Well, I went to try and play my fortress once again... Dwarf Fortress keeps crashing. I think Toady goofed on the save system.
"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by EdveedEh, best thing is to probably wait for first patch, Toady is now working on crashes
I like mimes myself. New updates on the spoilers: You can command or banish the demon who's name you've found on the slab. Epic.
That's what we were talking about. That spoiler's not new.
Aww, I missed that.
This is what happens when I stay up.
On another unrelated note to the spoilery stuff, I also noticed one thing with the dwarves and strange moods: It's a bit buggy.
Explanation: Let's say Urist McMoody wants a clothier's shop, and there's no clothier's shop. He'll mull about in the fort as normal. Once ya build it, he insta-claims it without going to the workshop. The dwarf will go nabbing materials on his own, but if ever he has to state his demands on something he needs, he'll sit in his workshop and want something like cloth and metal bars. For this example, he'll have the cloth already to workshop normally, but need metal bars. As soon as the bars are smelted, the dwarf will apparently have the materials to his workshop in no time flat. (Not sure if this'll apply to just one of an item or multiples, but I like the idea of dwarven telekinesis for strange moods.)
"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by EdveedAt any rate, it's not just gods of war and death. I had a world where the goddess of youth, children, dance and festival made a slab "..after pondering the ineffable subtleties of youth."
Huh. Maybe its just more common with spheres related to valor, war, death, misery, torture, etc than the "good" ones? That or one of those is somehow willing to do it?
It has to be the party sphere
Also had a goddess of courage: "..to provide opportunities for bravery to rise."
That one also had a awesome demon named Orangewitch (Who ruled the civilization of The Wicked Witch).
I think negative spheres are more common, but I'm doing science for this purpose.
Well, in some cases its case of "Hohoho, let's free the demons so mortals can have war and moments of honor and valor!" kind of weirdness, but I guess in case of weird spheres its random?
I've heard of monsters being risen to the surface to test people in war and siege. It was awesome!
I love the new depths of the game.
Posted my findings (Meager though they be) as far as SPOILERS goes: Here.
Huzzah.
UNDEAD GOBLIN SIEGE? BEFORE THE FIRST CARAVAN ARRIVES? REALLY, DF? Fortunately we didn't get their attention yet... and we didn't even embark in a hostile area, either...

Don't Press Your Luck too many times in life. You'll just get whammied. So a hotfix has been posted, the game should no longer get saves corrupted when it autosaves, and most of the really blatant crashes (actively blocking rather than doing so reflexively, greeting a deity or shouting with nobody within earshot) have been fixed, along with the growth bug that DF modders figured out how to fix for Toady.
Next up on Toady's plate seems to be how slow ongoing world-gen progresses, leading to extremely long waits and FPS drops on nearly any world larger than small. Also of concern to him seems to be the "mystery babies" bug where large numbers of babies from pretty much every civilized race will end up appearing in the units list sporadically, and the duplication of retired adventurers and other historical figures.

This is a signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.I'll download the hotfix and gen a new world. A small one. It might boost my FPS, too.
The hotfix to uncorruptify the saves is up? Nice!
Growth Bug? Umm... explanation if possible?
"If you have any beefs with Santa, do remember to SETTLE IT IN SMASH!" Quote by EdveedThere was a bug where anyone born on a time not ending with a zero would remain baby sized forever. It's been fixed. So now 9/10s of your fortress won't be Mini-mes.
Gods still don't talk back, which is to be expected (Would be interesting if they did, though. Wonder if mods can solve that?)
So since new version is much more stable, I've been playing my fortress game for 8 hours since install... And never saved.
Guess what happened xD Yeah, it finally crashed. Yeah, this version doesn't crash as annoyingly often, but it can still happen so stupid me for not saving :(
There's a reason I turn on seasonal autosaves

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Indeed. That was folly in the last one, with autosaves corrupting, but it's not a problem in this version, since that's what Toady was trying to fix.
I just finally had my hard drive swapped, so I think I'm going to sit tight and wait for the next bugfix before reinstalling, since it's bound to come out relatively soon. No big loss, the most I've run into to date has been the new trees and the existence of the Discipline skill. I never even needed it, since I only had kobolds who ran away, and none of my dwarves have entered existential crisis mode yet.
so I'm contemplating a base design centered on a gigantic magma piston, taking up many z-levels for magma storage and distribution, with an enormous empty area around it. maybe building a rookery into the walls if I get to tame some flying beasty. I imagine an army backed by cave swallows could be neat? I think I'd want to keep most segments of the fort seperate from each other, perhaps using an automated minecart system to shuttle food and materials around. with so much open area, I'd obviously want marksdwarves out the wazoo, and maybe some other type to clear the warrens.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Huh, Adventure mode crashes a lot more easily than fortress mode now. I guess save gets corrupted if you save and reload enough times or something? Either way, I retired and now trying to start adventure mode starts a crash on calendar, but toady apparently fixed that today so maybe after second patch adventure mode will be as stable as fortress mode

So... Carnies or mimes? Which one fits divine servants better?
