Well, unless you're playing Imperishable Night. If I remember, going for a deathbomb gives you a more powerful bomb (albeit at the cost of two bombs being used up at once).
IN actually makes deathbombing way worse because it costs extra bombs. It's the least forgiving in that respect.
And I would deathbomb because I didn't realize I wanted to bomb until half a second before I died? Intentionally deathbombing is the wrong way to look at it in the first place. It's a "get out of death free" card.

MoF actually encourages deathbombing because otherwise you lose 3000 Faith Points. In fact, when I play for score, I occasionally ram a bullet intentionally for the express purpose of deathbombing without losing Faith Points.

Extra 1: Poochy Ain't StupidThe 2-bomb deathbombing in IN is disadvantageous for scoring or gaining time orbs, because it maximizes your youkai/human meter in the direction of the character you are not controlling (the bomb Last Spell is cast by that character, obviously representing her coming to rescue of your current character). This in practice often means completely reversing your meter.
Oh, and your accumulated time orbs are already lost when deathbombing.
However, there is in fact one tiny window in IN for 1-bomb deathbombing...

Stop atrican from crawling out of the dumpster! Touhou status updatesI played this danmakufu Project based on a RP in create.swf in deviantArt. It's half-related to Touhou but I'd like to divulgate, here. I thought the author made a good work in danmaku, so I'm posting here if anyone is interested. Also, it doesn't need danmakufu or applocale to work.

My work is here. Current main fic: Tengen Toppa Gurren Solvernia
It's possible to use a Last Spell with one bomb left in stock in IN, and deathbombing doesn't cost you faith in MoF. Those are all of the mechanical advantages I'm aware of
