They want to do an African region...
I'm not too sure about that. Not to be a negative nancy, but Japan and their portrayal of black people isn't always that great.
I mean, they managed to give Leona a Mammy look in the beginning.
But maybe I'm wrong and they'll do better than I expect. Hell, there's no real guarantee that's what they are doing, and I might be getting uptight over nothing.
One Strip! One Strip! The image is clearly focusing on Africa, but the globe itself is jutting out of the wall with India front and center.
So that means the next Pokemon game might be set between Middle East, Africa and South Asia?
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.A Mediterranean setting around north Africa, the Middle East, and south Europe could be neat, but I don't think the position of the globe is necessarily indicative of anything. I think it's just there to symbolize how global Pokemon is.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! That would be a very big region though.
The biggest area they've based a region on so far is France.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseThe localizations have been steadily picking up the slack for Japan's lack of cultural insight at least. Sun and Moon feel a bit more authentically Hawaiian than X and Y felt French, and a lot more than BW felt even generally American..
I don't think they'd go that route any way since they're not going to pick such a potentially controversial part of the world to set their super safe, conservative, ultra kid friendly and highly visible RPG series in, but there's potential for it being handled well.
Sometimes, one can explore beyond in what most people usually visit. It could bring a good insight of different types of cultures outside the mainstream ones and there's no way they'll chicken out for it.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Pokemon is as mainstream as it gets. None of the settings so far have been particularly adventurous by any metric: New York, France, and Hawaii are all very common backdrops for all sorts of media, and the 4 Japanese regions aren't particularly uncommon ones either.
Pokemon has the potential to do a lot of things but it also doesn't have much incentive to do anything particularly out there given how uniformly successful their safe approach has been this past couple of decades.
Yeah, but still, doesn't mean they should stay in the comfort zone for too long and you know that.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Mess with the golden goose too much and she might stop laying eggs.
They have no incentive whatsoever to do anything that might risk it either: most fans like the games, reviewers are terrified of sharing any real opinions on them lest they be shredded by the angry mob (see the perfectly valid and explained too much water criticism turned meme, which is ultimately a bunch of angry people screaming at a guy for doing his job and criticizing a popular game), so they all review well, and they make a ton of money. It's pretty much perfect as is as far as anyone in a position to change things is concerned.

What you think they should do is a completely separate thing from what they will do.
France and Hawaii are both very popular tourist spots for the Japanese, and New York is a popular spot too while also being practically the face of the US. Assuming they don't go back to Japan, it's likely the next region will also be based on a country that's a popular vacation spot. That mainly means Western Europe, North America, and perhaps other parts of East Asia.
I doubt they will go to China or Korea. It could get uncomfortable for most.
Wake me up at your own risk.Wow holy shit, Unova is fuckin tiny.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseWell, the pic shows the size of thier real life counterparts, and not the actual regions.
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*Do you think a region based on the West Coast of the USA would be noticeably different from Unova?
Wake me up at your own risk. The most I can see is adding a lot of references to California, but other than that... not too different enough from Unova.
Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*Well, yeah. At the very least, there'd be more desert areas.
It's been 3000 years…It would probably be about as different from Unova as Hoenn is from Sinnoh.
what do you mean I didn't win, I ate more wet t-shirts than anyone elseWest coast and east coast are pretty wildly different, but Unova's already a sort of US amalgam rather than very specifically New York.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Yeah, Unova has a film Studio
Where there's life, there's hope.make the next pokemon game take place in poke'england
just make everything a british spelling

Goddammit, Schezo... || *insert incredibly thirsty copypasta about Dr. Ratio*It's pretty obviously a Hollywood analogy, though.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
This is what Gamefreak posted on their Facebook page for their 29th birthday: a picture of the Earth with a focus on eastern Africa and the western Middle East with a couple of Pikachu on top of a bouquet of flowers with sunflowers being prominent.
