By the way, the different effects that appear when an enemy is finished off by a different element in IV seem to have a prototype in this one.

You got the protective cold gear from that worker, right? That'll greatly cut down on much of the damage the enemies there can dish out.

Also, how does one best get lower-level DARK demons in this game? Doing that was the bane of my existence in SJ and it seems to be similarly difficult here.

Fuse elements into the higher level ones until they start going down their chain.

incidentally, victor also shows up in the raidou kuzunoha games as the fusion expert there, too.

There's a great deal of reason to think his full name is Victor Frankenstein, too- If noohing else, take it from him; The Arctic Circle isn't a fun place to be.

Victor Frankenstein, yeah. In some versions, Victor von Frankenstein.

He's heavily implied to be him.

And the original novel ends with the Doctor Fankenstein giving chase to The Creature into the Arctic.

So yeah, while there's two subseries that feature Frankenstein references as the fusion conductors in Mido's place, Devil Summoner is less subtle with it than Persona is, despite Persona dropping more names.

Just grabbed Record Breaker yesterday, and I don't remember it being this hard. It's fun though, and the English dub voices aren't bad (Fem!Tico is ear-grating, but I think that that was the point).

Is there anything you gain in SH (like Sources in SJ and Whispers in IV) from keeping your demons around in this one, or can you just fuse them?

I think you can just fuse them. The demons don't gain levels in this, if I remember correctly.

Again, save for Zeed, albeit via a different method than Protag and Nemissa.

You mean Victor Frankenstein from Devil Summoner was supposed to be subtle? Cause I keyed in to who the mad doctor was the second I saw him and I hadn't known of his existence until that moment. The fact that he's wearing the exact outfit the good Doctor wears in the 1931 Frankenstein film was a good giveaway.

EDIT: So every method I know of for hotlinking doesn't work on that damn film...

What? No, no, I meant Igor and his assistants are a less-direct series of references than Victor is. Victor does everything short of outright say "man, Nezha sure looks a lot like an old acquaintance of mine."

The Velvet siblings names also reference Frankenstein. Liz and Margaret are named after Elizabeth Lavenza and Margaret Walton Saville, characters from the original book. Dunno who Theo's named after, though.

The monster from Frankenstein is also one of the guys overseeing fusion in Devil Children.

Alongside some human named Parallel Soot.

So the monster was actually in a game at one point? Have we ever had Dracula? That's someone I'd expect to see in one of these games.

He was in SMTII and all Devil Children games and their animes/card game/manga.

The wiki even has him. I mean he's not that hard to find just look up Franken.

We had generic vampires, nosferatu, Kudlak, the strix, and strigoi, but I don't think Dracula himself ever appeared in any games.

Does anyone know if those strange voices Flynn hears in his dream at the beginning of IV mean anything? Some of them are just moans, others are direct quotes from the Bible, but there's a few others that don't seem to mean anything.

The only one that sounds familiar to me is the one about the horn piercing the heavens and the planet being trampled; there's a passage in the Book of Daniel relating to a huge, horned beast said to trample the Earth at the end of days. Ironically enough, this beast is said to be slain by the Ancient of Days to save the world, and in this game the Ancient is trying to destroy the world!
