Is there a TV Tropes policy on making/adding to a page of your own work?

What do you think about creating a page for a persons own work? Or what if they feel that a specific trope should belong there?

Yeah, we got a policy about it. It's real simple: Do it if you want to, but keep in mind that once the page is made, it's not "yours" anymore. Other editors will rewrite and add and change and cut things. If you can't cope with that, don't make the page.

I'm glad for the clarification as well. I have several stories I'm working on or editing, and I didn't know if it would be considered crass to make pages for them.

Pretentious Mode: One point I would want an author to remember while editting their own works' pages is that while editting here they are just that - another editor. Their edits carry no more weight. Their opinions are as valid as ours.

Which is why we strive to stay away from stating opinions in articles about works, among other reasons.

Works pages are generally a free launch so I think it applies.

Hm, maybe I should have searched for a thread like this instead of starting my own. I agree with a previous posters suggestion that this topic be stickied.

Well, wouldn't the author have more weight on non subjective things? Or at the very least whether or not a theory gets jossed?

Nope. The author can say "I intended..." He cannot say "I succeeded at..."

[up]So they aren't allowed to joss/confirm WMG either?

Mind you, situations where an author may want to do that before that part of the story are rare...

If one is resorting to Tv Tropes to hold jossings and what not, then I greatly fear for the quality of that comic.

Also, the trope pages are supposed to give an illusion of having been created by one person or something to that extent.

If suddenly you read "Actually I meant..." it won't make an ounce of sense.

And foreknowledge without citation (even in this wiki) will just make things messy. It's probably best to make the information AVAILABLE for people, but not necessarily from the trope page as an origin of said information.

I see no reason a creator shouldn't be able to add information that josses a WMG here. They don't have any more privilege on the page for their works than any other editor, but they don't have less either.

With that said, "That's not what I meant" may be Word of God, but it's not always effective as jossing, either.

What we really don't want is to have articles written in the first person from the perspective of the author. That looks very jarring compared to the rest of the wiki. Also, it's kind of silly to Joss a theory that no fan has actually proposed yet.

Hi there smile

I'm not exactly sure, whether this fits in this thread, but it think it's better than starting a new one. I've been lurking on Tv Tropes for some time now, am a writer myself and can quote most Tropes by heart.

The problem? I am a dedicated Roleplayer and part of some kind of Five Man Band, all of them Roleplayers, who have created countless characters and storylines by now - and I had a lot of fun describing them via Tropes. So did our Lancer. And now we have the idea stuck in our heads to create a Tropes-page and a charactersheet for them.

There Is No Such Thing As Notability, right?

But maybe around 20 people have ever heard of the characters. It's nothing that can or will ever be published. One could say, only five people will ever benefit from this page - the authors.

What do you say? Waste of Server space? Okay, but kinda awkward? Sure, why not?

When you describe the campaign(s) here and show how tropes are used by characters, you are doing the same thing as the campaign(s) called "Lord of the Rings" written up by that English dude.smile

In other words: Go for it.
