I heavily disagree. Monster's not exactly a gateway anime, calling it overrated is serious exaggeration.

How would Light learn about Johan in the first place, though?

And how would Johan learn about Light really? Unless this scenario is directly after L's broadcast - Light was effectively untouchable until that blunder.

monster is just "overrated" because it's one of only two urasawa works that got an anime adaptation for whatever reason, so it's the one that most people know about (the other is master keaton). i haven't finished either it or 20th century boys yet, i could see 20CB being better at the end but they're both great.

Eh, I feel like Monster is the superior work, mostly because it always stays grounded. It is all, if not plausible, then at least possible. 20th century boys starts veering a bit into science fiction and the paranormal by the end.

But, whichever work you prefer, they all have noses.
