The intention in playing a game, in the simplest context, is to generate fun: enjoyment in a non-constructive situation that you are having a hand in creating, in this case a friendly contest of wits and luck.
There is joy in interacting with your opponent and with the game state, because you know you are (trying to) help yourself succeed and (ideally) making some sort of tangible progress toward success.
There is excitement in the drawing of an unknown card, because you don't know to what extent it will help you; generally, it will always have potential to help you to some extent, whether in the short run or the long run.
A game ceases to perform its function when it is not the case that all players involved are having fun, and fails in this the more so the more pronounced and distinct this lack of fun is.
Fun should not be confused with winning. It is in the playing the game, the process, that fun is generated, and the result will never fully eradicate the fun that was had in the interaction and strife that led to it. As popularly acknowledged, a "good game" is one that was decided by luck, not for lack of purposeful input but in spite of an even match of strategy and skill.
One of the most surefire ways of sabotaging the fun of a game is preventing players from having input on the gamestate, especially by means of a flat, all-encompassing ban on a given action. There is nothing less conducive to fun than feeling forced to wait until you lose, and this upgrades immediately to cause for anger if the waiting is optional on another player's part, who could win at any opportunity they wanted but who is choosing instead to draw the process out in order to win in a particular way. One should not be made to wait around for permission to leave in a situation that is intended to be enjoyable to them.

In other news, had a run-in with an Urzatron deck that makes heavy use of that one artifact angel that keeps you from losing, three of that one fucking artifact that keeps people from casting stuff of CMC X, and too. Fucking. Many. Counterspells.
Aforementioned CMC lockouts were set to 1, 2, and 3 respectively. I never got more than two lands into play, but I would have been fine if not for the anti-input artifacts because my hand was full of one- and two-drops that work together in ways constructive to ending a game within twenty fucking turns. Of course, then it would gone the way of the previous fight against the same deck, where the fucker was at negative forty life and I was just waiting around for my artifact removal to show up so he could counter it.
Those are cards that R&D made because they fucking forgot what a game is.
I run Azorius. I run detain. On occasion, I cast one of the maybe three total counterspells in my deck. But my shit does not outright and explicitly prevent players from having a fucking chance at successfully being in the game.
