@Dr Dough

But those are for monetary reasons. They don't want females because they won't buy their stuff or because of ratings issues just like they don't want us really (we don't buy toys). The idea that Executives hate females just because they are sexist is nonsense.

"have sexist beliefs about demographics" =/= "hates women"

I mean, "hates females because they're sexist" isn't even the right way to phrase that.

"Is sexist because they hate females" is slightly closer.

Not every person that has said or thought or acted in a sexist way is motivated by hate. Hatred is much too strong a word. People are more complicated than that.

Their "sexist" views are because of money (yes unfortunately). I am just saying that it isn't a conspiracy against women.

[up]x3 No it's not. Do you honestly believe that?? Network executives simply don't care about action shows/movies with female protagonists because they believe they'll do poorly, despite evidence to the contrary.

[up][up] Nobody has ever claimed anything was a "conspiracy" against women, but that doesn't change these institutional biases and "things that everybody knows" that are often counterfactual and discriminatory.

"Everybody knows" that genre programs with female protagonists don't do well, so the network doesn't market them as well or give them as good timeslots, so they don't do well.

That maybe true when pitching a show, not when the show is already airing. You can't deny Korra's current ratings.

Nobody has ever claimed anything was a "conspiracy" against women,....

Maybe not here, but sadly some people do.

[up] Because it's in the Friday Night Death Slot! Like unnoun said, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy!

DrDougsh Since: Jan, 2001

The way I see it, the idea that boys absolutely won't watch stuff with girls as the leads or play with a toy based on a female character, is largely true only because people like these executives make sure it stays that way. It's essentially a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy: Executives in the entertainment business refuse to give women much of a presence in gender-neutral media for fear that the male audience turn away. However, by not making any interesting female characters in major roles in "boys' shows", they effectively ensure that the boys stay disinterested in shows or toys with female characters and support the idea that Any show with a girl hero = Show exclusively for girls.

So, the reasoning that they're doing this for monetary rather than sexist reasons does not make me more sympathetic towards them - they are not responding to a problem by avoiding female presence or demographics in their shows, they are sustaining it.

But to be fair I don't hate Korra, and I enjoy it as a fan completely and I wish for it the best.

I'm not so sure of that.

I am, but I won't get to that as that becomes a personal attack something agains the rules and my ethics.

@unnoun (50606):

That Froborr person is delusional. A quick glance at the ratings makes it really obvious that the problem is that people (and especially kids) didn't know when the show was airing. By Book 2, the adult ratings were flat — schedule changes didn't affect them anymore because the only people watching were the ones who followed the news on the net.

If quality was the problem, the show would have been bleeding adult viewers, but that's not what happened. The adult ratings were very consistent throughout Book 1, and the Book 2 drop was consistent with the "didn't know it was on" drop they had for 108.

The kid ratings, in contrast, jumped all around when the times changed. Claiming that the show lost viewers for any reason other than network action is completely unsubstantiated.

Maybe Nick wasn't the right network for Korra, which is awkward to say since Nick produced it.

The show's target demographic is a bit older than Nick's. There was bound to be some contention between network and series.

...And is also someone I know and am friends with. So I'd like you to please not say that about him.

Or anyone, quite frankly.

I seriously doubt the network doesn't want their investment back. That's not "delusional" it's an interpretation of the issue as valid as yours.

Truth is "a quick glance" isn't good enough to make a complex market analysis.

[up]x8 I agree and disagree. I firmly believe that there is always a way tat an issue like this could have been solved. SBT could have been saved if they damn well marketed the thing properly, didn't suddenly sift from Friday, to Wednesday, to Saturday Mornings. Korra could have worked better if they knew what it was, understood the needs that requires and adapts.

And Nick should have known what it was getting into when they ordered the show in the first place; This show was probably not going to cater as much to the lower demographics compared to the higher ones from the get go.

The strongest are not the ones with the most knowledge or the most power, but the ones that can adapt.
