Okay, I was gonna post two stories, but the second one needs some... additional prep. So here's a quick bit of nerdish conversation to hold you over.

A Question of Rights by Moe Dantes

Konata sighed.

"Another Youtube video hit with a rights claim," she said. She turned to Edmond Dantes and asked "What's the point of copyright anyway? Seems like it just spoils the fun!"

"It's a killjoy," Edmond agreed. "Well, originally the point was to force authors to be original. Back in the day nobody had any imagination so they just ripped each other off all the time. Then copyright came and said 'stop that!'" Edmond rested his head on his arm, "It actually served its purpose. A modern example would be George Lucas."

"The Star Wars guy?" Konata asked.

"Yeah. Originally Star Wars was supposed to be a Flash Gordon movie," Edmond quickly filled Konata in on what Flash Gordon was, then got back to his story, "But anyway, somebody else already had the movie rights. So he replaced all the Flash Gordon characters with his own, and the script went through like a million more revisions, finally got filmed, and we got Star Wars!"

"Uh-huh..." Konata seemed fairly impressed.

"It happened again in the mid-80s. George Lucas wanted the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, couldn't get them and wound up making a movie called Willow, which is honestly one of the better movies he's made."

"Never heard of it."

"Really?" Edmond quickly went to CDJapan and did a search. "Well, its out in Japan, so I only need you to direct me to the nearest video rental."

"Just a minute," Konata held up a hand, "So copyright is supposed to inspire new ideas by stopping people from ripping off other people, right?"

"That's right."

Konata thought for a minute, then said "But wouldn't that have also stopped Lupin III?"

"Nothing stops Lupin III!" Edmond answered emphatically.

They had now put on their coats and were ready to head out.

End Story, but stay tuned!

13 days.

Sorry Edmond, I know you like posting these stories, but I think this thread is kind of tiring itself out.

Well, while we're waiting for the three-way huggin' touchin' squeezin's from the evil kitty cat, I'm gonna finish up "The Real Reason"

(Incidentally, my new moniker was foreshadowed in my previous story if you looked closely)

The Real Reason, Final Part by Moe Dantes

"So, how did it go?" Edmond asked.

"You ever get food lethargy?" Konata asked Edmond. The two were on a sidewalk, looking over a rail at the city below. It was mid-afternoon on a mostly-cloudless day.

"You mean where you feel sleepy right after eating? Yeah," Edmond said. "Once I ate a whole cheese stuffed crust pizza. I didn'r want to, but those stuffed crusts are divine!" Edmond looked like he was about to fly to heaven just thinking about it.

"Oh, I know!" Konata giggled, "Miyuki once told me that food lethargy happens because your body is using up its energy processing food, so I guess I over-ate.

"Anyway, getting back to my story, Kagami went to a movie with me, but only on the condition that me and her have a study session afterward. But we picked up lunch on the way, see. As we were getting settled in, Kagami's older sister had her go to town to pick something up. And as I said, I was getting food lethargy so it was hard to stay awake. And, well..." Konata looked down a little sheepishly.

Edmond guessed, "You crawled into Kagami's bed, didn't you?"

Defensively Konata said "I couldn't help it! I was sleepy and it was the nearest one! But as I lay down I thought to myself how soft and comfortable Kagami's bed was. Tsukasa told me something, but you know, I was so far gone I didn't care."

"And so what happened?" Edmond was curious now.

"It wound up being an impromptu sleepover." Konata admitted with a clear look of satisfaction. "And the best part is I got to sleep with Kagami-sama!"

"Eh?!" that part weirded Edmond out.

"Not like that! But..."

...

Edmond later spoke to Kagami during a walk. Konata had long since gone home.

"When I got home, I saw Konata in my bed," Kagami explained. "My first thought was 'hey, get out of my bed!' but when I aroused her, she made a comment about how I sleep like a goddess. Usually I'd take that as just her being weird, but considering the circumstances..." Kagami hesitated for a minute, then said "I left her alone and studied with Tsukasa, and when it started getting late and Konata still wasn't up, I called her dad and let him know what was up. It became a sleepover at that point.

