I think there could be explanations for that too, though.
A lot of the vampire-hunting Hunters might specialize in vampires. Sam and Dean either don't seem to specialize or seem to specialize in demons.
There might actually be a lot of attrition among vampire-hunting Hunters. It's pretty much implied that Hunting in general is not a safe job at all, we see plenty of Hunter's funerals, and it's always been implied that Dean expects to go out fighting.
Dean might have gotten used to having that level of plot-armor and fighting as though he has it.
How many cases do the brothers take? Lots? Every case they take increases the likelihood that a slip-up is just going to happen, eventually, no matter how good they are. And in this case it does seem to be a fluke thing — they're obviously skilled and defeated the Vamps and know how to go up against them and use their teamwork to have each others' backs, he just didn't notice the unfortunate piece of rebar. This one seems the most likely explanation.

A spinoff coming. Apparently nobody told Jared Paladecki...
You can only write so much in your forum signature. It's not fair that I want to write a piece of writing yet it will cut me off in the midFor more context,
Jensen and Danneel Ackles are producing a spinoff revolving around the Winchester parents' earlier life and courtship. And apparently didn't tell Jared Padalecki about it.

just let this thing die

"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."It must be brought back as many times as the Winchester boys.
[Sorry, the joke was obligatory]
I noped out of SPN pretty early, but this strikes me as a terrible thing to spin off? What is there to say besides “they were bad parents and are dead”?
I'm guessing this is one of those multiple demographics kinds of things, because as far as I know the "fangirl"-adjacent side of the viewership hates John Winchester with every fiber of their being, but the casual audiences, who tend to be older, more male, and also more likely to lean conservative, love him.
The Winchesters has been given full series order by The CW.
Robbie Thompson is penning the series and serving as an executive producer alongside Jensen Ackles and his wife/producing partner Danneel Ackles, and pilot director Glen Winter.
