[up][up][up]I'm not sure what difference "soo" vs. "soon" makes for what I was saying.

I really did mean that mountain homes weren't underground even back when you could visit them. Remembering a little more, that's not exactly right. They were underground, just very unimpressive—basically just square pits a couple stories deep.

[up][up]Sites for all races were reachable until like ~.31.08 (whenever it was that Toady introduced sprawl).

Have you considered immigrant culling?

But culling is better... Nothing like a dank pit filled with the rotting bodies of children, pets, and those who were not of use to the fortress.

Never mind it frequently causes a massive tantrum spiral unless you make all the dwarves happy some how.

Amazingly that alone doesn't always work.

Experience has shown that also having good booze, good food, good rooms, and regular clothing goes a lot further and does more to keep them sane.

My dwarves are usually content with engraved bedrooms and a constant supply of vests and socks.

Not nearly a good enough singer for the Choir Invisible, and the Basement Room With A Synth Invisible is much less prestigious.

I wonder how much of it is down to our individual design choices and the what we put our dwarves through?

At work and can't remember:

Can ice be made into blocks?
Do I get a unit of stone from channeling out the floor, or only for the wall?

Not sure about ice blocks; I think so?

I believe it is one block for digging a channel into the floor, and two for a wall; equal to the number of stone squares dug through. [citation needed] though.

I think that every mining job will produce at most one stone. Not sure about if you channel a wall (thereby mining out the wall and the wall below), though.

EDIT:

@mrsaturn: Yeah, different castes for each blood color. By the way, if memory usage is anything to go by, my Homestuck mod's latest snapshot version is now the largest mod in existence, requiring a GB of RAM to run. God damn.

I just downloaded this game last night.

Yay! Now I'm one of Toady's undead bastard minions. Once I get some good shoes and a rope and pinion set-up so I can climb that cliff. I'm thinking trial and error bolstered by the tips I read in this forum.

No tilesets, I can manage just fine without them.

My first major goal, I think, once I get the basics, will be a kitten baited fire trap for maintaining a low enough population. evil grin Burn those pesky immigrants.

I usually deal with the housing issue by digging out gigantic dormitories and engrave the crap out of them. Actual rooms are for rent. Throw in a legendary dining room and your golden.

It's really alarming how much work you can get out of a single farm plot if you keep throwing farmers at it and you can always use more masons for large scale building projects.

I'd read earlier in this thread that a farmer rarely uses the full capacity of your farming area. Can you overcome that with more farmers?

[up] Seems that way but the real question is are the farmers better off as miners? Or maybe fisherdwarves? I prefer to keep my farmers at about 6-9 and draft the leftovers as lifeminers.

I think there's no point in signatures.

Vampires: Where others see Fun or a nuisance, I see the forefathers of the future Ringleaders of the Circus. Bear with me here.

IF you get a Vampire in your fortress, capture it and lock it up tight. Begin diverting resources from your main Fortress to a Spartan Vault that has a water source. Make sure it has the infrastructure needed to support an army (farms, breweries, and craft shops), can be sealed tightly and is comlpetely unconnected to your fortress. Reassign several squads of legendary Wardwarves there, along with some miners and the support staff, and bring out the prisoner. I'm sure you know what comes next. Kill the vampire and dump its bloody corpse into the water supply for the Vault. Now, send your vampire miners to find the Cotton Candy, with the soldiers close in tow when you strike it.

If you're one of the few who doesn't actually want Fun, block up the passage behind the soldiers so the Clowns can't get to the Vault. If you're a fun seeker, dig a path so the tainted water can reach the Clowns, sit back, and watch those Fun-loving nose squeakers possibly become Immortal Fun-loving nose squeakers. It'll be a battle for the ages, as the Immortal Clowns fight your very own Immortals. (Unless you're packing Silver weapons, anyway.)

Vampires can be dismembered and if you cut off the head they tend to die. Also you have to kill a vampire to make this work. They are less then immortal so much as harder to kill.

Okay, not AS good a plan, but still superior than just sending regular Dwarves. Killing a regular vampire? Hard. Killing a legendary axe/mace/swords/crossbow vampire? Even harder.

Making them vampires is interesting idea but has a few draw backs. Like they are vampires and eat other dwarves.

The rest of the plan is intended to minimize that. They don't actually starve to death, so locking them up before changing them is the plan. Lock them up, change them ASAP, and let the mayhem begin. Spartan Vault, you keep them isolated from the rest of Dwarfdom, only able to go into Hell. You can still control them, so they could actually colonize Hell itself for you.

If you're using external switches and doors to lock up the Vamps, no reason they can't be unleashed on the surface too.

Fun is supposed to be from mistakes made, not intentional. tongue I believe Intentional Fun is why Rotpar is now a swear.
