Why do Americans hate Lisa Simpson

I mean why, she's the most underrated character on the show and is the voice of reason in the show. I feel for her because I'm a lot like her, I just wonder why, is it because America usually doesn't have favorable view of intelligent people? I'm just inquiring why?

Lisa is disliked because, as the sole voice of reason on the show, she's also used as a mouthpiece for the writers and slows down the plots when she's present. She's been flanderized into a dull character with few interesting character quirks.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Lisa. It's just that it's entirely understandable why a lot of people do.

Actually Lisa is based on Matt Groening. I wonder how he feels about Lisa being so disliked.

The thing about Lisa is that her episodes are all really dull compared to the others.

I don't think there's any special hate for Lisa as a side character. It's just that episodes that focus on her tend to be boring and whiny.

Bart Appeals a lot more not cause he is dumb but because he is fun, saw a rerun last night where Lisa cried after Bart accidentally destroyed a Thanksgiving gift And she basically loses her S***, but for some reason I liked Bart better even thou I Knew Lisa was supposed the be the star Perhaps because Lisa should know that her brother has huge flaws. Don't know if I am right but Speaks Volumes to me.

I think that clinches it. Bart and Homer are more fun. The fact that Marge hasn't been mentioned yet speaks volumes. Homer and Bart get all the fun things to do. Think of what you consider to be the Crowning Moment Of Funny moments. Probably mostly Homer? A good number of Bart moments? Now how many Lisa-spawned Crowning Moment Of Funny moments are there? Though admittedly she gets a good share of Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming moments.

The term "Great Man" is disturbingly interchangeable with "mass murderer" in history books.

Because she's an annoying, preachy, self righteous nag who believes she's right and everyone else is wrong. Plus she's little more than a mouthpiece for Matt Groening's hamfisted political dogma. It's also why Brian from Family Guy earns a lot of scorn.

She's definitely annoying in the newer seasons. Then again, the newer seasons in general are annoying.

On a related note, I read somewhere that Lisa's the most popular character in Japan. That's probably just a joke about how otakus obsess over little girls, but mregh.

No, it's true. It's because she's a studious Buddhist.

She's, if anything, a great example of how smart people are willing to turn their brains off when they get too emotionally invested in a cause.

This doesn't make her in the slightest bit entertaining or likable, however. Usually the few times she's actually right about anything, it's because everyone else is a functional retard.

I tend to blame lazy comedy writers who make every female character the Unfunny by default.

You reminded me of Huey Freeman from The Boondocks, who seemed like an interesting character from what little I read of the comic strip when he had Caesar to bounce ideas off of, but who turned into "Lisa Simpson with kung-fu action! Plus narrator duties, so he can preach directly to the audience!" in the TV show.

No. She's based on Matt Groening's sister, Lisa Groening. Bart is based on Matt.

In case there's someone who didn't know, Matt Growning's close family are Homer Groening, Marge Groening, Lisa Groening and Maggie Groening.

Actually Lisa Groening thinks Lisa is based on her, while Matt has gone on record to say that Lisa is based on his personality as a child. Bart is just the placeholder for his part in his own family, he never had Bart's personality, and Matt has gone on record to say that the reason he created Bart Simpson the way he did was because he thought Dennis the Menace was a weak character and didn't do anything bad at all, compared to Bart who has done worse. I'm guessing it was a competition for Matt to make Bart America's true Dennis the Menace. I can clearly see how Lisa is Matt's mouthpiece, especially in the episode The Cartridge(?) Family where Lisa tells Homer that the second amendment has no relevance in present time and how guns are unsafe. In the commentary of that episode Matt mentioned how much he abhors guns and wants them taken away and almost started an argument over it.

I have no problem with this in either case since I agree 100% with everything the writers have used them to express and do, in fact, proudly consider alternative viewpoints to be flat out bad and wrong :D

I actually kind of like Lisa when she gets taken out of her comfort zone. The episode where she gets horrific deathtrap braces and laughs like the Joker sticks out in my mind.

Then again, Homer still gets all of the funniest moments in the episode ("Dental plan!" ... "Lisa needs braces." ... "Dental plan!" ... "Lisa needs braces." ... ).

The problem is that with both characters you've got a Michael Moore Problem in effect. You agree with what they're saying, but they're being such utter douchebags about it that even admitting that makes you feel unclean.

The problem is that Lisa (and to some degree Marge) are needed: They're the straight (wo)men of the show. It's just not funny with just Homer or Bart.

Exactly. It's a lot like the Well Intentioned Extremist. While you can agree with them in principle it's the way they go about applying it that creates the problem.

People don't like to be preached to or feel like they're worthless because they dont live to the same standard you do. And if they happen to hold an opposite viewpoint they certainly don't like being painted with the same brush as the crazier more extreme members of the group.

For example I don't believe every feminist wants to put on a pair of steel toed boots and kick every man she meets in the `nads or that every Christian really wants to create a Mister Rogers version of society and believes we all rode dinosaurs.
