Isn't the type 1 for this an aversion of the trope?: Too Powerful To Live

Too Powerful to Live is divided up into four types of things that can happen to a villain who is too powerful... but the very first one is when the villain does live. Basically, it's an aversion, at least going off the title.

Should the trope be renamed to simply 'too powerful', cutting out the 'to live' part? Or should type 1 be removed from the trope's definition, listed as an aversion, or spun off into its own trope?

Often it feels like these "X types..." tropes are really multiple tropes grafted together; sometimes the line is blurry and it's not clear whether they should be separate tropes or not, but this seems pretty obvious. "A villain so powerful they dominate the entire rest of the work" is pretty clearly a different trope than "a villain so powerful they get killed off for real early on."

I was going to mention a reason why it should remain part of the same trope, but really just adding "When the villain isn't killed expect New Trope" would do the job. So yeah I'm for splitting it.

Kinda can't believe there isn't a trope for it. I guess it sort of reminds me of Spotlight-Stealing Squad, but it's still pretty clearly different being based off of power and not just favoritism from the author.

Number 1 is not an aversion. Can we close this page?

Second sentence: If they aren't killed now, their presence will dominate the entire story forever.

Type 1 is where they dominate the rest of the story. The trope isn't about the death of the villain, its about the strength of the villain.

It doesn't seem that way to me. Either it needs a split or a rename. If he's Too Powerful to Live then he has to die before he can take over the plot. If he does take over the plot, that's a different trope.

Then we're not talking about the villain, we're talking about the storyline.

In a manner of speaking, yeah. Basically, a new guy shows up and is much too powerful, more or less. He can either get killed off quickly or the series can now be about confronting him instead.

Except in cases of #3 and #4.

The #3 is never fought again. #4 is just added to the rogues gallery, never being as effective as their introduction was.
