Like. According to Xehanort and Yen Sid the War was fought over it.
But in the browser version the War has been and gone (mostly, except for some secret thing on the 29th) and the thing hasn't even been mentioned yet.

Is Unchained X the real Keyblade War? My impression was that it's a dream the protagonist is having about the actual event.

Just beat Lingering Will in 2.5. If anyone asks, I did it without any abilities or items equipped, using the Sweet Memories, on level 1 Critical on the first try.
I didn't, I actually cheesed him with the negative combo strategy and I'm on Normal, but if anyone ever asks you "How did that sexy beast Eagal beat Lingering Will?" you say that first thing I said.

Kingdom Hearts X
ends on September 1st. The last major story update dropped on the 25th. There's only one small update left on the 29th. So.
Nomura: I cannot explain this without any spoilers but there is a connection between the two. Who is trying to do what will be depicted in KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi] or KINDGOM HEARTS Unchainedχ, and the reason behind it would be told in KHχ Back Cover (included in 2.8).
-There will be a clear divergence...!?
N: "After presenting the final chapter, there should be about one month left until we close the servers in September. As of now, [K Hx] has become quite easy to play, so we want to try to take that chance to continue moving the story forward."
-What will happen with [KH Unchained X]?
N: "Since we want to keep it running for a long time, we're continuing our plans for new worlds and the storyline. The story for [K Hx] will come to an end, but [KH Unchained X] will have new developments... A story for “season 2” will begin."

I get the feeling that Nomura and co. consider Unchained to be the "true" version of events while X is just a prologue and the X-Blade will show up there.

Watched that ending video on the last page. Poor sad PC. Also, whoever on tumblr that was who noted that the Foretellers don't seem to have much of the sin they're named after was spot on. Aced's dedicated enough to want to conquer the world and proactive enough to kill you just in case you turn out to be a threat. Invi acts all compassionate even when being a boss fight, and kindness is the virtue counterpart to envy. Ira defends the PC from Aced and cares a lot about the harmony of the world. Ava evidently stays behind in the rainy wartorn land while offering the Dandelions the presumably better outside world. I guess the reason there's no apprentice named after pride is that they'd be too humble to accept such a prestigious role.

Well the area is flooded with light at the end when Player is collapsed and probably dying. It kinda reminded me of when Xehanort summoned Kingdom Hearts in BBS. Chances are something happened regarding the x-blade, it's just off screen right now. Or you know Player got kidnapped by Skuld and Ephermer right before it got forged or something. IDK.

But. Why would the X-Blade need to be forged? It's supposed to be older than the Keyblades.
(KHUX) I'm in round 85 and rank 596 in the Coliseum now... so I'd be pissed if I slip off Rank 1000 by the end of the month.
Also Weekend Warrior is up as usual, and they still haven't "patched" the Lux of the fortress crab so I'm beating up on it again.

My impression is that it's the Keyblade's true form but it can't be summoned under normal circumstances.
But it's not a keyblade. It's the thing the keyblades are based on.
From The Glossary of Dream Drop Distance:
If Kingdom Hearts is a lock, then this blade from the age of fairy tales was the key.
It could be argued that without the χ-blade, the Keyblade War might never have been waged; after all, you cannot possess what you cannot find or unlock.
It is clear the blade was the inspiration for human-wrought Keyblades. The letter χ can be pronounced both "key" or "kye" (leading to some confusion) and symbolizes the perfect crossing of light and darkness. The χ-blade can be forged via a high-dimensional clash between those two poles.
