Heh, things got old school bloody from a werepanther attack. He survived, a few of my people didn't, and several more are on the brink, with me unlikely to save them just in case they turn.

Okay, so first bugfix is in, and I'm gonna restart the game and do a better job of turtling up for future were attacks.

He fixed a major worldgen bug that would lead to crashes, he also stopped dogs from petitioning for citizenship when they return from missions, and he stopped raids from being uncontested.

Ah, good. Spent about forty minutes yesterday trying to create a world and failing.

From what I gather, that bug had to do with people going full screen on the game. If you stayed at minimal window to make the world, you'd get a world instead of a crash. Thankfully, I think it's been fixed.

From what people were saying on Reddit, Toady reported that the crash would happen when agents tried to check back with a government that had since been conquered, or something like that. It doesn't sound like that would have anything to do with whether the game is minimized.

Might have been more than one. There were also reports of a crash that WAS affected by screen size.

There's also some people who put the worldgen in the background and do other stuff on the side.

Yeap, I did both with the initial release and couldn't get a world made.

Can't remember, how inter-connected are dwarf civilizations nowadays? If I make a fort that's a colossal farm will that food be picked up by the NPC caravan and eventually shipped to another fort of mine?

What you produce doesn't count toward the Kingdom stocks yet. It's the same reason you can never domesticate new species in the current version. I'm looking forward to the economy arc.

Settlements don't depend on each other for food. By default, dwarven settlements founded during worldgen only appear in places where there are caverns with water in them, so that food is available on-location. As far as I know, new forts founded by the player are assumed to be able to feed themselves.

The only thing that is really affected by trading is what materials each civilization has. For instance, as far as I know, humans or dwarves in any settlement may show up with iron weapons and armor if their own civilization has any settlement in a location where the appropriate iron ores are available.

Presumably Toady means to update this stuff with a more complex economy somewhere down the line.

He does. As far as I gather it, one day you should be able to start as an adventurer, gather a clan of your own, and settle down to make a settlement/civ of your own as an individual. Complete with what you do affecting the resources and people of whatever civs you're dealing with. It'll just be years down the road before we get that far. Hell, before we can really get that much intermix between Fortress and Adventure mode, Toady has to sync the timescales of the two modes.

I'm seriously thinking about that parasitoid nation we talked about again. I might sketch something out by year's end. Probably start with getting the actual species working as a creature and move up from there.

Just now I was checking the combat logs in my fort to see what the local FBs were up to. The most recent report was 'the crundle is fighting', I selected it and found this.

Looking at that area on the map, there was a cavern tree just above the combat location, with a lot of FB webs and some troglodyte corpses in it. It seems what must have happened was that an FB shot webs at the troglodytes in the tree, an unfortunate cave swallow was hit by the webs and killed, and its corpse dropped down below and hit the crundle, injuring it in the leg.

This kind of thing is what makes Dwarf Fortress great.

I know. I love that you can look at a situation, and totally forensics your way to figuring out what happened. And it all makes sense. [lol]

I just experienced some serious Fun.

Same fort as the one I mentioned above. This was probably my most successful fort to date, I made over 8M worth of goods, had mountains of supplies, solid farming going on, engraved bedrooms for everybody. There's a megaproject that I was making this fort for, so while things were gradually progressing towards that, I got in the habit of leaving the fort and alt+tabbing to other windows while my dwarves did stuff. It seemed to be stable enough, no danger of running out of food or drink, and I just had to check every few minutes for mandates. I also never bothered creating a military since I had two double drawbridges sealing off my main entrance and an artifact floor hatch sealing off the caverns.

Just now I alt+tabbed back into DF and found an announcement that a new dwarf had taken the position of monarch. The previous monarch had already been living in my fort, so something must have happened to her. However, before I could check more closely, I noticed that the area around my central mineshaft was covered in blood. I checked the combat logs and it looked like my whole population was involved in something; checked the unit list and I'd lost almost half my dwarves. A bit more investigation of the combat logs and it seemed the dwarves were fighting each other. Here's what I think happened: I had a trained hydra tied up a few floors down from where my trade depot was. Probably one of the dwarven merchants walked down into where the hydra was, got attacked, and immediately turned hostile, causing a loyalty cascade between my fort and the merchants.

I let the game keep running. Since I had no military, the merchant guards were way overpowered and slaughtered my population and my livestock. However, I managed to lock a floor hatch with a dwarf down in the mines in order to keep him alive. About a month later the merchant guards finally left the map, but at that point my population had dropped from about 143 down to 5 dwarves: The guy locked in the mines, three dwarves in cages, and one other extraordinarily lucky dwarf who had managed to avoid the merchant guards the entire time. Interestingly, the hydra that I believe initiated the whole mess was also still alive, with a few injuries.

For the purposes of my megaproject it might be easier to just kill DF and reload my latest save. But I hate going back in this game, and since my fort hasn't actually fallen, I'm going to try to rebuild. Hopefully I'll get some migrants soon to replenish my population. In the meantime, the food and booze I have stocked up could probably last my remaining dwarves decades, so I've got plenty of time. Hopefully my remaining dwarves won't be driven insane by ghosts before I can get everybody properly memorialized.

Holy fuck that's awesome!

I was reading with an eye on something. There's also a bug where nobles kill each other over artifacts these days, and I wondered if you'd have evidence of your theory. The injured hydra and the guards getting involved probably was all the evidence you needed. Badass load of Fun, man.

I'm playing V0.40.23, so any bugs unique to the recent version don't apply.

The hydra eventually died of its wounds, causing the world to pass into a new age at the start of the next year. I managed to get the three caged dwarves out, but two of the five survivors eventually went insane and died. I was down to three dwarves for a time, now after a couple of migrant waves I'm back up to 13. One of my dwarves, the guy I locked in the mines earlier, is somehow hanging onto sanity at over 600K stress; his thoughts page says he is 'utterly harrowed by the nightmare that is his tragic life'. Fortunately at this point I've managed to dump about 90% of the remaining dwarf corpses and memorialize almost all the dead (with all the leftover supplies in the fort, my dwarves didn't have much to do besides carve slabs), so hopefully his stress won't get too much higher.

It seems the poor guy finally went berzerk and was killed by a miner. :(

Regardless, the megaproject will go ahead without him.

Wow that is an epic collapse of a fort. So what is due in the next update?

The fortress update or the game update? No idea for either. The game is in its usual debug phase with the strongest ones getting hit first.

So Toady is currently working on the raiding mechanic. He's got pillaging and razing going on, with a loot system in place. He's just ironing it out now, trying to make it so the loot isn't as disappointing as a pair of silk shoes and a random assortment of animals.

Personally I think we need a "shopping list" when we go raiding, like the trade agreement screen we get now. That'd be helpful. At the very least we should be able to set our own weights, don't you think?

Okay, so Toady finished the razing mechanic. You could, theoretically, drive an enemy civ off its land. His next task is a tributary system, and then he's going to release this next version. A later task, no specified time or release cycle mentioned, will be placing administrators of your own in foreign sites. I expect this should come around the time he lets us have hill dwarves and deep dwarves attached to our sites. I don't know for sure if they'll come together, but the two do seem like they would be interlinked on the work side.

The reason I'm still keeping y'all updated is because, once they get the bugs scouted and game breakers culled, I kind of want to try our hand at another succession fortress where we actively try to arm and train ourselves, then go out and break the world we gen up just to see what we can do with it. It's been a long time since we've had stories of our own in this game, and I want us to make another.

Aye, yes I do know that. Never counted you out for a second. Now to drum up other interest so it's not just us two passing a save back and forth. Though I'm willing to do that if it comes to it.
