of kanji based on their pronunciation, similar to the way Japanese gangs use it, though in Motoori's case, he was actually writing in linguistically respectable man'yo gana - there's a trope here for that.

久須里 = kusuri = 薬 = medicine; 婆古 = bako = 箱 = box

Motoori Norinaga also acted as a doctor. As you can see here, his medicine box is covered by paper, with "久須里婆古" written on it. For him, it's probably an in-joke of his own.

That page also has a photo of his bell collection, which is what Kozusu's name come from.

The note can be written this way:

The kanji on the box, 久須里婆古, is man'yōgana (insert concise explanation of man'yōgana) for "kusuri bako", or "medicine box". This is a reference to Motoori Norinaga, and so on.

Forbidden Scrollery 21. Rough Draft. In which the class-based tensions between the old hereditary nobility and the rising economic power of the merchant class come to a head and tear apart Kosuzu and Akyuu's relationship in a single panel joke. Also some stuff and rats and rabbits.

For reference, the name of the product has a somewhat liberal translation.

It would have been less of a plot twist if these chapters came in color. Until the hat got knocked off, I thought it might be a surprisingly tall Nazrin pulling a scam similar to the Shou picture thing.

And apparently the human village told Eientei that they don't want to deal with bunny girls anymore. Possibly incredibly dickish unless Tewi and/or one of the Tewi-ettes did something offscreen. I'm just going to assume its dickishness though.

Reisen used INITIATIVE! It was Super Effective! Thus, she got punished for it. Rabbits should know their place.

Poor Akyuu's kitty....

There's nothing against bunny girls per se, they just have to hide it in the village (even if everyone knows). A kind of Don't Ask Don't Tell thing. I thought it was a clever way of reconciling Human Village racism with past vending canon.

On a tangential note, I wonder if I should translate her title here as "moon rabbit of the Earth" to make contradiction in it more explicit.

I assume the cat came back, the very next day.

Man, I did like this chapter. And the reveal actually caught me completely by surprise! I had really expected some supernatural or mystical background for all this, as usual... but instead, we got some new, awesome characterization for SUPER SECRET ÜBER SPOILER CHARACTER. Loved it. ...well ^^ the ending for said character is really sad kinda, but also par for the course.

Man, as usual, the Gensokyo of the games and the mangas seems so kinda different... concerning the frequency of everyone fighting everyone for no reason whatsoever, and that this never happens in the mangas. Like here, with Marisa and SUPER SECRET ÜBER SPOILER CHARACTER. Although... there might have been an awesome, spectacular Danmaku Battle offscreen, in addition to the chase. Yeah, that's probably it.

Haha ^^ Yeah, that was a nice moment. Understandable from Akyuu's POV, but still kinda dickish from her (insert "Privileged" or "1%" comment here).

Well, it's not super spoilery but it's just polite to spoil the next few posts. Might be enough space by now.

Not sure if this is what people are reacting to, but I wrote that Eirin was "a bit mad" which in retrospect sounds a bit sarcastic and "ironic understatement" which I did't really intend. The Japanese emphasized that it was non-serious anger. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids. Again though, I can't tell if that's what people are reacting to. Also I assume the scream at the bottom of the panel was Reimu from the next scene.

I was thinking about who it could be, but before the completely spoilerish reveal, a certain song started playing on my playlist, which made me slap my forehead because that just made too much sense.

Honestly the best thing I've read relating to Touhou since Komachi laughing at Kasen's inclusion in a certain festival.

Also, glad it wasn't an understatement. Never been fond of the "Eirin is an evil sadist" interpretation I sometimes see.

If Eirin ever saw Who Framed Roger Rabbit she would know its a hate crime to yank on a rabbit's ears like that.

Its also just not very respectful. It says "I don't trust you to stay still while I talk to you about this thing you did wrong."

And "my mild disapproval causes you literal pain."

Gotta say, though, nice to see her portrayed as intelligent.

And I, too, am happy to see spoiler character here doing something on their own. They just jump a dozen or so ranks in my popularity chart, I think.

That would make for an overflow error on my ranking list. But maybe two ranks would be more realistic.
