Hints at how the process of undeath inherently corrupts the soul have been mentioned.
The canonical explanation is simply and directly, however, that they are bitter and pissed but otherwise pretty normal. So the use of biological weapons, betrayal of trust and everything is all their own responsibility, no mind control business going on.
Arthas fought Nerzhul in a battle in the center of the mind sort of deal after donning the helmet.
Arthas won.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesArthas took over the Lich King job from Ner'zhul. But okay, I may be getting my lore a bit mixed up. The point is that undeath in Warcraft is a case of having your soul, mind, and body shackled to a magical compulsion that comes from the Lich King. Having that compulsion broken allows you to resume your free will, although you're still a magically animated corpse, and that messes with one's psychology a bit, I'd imagine.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Naga wouldn't make a good race IMO, the lack of legs ruins a lot of collectables. Ogres would probably be the most likely race if they added one.
Heh. Ogres would have difficulty physically fitting in a lot of the game's geometry.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Furbolgs, I could see as playable. Most of the details and animations are there, the models just need to be updated.
Ogres...probably not.
Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)Personally I wouldn't mind being allowed to play some of the variant troll races. Defeat Equals Friendship and all that jazz.
Apocalypse: Dirge Of Swans.I was going to ask why we need two Troll races and then I remembered that we have two Elf races. Still, I think that particular niche is filled.
The lore doesn't really support more races showing up from thin air and joining the Alliance and Horde. Goblins, Worgen, Draenei, and Pandaren already existed in canon, so it's not like those were ass-pulled either. Either you have to trawl existing lore for "maybe kinda sorta" shoehorns, or generate entirely new lore in an expansion.
All that said, I did wonder if Jinyu and Hozen might have been in consideration at one point, but if so they'd have to be dug out of Pandaria and given a larger role in the setting.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I vote we blow up pandaria
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesOgres, as well as Hozen and Jinyu would need female models. Ogre's at one point were considered for Cataclysm but failed on that particular hurdle.
"You can reply to this Message!"You mean the ogre Hallow's End mask thing? That was just a quick and dirty Red Herring Blizzard threw in after the Worgen and Goblin masks were datamined months in advance. Which didn't fool that many people, because it was obvious that it was quick and dirty.

Expergiscēre cras, medior quam hodie. (Awaken tomorrow, better than today.)No. The ogres were actually considered.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI still maintain that Ogres would mandate a lot of architectural design changes for them to fit inside buildings.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I still maintain that no one wants to see female Ogres
"You can reply to this Message!"Why not? It disturbs me that they do not exist and that there is no clear knowledge on how ogres even exist. Then again, Blizzard is a lot about the fan wank.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesWe already have difficulty fitting in the game's geometry since one of the Garrison missions gives you size-increasing potions for some reason.
I smell magic in the air. Or maybe barbecue.Yes, I tried that once. I couldn't get through the doors. I hope that Horde garrisons have more open designs for the sake of the Tauren.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Or Blood Elves, no offense but Orcish style Tall and Spiky does not strike my Mage's aesthetic sense
"You can reply to this Message!"Even the W H40k Dark Eldar are dark skinned though, are they not?
To me, Night elves also kinda do not fit the Alliance aesthetic...and Forsaken barely fit the Horde one
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesI remember playing on an different RP Server years back because mine was down in maintenance and getting into an argument with a Horde RP Guild that basically treated the Night Elves as Horde Race and Forsaken as...not.
Ie they demanded their members not kill Night Elves in Pv P, kick Forsaken out of OG.
...Yes it makes about as much sense to me now as it did then.
Btw, there was an old Lore (from the Pn P Books) bit that described the Alliance essentially as two-factioned. The Eastern Alliance centered on Stormwind and the Western Alliance in Kalimdor with Darnassus as center and Theramore as admininstrative capital.
Also, the Forsaken were not really *part* of the Horde at the beginning, like Trolls and Tauren. It was a political alliance, not a unity like with the others.

"You can reply to this Message!"Yeah, they argued that the Night Elves fit the horde more with the whole nature-thematics.
They obviously didn't really offer counterarguments to the whole "We killed your demigod" thing.
"You can reply to this Message!"The Night Elves do fit the Horde more than the Alliance. But this only assuming the Horde was willing to make reparations for the death of Cenarius.
Then the Warsong happened and the Horde basically defined the Night Elves on the basis of sheer antagonism for the sake of antagonism. The commonalities in respect to ancestors, nature, and even how they look at war are more similar than the Alliance's values compared to the Night Elves.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesNo; they're supernaturally pale. Everything else about them is dark, though. Especially their souls..
I smell magic in the air. Or maybe barbecue.
Uh, Arthas never fought Ner'zhul. Ner'zhul got weakened by Illidan's failed "destroy Northrend" magic ritual, which is what caused Sylvanas & co. to break free.