"Then Tsukasa went to bed. I tried to wake Konata again and this time she awakened. I explained the situation to her and demanded my bed. She tried to get up, but it was obvious she was too tired. Although now that I think of it, she could've been acting... but anyway, after awhile of it I said she could sleep in my bed, but only if she does her own homework in the morning.

"And then Konata said 'if that's the case, then I have one more condition'. Then she moved over until she was almost on the side of the bed."

"Definitely faking it," Edmond said. "Being tired, I mean." Of course, for Edmond this wasn't much of a guess—there's no such thing as being too tired to move unless you're about to die, and anyway Konata had point-blank told him this was the case.

Kagami visibly shivered. "I almost ran out of the room screaming. But I thought about it, and decided to crawl in bed. Let Konata read into it what she will, but all I thought about was making her stick to her word in the morning."

"So how did that turn out?" Edmond asked.

"Believe it or not, it went pretty well. She really did all her own homework, the only thing she asked me to do was check for accuracy."

"And how was it?"

''"About average," Kagami admitted. "That girl has a brain, she's just not used to using it."

"Hmmm," Edmond hmmmed.

There was a moment of hesitation, then Kagami said "Edmond, I've got a favor to ask: Keep all of this to yourself. I think Konata's just going through a phase. Some day she'll find a nice boyfriend and forget about this silly schoolgirl crush, and that'll be that. If that's the case, then its better that nobody knows a thing about it."

Edmond thought, "Yeah, that's one possible ending. Of course," he held up a finger, "Its also always possible that Konata will win you over and a red thread will develop!"

"Ha! If that happens, I'll declare our love to the world myself!" Kagami said.

A clock chimed somewhere. Kagami looked up at it, and said "Oh, I have to go. I'll see you later, Edmond!"

"Bye-bye!" Edmond waved her off. As she passed into the distance, Edmond looked at you, the reader, and said:

So, which ending do you believe in?

I normally say "End Story" here, but this time I won't

Konami ending is the only true ending.

Incidentally... why are you suddenly Moe Dantes?

Now I'll have to call you Moe instead of Edmond.

I just want to say Dantes that I enjoy reading your mini-fics, you get the characters right and the 'Dantes' in you mini-fics doesn't come across to me as a Sue. I would like to see how you handle the characters outside the core four.

I know how these stories tend to end. Let me guess... Konata overhears Kagami and figures that if she tried harder she could make Kagami love her. This leads to stalkerish behaviors culminating in Kagami waking up to realize she's been bedded by Konata without prior consent. Kagami then realizes she needs to get away. She spends the next month preparing to move and saying her last goodbyes to her friends. She doesn't say why she's moving, however. Unfortunately for her, Edmond told Konata that she was leaving, everyone else figuring Konata knew and was in denial. Konata decided to confront Kagami at the airport. Kagami then ended up yelling at Konata for her recent behavior. This causes Konata to snap, and she knocks out Kagami. Kagami wakes up tied down on a bed. She hears the muffled screams of hostages. Soon, she is dead. Konata stands over Kagami's body with the gun. She explains that she rigged the place to explode in 5 minutes. It would trap their bodies together... forever. Konata lays on the bed, wrapped in an embrace with Kagami's body. Then she shoots herself. The bombs go off and the two are together forever. I love dark endings.

That's not so much dark as ridiculously contrived. I mean abducting somebody in a crowded airport? What other hostages? Where the hell did they come from?

Bit of a thread hop here. I can't believe this thread is still going.

Oh, and Ed, I find it bizarre and a little insulting that you wrote yourself explaining the purpose of copyright to me as though I were a child. I pirate like crazy and my cousin is a law-nerd, how could I not know about it?

BTW, I'm really not interested in turning this into a digital piracy debate.

That was the one thing I couldn't figure out. The hostages were because the building wasn't empty. But the airport problem...

Funny how you never mention piracy in the anime...

Then again, that would sort of not be very good for the industry, would it?
