Troper Updates II, Part II

In which we get updates from the lives of tropers. Kinda like Twitter with more than 140 characters, but less than a blog or LJ.

Please refrain from excess venting in this thread. Talking about negative emotions is fine but it's best not to dwell on them for too long. TV Tropes is not suited to deal with mental health situations.

I'm not sure if there's a way I can phrase this that will adequately convey the basic idea without making me seem like a massive hypocrite and/or idiot, but I'm going to try.

I believe in giving with no expectation of getting anything in return.

I take beau out to dinner and get him a gift on his birthday because I believe that's the least I can do to make him feel like I give a damn.

I do not do this because I believe it will somehow "earn" me the same treatment in return. Generosity in the hopes of reciprocity is not true generosity.

That said, completely unrelated to whether or not I did it for him, independent of any ideas about reciprocity or give-and-take or anything like that, I want him to do that for me because it's what I see as the appropriate way to observe your significant other's birthday.

It's not a matter of "I did it for you so why aren't you doing it for me", it's a matter of "Everyone should do this for their significant other, so uh, what's up?"

EDIT: Which is also why I don't say things like "Well I did X, Y and Z for your birthday, so where's my X, Y and Z?" I just say things like "So uh, just FYI, it is my birthday..."

...I wouldn't do that. I don't tend to do things for other people unless I know that they want me to, and I'm willing to.

Anything for somebody's birthday unless I knew they wanted me to. I wouldn't make them meals (because I don't cook much anyway), I wouldn't buy them a gift (unless I had a good idea of what they wanted), and I probably wouldn't carry out any sexual favors I didn't want to. ;p

But then, those don't usually take as much time or money...

So if your significant other didn't specifically ask you, you would let their birthday go totally unobserved?

Note that I'm specifically talking about romantic relationships here. I don't really do jack shit for my friends other than tell them happy birthday, and maybe buy them something if something catches my eye in a store and I know they'd like it. (Or if I'm going to a birthday party. It's kind of a dick move to show up to a party empty-handed.)

But with a romantic relationship, it just strikes me as really disrespectful to let a birthday slide by unnoticed.

Edit: Oh yeah, and definitely no on the unwanted sexual activity. Consent doesn't work any differently just because of somebody's birthday.

I'd say happy birthday and ask what I could do for them...

Well my guy's birthday is in November. If we even last that long as friends, I might ask what I could do for him then.

It's in the timing and how well you two know each other. If being treated on your birthday is important to you, you should let him know that.

I don't expect much on my birthday. Typically I'll just play selfish and see how much I can get away with. tongue

...Also I just realized how funny it is that we're having this conversation in here instead of the Romance thread

...And then I realized that it's not funny at all because the reason is that the Romance thread is a complete shithole

The conversation would turn into an argument about whose birthday is the most depressing due to being single

It's an update conversation for your birthday! I've always wanted one...

Tvtropes' fora have settled into something kind of static. After wiping out all of the problem threads, we shrank down into just a quiet place where we all seem to know each other and aren't likely to leave. tongue

For which I think that we should start a new campaign to get more people to use (and fund) this wiki...

So like. What should I buy for my retail therapy? I just bought a bunch of workout clothes, a new watch, another new watch (one for everyday wearing and one for sports/exercise), fancy Bluetooth headphones, and a shitload of records that haven't showed up yet. I also have plenty of books, there are no video games out right now that I want and don't already have, and I'm feeling pretty lukewarm on movies/TV shows.

So no watches, no workout gear, no records, no books, no video games, no TV/movies.

Which is, like... pretty much all I ever want these days. ._.

I could get a PS4.

But my current home theater configuration doesn't have any unused HDMI ports, so it would introduce the inconvenience of having to switch a cable every time I want to go from playing PS4 to XBO.

I could get a Wii, but that would make it even worse because I already have to switch out RCA cables between my N64, GCN, and PS2 because there are only two RCA port-sets.

I could get a Wii U to solve the Wii problem (because it's backwards compatible and I already have a GCN anyway so I don't need another GCN-capable console), but that brings me back around to the HDMI problem.

So I probably shouldn't get a PS4, Wii, or Wii U.

[sigh]

Obviously you should mail all of the consoles you're not using to me.

Well I'm a Nintendo fan for life. Super Smash Bros, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Mario Maker are fun...I still want to play Kingdom Hearts, but Playstation teases with its side games.

Weigh your desire for fun with your budget and how much time you actually have to play them.

Oh, no. I'm not going to get a new console right now. I want to wait until we move, then I can set up our home theater and get a new receiver with more ports to accommodate new consoles. For now I'm happy with our overabundance of games..

...I have so many games I'm not playing right now, but I don't want to sell. Like, not even if I had the time. I put so much work into them. Even when my Wii lost all its memory, I still put work into them.

If I ever had kids, or even just kids of my sisters, I'd want them to inherit those games.

Well sis already took her SNES back...but some of those games were mine.

Oh Parable...did you know that you're my Best Troper Friend Forever?

My BTFF. ;p My "bitiff". We should just move in together and make dumb conversation forever.

We'll start our own sitcom, Two Troper Tenants. It will be a Troperrific Slice of Life with Sustained Misunderstandings until Executive Meddling forces us to go off air due to nobody watching TV anymore.

DAY 4 OF THE BLACKOUT SEASON

Today lights poofed at 12 pm and returned to 3:50 pm. While I'm glad it won't go out later at night, it still feels anomalous to sleep two hours without keeping your body fresh (it sure sucks to live in a country that is in the equator of the planet). I also had a freaky dream, but I'll talk about it later in the Weird Dreams topic.

I usually make a daily street walk from 4:00 to 6:30 pm, but I didn't feel like doing it today, so I'm now in my computer.

DAY 5 OF THE BLACKOUT SEASON

I woke up at 8 am, and five minutes later the fan and the air conditioner both turned off alone! [lol]

A morning without electricity isn't too bad, especially when it's raining. Because of the rain, though, I couldn't have a nice breakfast in a kiosk like my father suggested, so I had to have an ordinary one at home. When the rain stopped, I went on a walk to buy some stuff, though I still went back home without the lights returning (11:30 am), as they didn't until 11:50, On this afternoon, I had to go to a fairly distant shop on foot.
