I'd prefer to own them rather than have to upkeep a subscription though.

And there's the potential risk of them putting the games behind the higher paid tier as well, which isn't something everyone wants to do.

I managed to get some fan translations running on my 2DS :D Finally get to play some good old games that never had English ports.

(Alas, there isn't a Kega Fusion-specific equiv of T++ for the 2DS, I would have loved to push in dumps of all my old game gear carts since my original game gear died... but at least there is a VC inject utility, so it's still good for that lol).

I just bought a multi cart, mainly for the DQ games. It's all just ds games but still. (I don't feel like learning a new skill and jail breaking my 3ds right now. I'm old, sue me.)

So far it seems to work correctly. Strangely, it's got an Ice Age licensed game on it, but it's in Spanish. Like, that's the only one so far that's like that and I can't change the language it's in.

The sad part is that some fan translations just don't work in Virtual Console.

The better part is that I successfully digitally installed my cart copy of Heart Gold into my 2DS so I can preserve the cart and still play it from the disk image.

So I have gotten three new 3DS games with a fourth coming in the mail tomorrow:

  • New Super Mario Bros 2
  • Yoshi’s New Island
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

The game that’s coming in the mail tomorrow is Majora’s Mask 3D. Oh and I downloaded the other two paths for Fire Emblem Fates (Conquest and Revelations).

I don't think I'm gonna ever get my 3DS fixed.

My cash got burned up again, so I gotta make it all back, and find a place.

And there's a number of other things that have held me up on it, which is really frustrating.

I had more than enough money at the beginning of 2020...but the pandemic happened and screwed that up.

Then an outside factor ate all that money up, and I haven't been able to make it back....and what cash I do have keeps getting eaten up quicker than I can make it.

And I've lost more pieces since then due to trying to quickly check things on it.

And I have until the end of August to figure it out, so I can purchase the last bit of DLC for the few games on it I haven't finished.

And it's basically just one problem after another that results in not enough cash to do anything.

So I'm probably never going to get it fixed at all.

At this point I wonder why we even give nintendo the benefit of the doubt when its obvious they'll continue give sub par digital store fronts then just shut them down.

Locking away any potential of playing their older titles legitimately.

Digital storefronts shut down eventually. This is t really news. Most people have moved on from these systems, and it costs more to keep them running than they make. The end.

The thing to note is that, I believe, the Xbox 360 store is still up, and Sony did backtrack on their decision to close the PS 3 and Vita stores.

The problem is that Nintendo tends to not do what the other two do. Plus we are about to lose a large number of titles, including the entire 3DS library.

Plus the Switch eShop…kinda sucks.

More or less.

Though I admit, the only reason it bothers me so much is due to my current issues that prevent me from finishing any games right now.

Had I completed these years ago it would matter a lot less.

Edit: That is to say, there might be people who are still playing the 3DS for one reason or another, and might want the option to still be able to download stuff from the E-shop.

Like me right now. I’m currently rediscovering the 3DS library as I largely ignored it when it was relevant.

I mentioned it in the General Nintendo thread.

But I'm going to miss having the option to pick up a new GBA game and play it over the weekend.

I did it with both Metroid Zero Mission & Fusion in the past few years and it was a lot of fun.

There are a bunch of others like a few of the Kirby games & the Golden Sun games I'm buying or going to be buying now that the deadline is approaching.

But otherwise I just kept a bit of credit in my account and picked up something when I wanted to play it.

Stuff like this is why people turn to emulation or just wait and hope for the third party developers to port the cult classic games over on steam (Catstlevania advanced collection, Megaman Zero, ZX collection etc)

The upside is that stuff you buy stays on the handheld and doesn't evaporate like Always Online garbage when their servers close.

(and Homebrew lets you decrypt the gamefiles and export them to a replacement handheld, so yeah)

hence why, if possible (and feasible), I try to go for physical versions of releases nowadays. Physical Switch games, for instance, generally don't require an internet connection just to play them, although some of them do require a massive download just to access some of the content (*cough*Final Fantasy X|X-2*cough*)

though I guess that's also just an issue with downloadable content. At some point that stuff *will* be unavailable, that's just inevitable. And to be honest, physical media itself will also deteriorate and not work anymore at some point.

[up][up][up]Basically when there is no official way to play a game these days on modern hardware, people will either have to spend exorbitant prices online or go through unofficial methods.

[up]Yeah, the downside to physical tends to be either the game or console not working anymore.

Yep, I shelled out an arm and a leg to buy a 2DS XL and have it sealed just in case my 3DS ever craps out and I potentially lose access to almost fifteen years of library.

Nintendo's current practice of "classic consoles online only" doesn't give me any confidence they'll port over Wii U/3DS classic titles

[up]To be fair, most of the major Wii U games have been ported to Switch, it’s 3DS that needs it.

I'm really referring to the GBA titles like Zero Mission or Fusion.

Along with the obvious Gens 1-2 Pokémon games.

I'm not gonna hold my breath they'll port the Gens 6-7 games on the switch eshop

Let alone other titles like Luigi's mansions 1-2

I'd sooner expect Nintendo to give port over the Shadow Pokémon games.

Off-topic, but I don't really get why The Pokémon Company refuses to acknowledge that Colosseum and XD exist. Those are the games I'd be shocked to see if when GCN games come to NSO in like... five years or something. Did the guys at Genius Sorority insult Masuda's wife and kid?

On-topic, it's really the Virtual Console stuff that bugs me as well. You'd hope that if these old storefronts do have to disappear, which I do understand from a business standpoint, that all of those older titles would be available on the Switch by the time they close. But we're still waiting on a lot of pre-sixth generation consoles/titles that were on these services to be added to NSO by Nintendo or put into collections by third-parties.

All I know is in a 2016 interview when asked if Pokémon would ever see a return to the Orre region Masuda replied with a simple: No.

Yeah not a snowballs chance in hell and I'll be the first one to admit I liked the shadow pokemon games alot more than all the other 3D titles since Gen 6.

With only Legends Arceus coming close to that level of enjoyment.
