I'm seeing it for the exact same reason you are.
...Plus the trailer actually makes it look good.
Heh, it's funny, the trailer did nothing for me... and then I noticed who directed it, and I was suddenly interested.
Fincher can put an interesting thing on just about anything, honestly.
I hate Brendan SteereStill not interested. Even if the director did Fight Club.
Not just Fight Club, man. Se7en, Zodiac, Benjamin Button - all fantastic.
I mean, I won't lie - I'm not going to be first in line to see The Social Network, but I'm at least interested. Fincher's one of the most consistently excellent mainstream directors working today, so I'll at least give him the ticket money and support intelligent filmmaking.
And besides, Eisenberg was great in Adventureland.

I hate Brendan SteereOk Fight Club, Zodiac, and Se7en. Still not interested. I think a movie on a roughly 10 year old invention (not really sure how old it is even though I use it) would be better as a tv documentary special. Not a 2 hour movie that I have to spend 8 bucks to see.

Wasn't a Benjamin Button fan, eh?
I'm not so sure that's fair, though. Just because a film is a commentary on a contemporary social phenomenon doesn't necessarily mean it has to suck.
Look at Wall Street back in the 80s. ANY Italian Neorealist film. Fanboyism for Fincher aside, he's a consistently intelligent director, so if anyone can do it...
I hate Brendan SteereNever seen Benjamin Button, Wall Street, etc. So I can't comment on if they are good or not.
Just the idea of a movie on a website is silly. What's next Youtube? Myspace? Twitter?
Gotcha. Check Benjamin out some time if you've got an afternoon to kill. It's a lot more gutsy than the Forrest Gump rip-off it looks like it's going to be.
I do understand your point, though. About the movie-about-a-website thing. I must admit it's never been done right...
It's a problem that will have to be addressed eventually, though. I mean, in a decade or so, kids will have grown up never knowing a world WITHOUT an internet and instant-access media and information. I think not to address that in film would be... well... silly. It would be like making a movie without cars in it.
But, like I said, I see where you're coming from, without a doubt. And who knows, maybe Fincher's not the right man for the job.
Now if it were Edgar Wright...
I hate Brendan Steereyeah, just the idea of watching a movie about facebook.
Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?"Look at Wall Street back in the 80s."
Oliver Stone directed that. (unless you were meaning something else entirely).
"What's next Youtube? Myspace? Twitter?"
@ the topic in general: I may just see this for how melodramatic it looks. Honestly, my first impression of it was it would be a cheesy, but enjoyable film to watch if I'm bored. Not on my priority list though.

I must admit I'm a bit flabbergasted that they made a movie about Facebook. I wouldn't think that would make for a particularly gripping tale.
What's next, a movie about You Tube?
It seems to be about all the backstabbing, scheming, and questionable behavior in its founding.
What's the frequency Kenneth?|In case of war.^Don't forget the random, half-naked chick who shows up in the trailer.
Instant audience, just add naked chick!
No, that was disconnected from the Fincher thoughts. I was giving an example of a well-done commentary on a contemporary (at the time) social phenomenon.
Forgive my discombobulated mind, it's been a very long day...
I hate Brendan SteereFor those wondering about a youtube movie, I think Cracked did a parody trailer of this movie using youtube. I found it really hilarious.
As for this movie...I dunno, I mean Fincher's awesome, but I think I'll wait and see what people say about it first. And even if it does get good reviews I'll probably wait for the DVD to rent or something.
Also speaking of wall street, in the theatres once I saw a poster for a wall street sequel with Shia Le Beouf - Please tell me that isn't true.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps? Hopefully he can be decent in it.
What's the frequency Kenneth?|In case of war.But does a film like Wall Street really need a sequel?
It's already sorta been said, but this isn't a movie about facebook. It's a movie about the founding of facebook. One would be a terrible idea, the other not so much.
^Actually, I read somewhere (will try to find the article) that the creators of Facebook were annoyed because the movie over-dramatized/added some stuff that didn't happen.
^ As well any film should. Nothing annoys me more than a movie 'based on a true story'.
You've got to approach every film as a fiction and take it on its own merits. Whether The Social Network will be a GOOD fiction or not is an entirely different question...
I hate Brendan SteereIt's a movie about the founding of Facebook, but not about Facebook...a distinction without a difference.
Yes, I know what you're saying and that wasn't directed at you. I'm just surprised Fincher took this on. Couldn't this have been direct-to-DVD, though?
You know, the Facebook movie.
IMDB page, Wikipedia page.
Is anyone else planning on seeing it? I am, but only because of David Fincher.
