I already admitted I used a poor choice of words, but now I think I shouldn't have answered. It's no concern of mine that Judai is disliked, and I have no reason to suspect that he'd be liked even after season 3.

I don't think he's meant to be insufferable prior to season 3, and I do think the dub makes him a bit worse (but I don't find even dub Jaden that bad).

With his connection to spirits and the way he encourages people to just have fun with dueling, I think the intention is for him to be seen as a fun-loving, well intentioned guy. A lot of his development is the various threats grinding him down and making him lose that passion and enjoyment of dueling.

GX, from what I know, is kinda like Digimon Adventure 02 in that a lot of stuff wasn't planned out or had behind-the-scenes issues, IE Jesse's introduction, Jaden's friends becoming less relevant, every season having a different threat, cool oneshot characters and not-explained lore, and season 4 being cut in half.

Huh, that actually explains a lot. Albeit, I enjoyed GX, but some characters left something to be desired. Season 1 felt a bit better, though. Not surprised Jaden eventually went into despair since his life philosophy clashed with his overall destiny, which really puts a number on the poor guy's mind. It does feel like an abrupt 180, but that's more that the tone of the 3rd season just went severely dark compared to the previous seasons, which weren't entirely lacking in darkness, obviously, but still had more than enough light moments.

I've forgotten what Jaden's like, especially early on, but I think LK is exaggerating some stuff for comedic effect as well. The silly one-liners feel less like a Jaden problem, and more of a 'let's just not take anything seriously at all' decision in writing. I'm guessing the sub is different?

Either way, I still like Jaden. At his worst... well, he still uses the best non-Noble Knight deck, so yay.

"Who cares if he's richer than me! And so what if he's more important! I'm really good at playing card games! That's what life is really all about!" Actual (possibly tiny bit paraphrased) dub dialogue.

I'm indifferent to Jaden on the whole.

What episode is that from?

According to the Duel Art book, since the original YGO was a bit dark Takahashi decided GX would be brighter, as Jaden doesn’t have a dark side, is cheerful, hot-blooded, and easy to read. Takahashi also felt that GX’s cheeriness meant the protagonists couldn’t grow as much and would be unable to defeat someone like Marik, so he wrote in Jaden becoming the Supreme King, but then felt it was almost too dark. But he feels Jaden became a stronger character after that, and that Jaden is the most appealing protagonist in Bonds Beyond Time.

Also, Duel Runners were mainly made so characters could travel the world and assemble pretty much anywhere. Originally only Yusei and Jack Atlas were going to have them, but it turned out everyone did. 5Ds’ Dark Signer arc was partially inspired by a miniseries Takahashi had presented to Shonen Jump that got rejected, where 5 heroes with glyph birthmarks were killed by an ancient enemy, got reincarnated, and only had the glyphs to remind them of their past lives, which they’d gradually remember and join forces to take down the original enemy. (The main reason it was rejected was because the sample oneshot ended right as they died.) Aside from the geoglyphs and dragon marks, the Dark Signer arc was made by the staff, though Takhashi really enjoyed how exciting the finale was.

“Anything can become a dragon” is a central tenet of Yu-Gi-Oh, hence Stardust Dragon, Black Rose Dragon, Barrel Dragon, etc. Takahashi prefers drawing Western dragons but feels as long as it has recognizable dragon elements anything can be one.

GX Episode 7

I think Duel Monsters punishments would involve being forced to fight annoying strategies (e.g. burn decks) while using a deck that's purposefully terrible.

Does anybody know the deal with the Pot of Greed joke? Is it a reference to something?

I think it just a reference to how the script always proclaims what Pot of Greed does, no matter how many times it is used and how every duelist and their mother should already know what Pot of Greed does. (Its the card with the 2nd shortest text ever)

So we've now gone two weeks without GX recaps.

Did something happen to this series? I really liked it.

Little Kuriboh's been bogged down a bit by life, so it might be a couple more days.

Based on his twitter he seems to have been working on the next YGO Abridged episode (And renovations and US Citizenship stuff). Dunno. I suppose he watches these when he feels like it :-P

He's been a robot Dinosaur. Does that count? (in the world of Yugioh, yes absolutely)

GX Episode 9 with special guest star The Rower.

I can't wait to see his reaction to Para and Dox showing up next week.

Between Chumley's dad and the hot sauce thing, this is the best episode ever.

In Episode 13 Jaden duels a monkey. In episode 18 Jaden duels a Yugi cosplayer. In episode 34 Jaden duels Kaibaman. These are episodes that will be glorious.

When does he duel Abidos III?

Episode 40.

While those sound great. I have trouble picturing these (except the monkey one) living up to Chumley's super manly dad and Sake being Bowdlerized as Hot Sauce.
