A Game of Gods: A Multiversal Challenge

"Here," said Hahli, rushing over to him. "I'll help. Lean on me."

Ravage prowled over to the rubble pile with some difficulty, wincing as sparks jetted from the damaged hip actuator. Hopefully this challenge would be over soon; he didn't relish the thought of trying to complete it with only three legs.

The jaguar's ears flattened against his head as he caught sight of Juliet. The prepubescent girl lay atop the rocks, spread-eagled and unmoving, and her flesh was notably pale. If she was breathing, Ravage could not detect any trace of such biological functions taking place.

"Slag," he hissed. "Get over here, she might be dead! Doctor, say nothing of this to the boy."

"What?!" Jorge blurted out, surprised. "Hahli, this alien just tried to kill Ravage, who had-"

As if on cue, Ravage reported Juliet's status. The Spartan's heart sank. "Juliet could be dead because of him. Hmph, if she is, we've lost. Why should we help him?"

"What?!" Gordon questioned. He'd heard the commotion, hell, he'd seen it. He'd figured it had something to do with his compatriats.

"What the hell happened?!" Gordon yelled into the com.

"No time to explain, Gordon! Find Juliet, she should be close by, but...chances are, her vitals are critical. She may even be KIA."

Mecha Sonic landed. "SUBJECT NO LONGER POSES A THREAT TO UNIT. TERMINATE NOW." He pointed his gun at Saren.

"I believe so," said Hahli.

"Shit," Gordon swore.

"Romeo, stay here with Eddie," he said, turning to the young man and gestuering to the roadie. With that, Gordon turned and made his way through the crowds, searching for anything unusual.

"What the-?! Where did he come from?" Jorge's gun was too far away for him to retrieve it at the moment, so he drew his combat knife. "Hahli, eyes ahead!"

"Metal Sonic, please," said Hahli, her voice radiating sincerity. "This man is badly hurt."

-Saren's eyes widen, then narrow in annoyance bordering on anger-

-Blue miasma wraps around the Turian, then the robot, then Saren hisses in pain, circuits shorting in the back of his neck-

Ravage padded slowly over to the prone girl, sniffing inquisitively. He did not particularly care if this human died—he would be rather glad to be rid of such an annoying pest, as a matter of fact—but her death would most likely result in the failure of this challenge, and the jaguar was not exactly keen to find out what failure entailed.

Gordon came to a vast field of rubble, remeniscent of what he had last seen in City-17. The memory brought a pang of guilt. What had happened to Alyx? The last he'd seen of her, she'd been hacking into a Combine console. Was the battle still going on back 'home'?

He pushed the thought from his mind when he saw ravage up ahead. He actived his H.E.V suit's sprint function and made his way towards them as fast as he could.

"What happened?" he demanded, his tone urgent.

"An explosion," the jaguar rasped. "The fool Arterius tried to attack me, and I defended myself; his attempts to counter my attack resulted in a powerful shockwave which leveled this part of the city and sent the girl flying. She landed here, as you can see."

"Don't worry about him." Jorge flexed his fingers, waiting for Mecha Sonic to make a move.

"Where were you when the shockwave happened?" Gordon asked. He wasn't the right kind of doctor to figure out if Juliet would make it, but depending on where Ravage had been, there was a chance the girl would be alright.

"SUBJECT SHOWED ABILITY TO ACTIVATE AND DEACTIVATE UNIT, WHY SHOULD UNIT HESITATE TO KILL HIM?"

Overkill Doc-kaff-tor. I was putting on a play, and told him such. My medi-gel was destroyed by the shockwave.

Ravage shot the badly-damaged SPECTRE a murderous look, but restrained himself.

"It wasn't far, doctor; no more than twelve of your human metres. The arc was shallow, so she most likely did not gain any considerable speed before landing."

"You were putting on a play?" Jorge glared at Saren. "You may have just killed the person we needed to win here!"

"Where was she when the explosion happened?" Gordon repeated. "The outside? The center? Somewhere inbetween?"

-Fangs are bared, despite the fact that one mandible is nearly falling off-

Before the shot was fired, human. Have you bothered to notice that I have not tried to kill a single man today?

"I was holding her clear of the thrust emitter of my rocket when the explosion occured; that should have placed her at ground zero, or close to it."

Gordon relaxed. "If she was near the center of the shockwave, she's probably just unconscious."

He pressed two fingers again Juliet's neck, searching for a pulse, and, upon finding it, relaxed even further.

"Thank god, I don't even want to know what happens if we fail these challenges."
