A barbecue is a sort of grill, so I think so, yes.

[up]Heh, that link includes the 'Brazilian Rodizio Machine Gas Grill' which is not, in fact, a grill. Unless I am grossly misunderstanding what a 'grill' is. That is not very helpful.tongue

The main important aspects of a "grill" are:

1. Heat source from below (for practical purposes nearly always an open flame of some kind)

2. Meat rests on a cooking surface above the heating element

Cooking meat on a spit would generally be considered roasting, not grilling. The line between "grilling" food and "smoking" it is a bit blurry. Smoking usually refers to cooking something at a very low heat over flames for an extended period of time. TL;DR "grill" has a lot of different meanings depending on context. When used as a verb it generally means cooking the food fairly quickly. Both types of cooking can be done on a barbecue grill, it's the methodology that's different.

Grilling say, a rack of ribs, would mean turning the heat on the barbecue up pretty high so that it sizzles and whatnot, whereas smoking would require you to keep the heat low, kind of like baking them, only with much more flavor added due to the flame. Smoking generally also means putting certain types of wood in the fire to create more smoke than usual (oftentimes you soak the wood first so it smokes more and burns slower) and flavor the meat.

[up]So I understand the word right. The thing is, the "Brazilian rodizio grill' fail the second requisite. In that grill, the meat is impaled and then put to rest over the heat source. That make sense as this is how churrascarias rodízio work, but it is definitively not a 'grill'.

I guess this is a result of the opposite mentality I had. 'Brazilian rodizio grill' is the Americans conflating churrasco with BBQ and, thus, calling the device you use to cook it a 'grill' (they are also conflating the word 'rodízio' with 'churrasco', which is kinda funny).

Anyway, I learned a thing today, that is good.

PS:Added some wikipedia links so you guys can understand what the hell I am talking about.

Yeah, I'm not sure what that's going on with that; it's definitely a rotisserie, not a grill, and I don't know of any Americans who would see that and call it a grill. I guess it's just a Non-Indicative Name. I guess if you got really vague about it, you could define grilling as "cooking over an open flame", but for practical purposes most people don't use it that way.

I jut realized that the conversation can easily go back to Homestuck because Texas and Dave. Dave is from Texas. We can make a reasonable guess that he was raised there for most of his life. But it seems to be an unconsciously agreed headcanon that he is entirely devoid of an accent indicative of being Texan and sounds about as "average media-centered suburban teen with a dash urban" as he seems.

So... Do you guys think that maybe we've had it all wrong?

And that Dave actually sounds... Well, Texan?

Well, we could talk about how setting a river on fire is apparently so mundane that nobody else commented on it?

[up][up][up][up]The thing is we eat our churrasco the same way you guys eat BBQ. From what I see on TV, to culture surrounding it is very similar (a bunch of man making it on their backyards). It is rather weird to go to a churrascaria and say you are going to eat a roster, even if it is technically correct. Since 'currasco' is pretty much 'Brazilian BBQ', I imagine people started to call the instrument to make this "Brazilian BBQ" a 'grill', even if technically incorrect.

That is what I am figuring at last.

[up][up]I hope so. Different accents are cool. Specially when they don't match the stereotype. That said, it depends mostly on Bro's accent, really. It appear the kids barely left their houses and had no friends, so their household accent would be the most prevalent.

[up]What?

There's always the possibility that Dave's writing doesn't demonstrate his accent, but his speech does. But really it depends on a couple of things; who he hangs around with, whether Bro has an accent, etc. Simply living in Texas doesn't give one an accent, it's being surrounded with people who also speak with it.

@Heatth: Earlier I mentioned that the jokingly-exaggerated outside perception of my home state of Ohio seems to be "it's terrible and boring and full of corn" instead of "it's terrible and boring and they managed to set a river on fire! Several times! A river!" as I would have expected. And noone seemed to be surprised at the notion of the Cuyahoga river fires.

[up][up]All of this is true.

I found a Dave 'yall', btw. And another one. Davesprite too. (couldn't find earlier because spelling)

Incidentally, while I was searching for those I noticed Roxy uses 'yall' a few times herself. And so did Meenah. Maybe for Dirk and Roxy is less a Texan thing and more a fish hittler thing.tongue

[up]I don't even remember that post, I am sorry.

PS:It just occurred to me that Dave might exaggerate his own Texan accent and use 'irony' as an excuse. That way he got to be ironic and not having an actual Texan accent at the same time. For some reason I don't think Dave would like being too associated with Texas.

Yeah, I'm slowly coming to grips with the fact that the idea of a river catching fire isn't the most amusing thing imaginable to everyone.

Dangit, that just means it's either typical southern/texan stuff or, more likely, it's typically "gangsta" talk. Especially considering how Meenah and Condesce talk with the overly urban ebonic slang speak worthy of only the most lazy of human beings...

So that's what Brazilian churrasco means? For us it's a type of meat, don't know the English name, kind of thin-sliced and sort of junk-food?

That sounds an overly harsh description of it, to be honest. But I wouldn't really know; the only people who talk like that where I live are indeed kids emulating their ideal of "gangsta".

[up][up][up]I did give a wikipedia link.tongue Apparently it is roughly the same as what you guys call 'Asado'. It is a way to prepare meat placing them over a incandescent charcoal, either on a grill or in a metal spike.

[up][up]Yeah. But it sounds cooltongue I mean, I know where you are coming from. I only find it cool because I don't have any kind of personal experience with people who actually talk like that. I only see them on TV and such.

[up], [up][up]They make perfectly dignified and reasonable people that only want to do the right thing look bad in the perception of the general public because of our identical ethnic traits.

This isn't personal because I have to live with these horrible people in my current situation at Job Corps who make an affront to the English language! I AM CALM!

Not everyone has your sophisticated vocabulary, Mousa. And thanks for that Heatth, I'd had trouble translating asado.

It's not the sophistication of my vocabulary, it's that they willfully refuse to speak like a perfectly non-criminal human beings for the betterment of themselves and our ethnic group as a whole. I refuse to be brought down just because I have to be identified as "one of them"

I don't need them to be like me, I need them to try to be better and they can't even do that much given the environment and the opportunity, I am surrounded by self-sabotaging crooks that make the well meaning look bad, and the language is something that can be easily resolved!

-shrug-. Some people find identity in speaking like that. Part of their culture, even. Others are just used to it.
