You all know about the capture card mods? I have been seeing some pop up on ebay with a streaming software installed instead of hardware.. I am not sure if those are worth it or not. I would like to stream and record for my Youtube channel tho.

[up]... What.

Funny enough, that was my reaction to the regular ol' 2DS as well.

The little handheld that could. Odd time to be promoting Mario Kart 7, but whatever floats their boat.

I actually like the design of the New 2DS better than the New 3DS. That top half is so much better.

Now, if only I could understand the point of this.

Available in Blue/Black and Orange/White colors. I dunno if it's just me but the orange/white one looks ugly.

New 3DS functionality at a more affordable price level, probably.

I actually kind of like the orange and white one. I'm not sure why, but I feel like it works.

Both colors look nice IMO.

... But if the New 2DS XL is 150 €, why bother? I see New 3DS sold for 180 € around here. And XL though bumps that to 200 €.

I guess the screen is bigger than a non-xl New 3DS?

I don't like the XL models though since they have a harder time fitting into pockets comfortably.

And I actually like the 3D effect.

There's one really good reason to not get the New 2DS XL and instead just get a regular New 3DS: Interchangeable face plates.

Sure, you'd have to almost certainly import from Japan if you wanted to get any of the good ones but at least they're still an option. I wish the Switch had interchangeable back plates.

I also love my faceplates.

Have a Xenoblade, FE; Fates, Majora's Mask, Jibanyan and Pokémon; OR/AS ones.

The only flaw on the New 3DS is swapping SD cards is a pain. BUT that's why I got a big one so I don't need to swap it.

Actually, the entire point of an SD card is to get a big one on any system so you don't need to swap it. Those things are smol and don't come with proper storing cases like game carts.

Not liking the speaker and out-facing camera positions. It looks like I'll cover the speaker with my hands, and that camera is bound to get dirty if it's facing any table you set the system onto.

And that Micro SD slot, while more convenient to access, has me worried I'll accidentally eject it when swapping games.

What an odd announcement. On one hand, that new hardware looks great. It fixes the one big problem I always had with the design of my old 2DS in that while it was surprisingly comfortable to hold, it didn't fold up, and it has the improved New 3DS features (minus the super stable 3D obviously, which I admit does make games more playable in 3D mode for me enough for me to actually keep it on sometimes).

On the other hand, this seems like a really strange time to be announcing this. Maybe I'm wrong and Nintendo really does intend to keep the games coming for the 3DS alongside the Switch for a few more years, but that doesn't change the fact that this announcement almost would have felt like an April Fool's joke to me if it had come about a month earlier. Also, that $150 price tag seems reasonable but not quite at the budget, entry level price point at which they positioned the original 2DS. I wonder if they'll mark the base 2DS price down even further when this comes out.

It's basically one last hurrah in terms of hardware. I don't foresee them making a whole lot more. A few more games for it throughout the year, and by next year they're likely done.

As someone who's never touched a 3DS and also doesn't care about the 3D aspect...this is awfully tempting.

Makes me hem and haw over getting this or a Switch once I have the budget for either or.

EDIT: Also, the orange and white one reminds me of one of those orange cream ice cream bars. Just saying.

Admittedly it's half the price of a Switch and does have a much larger library of great games at the moment, though by July the Switch will have ARMS and Splatoon as well.

In all likelihood this is the Gameboy Micro of the 3DS line. Or even the entire DS line, given that it's basically the culmination of everything it's had since its launch in 2004.

No matter how nice the Switch is, I'm going to miss dual screens.

And my 3D.

Actually now that I think about it, the original Game Boy was available in various iterations from 1989 all the way up through 2001 if you count the Game Boy Color. If you look at it that way, we could be only halfway through the run of the 3DS family of systems. It's still a little strange if they're also trying to position the Switch as a viable portable option, but it wouldn't be entirely without precedent if they weren't planning on phasing it out just yet.

[up] Yeah, that works if you look at the Switch as a larger portable. Which it isn't entirely, but then you're looking at it as a home console, which is traditionally what fully portable consoles are supposed to complement anyway.

Sales time. Sun and Moon at 15.44 million. Should surpass XY by the end of the year. Mario Maker 2.34 million. Planet Robobot 1.36 million. Mario Kart 7 drives over 15 million, though is now behind Sun and Moon. NSMB2 has overtaken 3D Land.
