I'd have thought the difference in reference area would've been significant.
And that's how I ended up in the wardrobe. It Just Bugs Me!I don't see why everyone was so shocked and appalled about Obama getting the prize (and yes, I recognise that he'd done nothing to deserve it at that point).
Henry Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Yes, that Henry Kissinger. The guy who backed the Cambodian Incursion and helped the Khmer Rouge gain a foothold.
That award's credibility has been dead for a long, long time.
What's precedent ever done for us?I was more hoping on a rousing discussion on the guy who actually got the award here but oh well.
In any case China's reaction is pretty typical for any state. I doubt that if they gave this to say the Basque separatist leader for promoting the rights of the Basque people that Spain would be very happy.
It's not that I don't like Liu, he is a pro-democracy guy afterall, it's just that he never actually accomplished anything. It just feels more like an award just to spite China rather than do anything helpful. Afterall, the biggest reformer for democratic change in China is the Premier, Wen Jiabao. They probably censor any sort of disagreements that arise between Wen Jiabao and the president Hu Jintao. Wen actually made changes, he improved everything from media access to free speech to economic freedoms to minority rights. He was one of the guys who had a loudspeaker at the Tienanmen square protests. Will he ever get an award for the lives he tried to improve? Never, because he is a leader of China and it's hip to rag on China, just like yesterday it was hip to rag on America under Bush. (I blame that one on Bush though)
But I suppose the peace prize has always been silly.

Well, Nobel was an awesome guy. He invented dynamite and the Myth Busters already proved that dynamite is awesome, so there's not much more to say.
Fight smart, not fair.Recently, ICAN was given the NPP for their involvement in raising awareness with the anti-nuke treaty.
Plenty of experiments have presumably never been tried - but it doesn't require the talent usually assumed of a Nobel prize winner.
Would you kill your best friend, can you save yourself?
