That's actually part of the problem. Even if we assume Yardrat was too far for Goku to teleport, he still didn't teleport even when his pod was close enough for him to become able to. Goku says he would have teleported to Earth to fight Frieza but Trunks dealt with it first, but the question this raises is why he didn't teleport to Earth anyway so he could be with his family.
For a husband and father whose family hasn't seen him in a year, there is every reason to rush. Goku shouldn't need a life-or-death emergency to justify spending time with his son.
The Cell Saga is the arc where Goku's failings as a husband and father stop being circumstantial and become a deliberate consequence of choices he makes, even becoming a plot point by the time of the Cell Games, so I think it's entirely fair that TeamFourStar is using this arc as an opportunity to bump it up from running joke to serious point of drama.
Apparently you can get to Kaio-sama's planet by flying there, according to Whis and Beerus's mode of transit in Super, so it is located a physical distance away from Earth.

Right. I can't answer that except to say that Toriyama clearly didn't think of it at the time.
I don't really think Goku is to blame if the author has him do something like that.

Uh, but Goku have always been Toriyama's character. Everything he always did is something Toriyama made him do. If we look from that angle, there is no point to ever analyze any character.
I have no idea what you are talking about. Also, that would mean you can get to Yama by flying there. That seems weird.

That point is moot since Whis was the one doing the flying. You cannot base what is possible on what Whis does.
That would mean the Filler with Kid Buu attacking otherworld is actually plausible. I'd be okay with that.

He just did that, apparently. He saw Goku using it and figured it out. He copied a few other moves as well, like the kamehameha, but you would expect the teleport would be harder to learn by watching.
Yeah, I would think it would be like learning how to shoot a gun by watching someone use it versus learning how to do calculus by watching someone use it.

I'm willing to cut Buu some slack on that because of the point made above: teleporting should be harder to learn by watching than the Kamehameha, but sensing ki should be the hardest thing to learn by watching, and Vegeta picked it up effortlessly after finding out the Earthlings could do it.

Learning to sense energy was likely less a matter of learning it from observing the Z-fighters and more a matter of realizing it was possible.
