A much better first encounter than this, at least. tongue

I am a bit embarrassed to admit that in my first playthrough of G/S, I got lost on the route to Cianwood... I really should have noticed that I was going in circles a lot sooner.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?

That may have happened to me as well when I first played — the safest way if you don't want to get lost fighting the trainers around the Whirl Islands (nearly wrote Seafoam for a second...) is to stay near the rocks on the left.

One, that's a question that goes in the "Pokemon in general" topic. Two it depends on the contest but according to Serebii using Hyper Beam on the last round is a great way to build up last minute appeal points.

Then again I'm basing this entirely on 3rd gen Pokemon Contests. I haven't touched them since R/S.

Most unfortunately, I dislike the way Gen4 contests are done, so I never bothered taking part in them (It's not like they give rare items for prizes like the Pokethlon). All I know of them I read about in Pokemon Special volume 31 (long since published by Chuang Yi Comics - go on, buy a copy!)

(Olivine, Restaurant where You used to Get the Strength HM, after Lunch)

Mari: Ah, that was the best fish & chips I've ever had!

Sailor/Chef: Thank you!

Sailor (who used to give away the Strength HM back in Gen 2): (sigh) Times are tough.

Mari: For real?

Sailor: Yes, for real. It isn't easy to get the finest fish for my cooking friend over behind the counter when the Guardian is sleeping and the waves can hit scary heights. To top it off, I was relieved of my part-time job of handing out HM Strength to kids after some silly twig of a girl complained that I was leering at her when I passed her the stupid thing.

Mari: Uh...

Sailor: Well, you kids stay behind the safety buoys, so you don't get the worst of it. My poor ship, on the other hand... (sigh) Times are tough.

(LP Note: I like to think of the barriers that stop players from traveling beyond the boundaries of the world map as safety buoys that mark the end of safe waters.)

Mari: Buy you a drink?

Sailor: Thanks, kid.

(Route 40)

Mari: That was strangely depressing.

(Gnaw looks a little sombre about it.)

Mari: No sense dwelling on it too much, it'll only make me angsty. (palms pokeball) C'mon Krabby, let's surf to the Whirl Islands!

(Route 41)

Mari: According to my web-trawling on the Whirl Islands, My best bet is to head to the north-eastern islands. (Loads Pokegear map) Let me see...

(Several wild Tentacool later, Mari reaches the Island in question.)

Mari: All right, Krabby, use the HM technique to cross the whirlpool!

(As she prepares to descend into the depths of the Whirl Islands's cave system, Gnaw grabs the Quick Claw from her backpack and hands it to Henry, who tagged along in the 6th slot.)

Gnaw: Rawr (Take this claw, it's going to get tough in there).

(Whirl Islands Cave System)

The trip down the cave networks was easy. Mari quickly figured out which way to go with a little exploration by Kenji, while the little Dratini Henry trained under Gnaw's supervision.

Gnaw: Rrrr, Growr! (Gestures)

  • (translation: Yes, lash out just just like that! Your tail muscles make you stronger than any human-made spring or whip!)

Climbing down the third ladder, Mari found herself in a brightly-lit room, the glow coming from several lamps.

Monk: Ah, you must be the child the Kimono Troupe has told me about! Welcome, young Mari, to one of the Guardian of Johto's Seas's caves. Come on in, the Troupe is waiting down in the ritual chamber.

On the way down, Mari discovers a side cavern that opens out over the large Waterfall Chamber. At a corner of the ledge is a Pokemon League item ball supply box, which opens as it wirelessly detects her pokedex (and its inserted Trainer Card).

Mari: Oh, wow! The scenery in this chamber is amazing! I wish that those camera guys could come down here so I could take a photo of this place. (looks down) Ah, there they are!

One quick climb down and a wild Horsea capture later...

(Whirl Islands Cave System - Waterfall Chamber)

Several large waterfalls pour down into a seemingly-bottomless pool. Huge, ancient ritual bells hung from recently-replaced ropes and ribbons. On the raised stone column where the Kimono Girls were doing some preparations, a pedestal seemed to attract Mari. As she stepped close, Sacchin Satsuki was the first to notice her.

Satsuki: Wow, you're a fast traveller, Mari!

Mari: Thanks! In truth, I came straight here after a healing session and lunch.

Tamao: Welcome to Waterfall Chamber, Mari. I hope you enjoyed the view from up there.

Sakura: This is one of the many places the Guardian of Johto's Seas visits to rest.

Komomo: As you have already proven your worthiness to meet Guardian Lugia, all you need to see it is something we know you already have.

Mari: Ah, I think I know what you're talking about. (rummages in pack, producing the box given to her by the President of Goldenrod Radio) You're referring to this (opens box) Feather, aren't you?

Koume: Oh, I've never seen the actual feather before!

Sakura: Please put the feather on the pedestal, then we can begin the ritual to call Lugia to meet you.

Mari: All right.

One graceful ritual dance later, the ritual bells begin to ring inexplicably.

Mari: Supernatural force?

Koume: The Guardian announces his arrival!

The Feather begans to glow upon the pedestal! The largest waterfall in the Chamber parts as a massive shape LOOMS.

Sakura: Here comes the Guardian!

Lugia gracefully passes through the waterfall, glistening with moisture. Landing in the seemingly-bottomless pool, she regards Mari calmly.

(LP Note: From this point, while the Kimono troupe and the game code refer to Lugia as Genderless, for the sake of story, I consider Mari's Lugia to be FEMALE. She is still genetically incompatible with the other pokemon, so no breeding, lol.)

Tamao: I think the Guardian wants you to come closer, Mari.

Mari: Uh, okay.

Mari surfs up to Lugia, which regards her calmly. Her body language seems to say, "Hello, child, you are the one who found my Feather and passed the Kimono Girl's ritual?"

(LP Note: Mari must be the World Champion at Charades to read body language that complex!)

Mari: Uh, hello, Lugia.

Lugia: Hmmmmm, mrrr.

  • (translation: Oh, don't worry, I only eat seafood. I just want to see if you are worthy for me to consider joining you in your travels.)

Lugia suddenly rears up and spreads her wings out with a ROAR, disrupting the flow of the waterfalls into the chamber momentarily.

Lugia: JAOOOOOOO!

  • (translation: Now, face me with a test of strength!)

Oh, wow! Another fan!

(Waterfall Chamber, Whirl Island Cave System)

As Lugia roared, a stone platform rose up from the depths of the seemingly-bottomless pool, to give Mari a place to stand and battle on. Curiously, carved lines on the stone resemble the official arena line markings as codified for sanctioned League battles.

Lugia: JAOOOOO! (If you can capture me, I will follow you in your quest until you retire! Now, we fight!)

Pokedex: Lugia has arisen!

Mari: Get ready, Gnaw! (consults expanded pokedex data) Use your Ice Fangs and try to freeze her!

Wasting no time, Gnaw uses his Waterfall Hidden Arte to clear the distance, waves of distorted light trailing him like disturbed surf. Caught by surprise, Lugia yelped as Gnaw struck home, the frost encrusting her plumage as she pulled back.

Lugia: Iiiiiiiaaa! (Ouch, you are surprisingly strong!)

Shielding her bruised body with her wings, Lugia suddenly swept them aside, releasing several pulses of ESP-powered shockwaves.

Pokedex: Lugia used Extrasensory!

(LP Note: Lugia does not have Recover in this battle. She has the moveset Hydro Pump, Aeroblast, Extrasensory, and Rain Dance.)

Spotting a flaw in the pattern of Lugia's PSI attack, Gnaw expertly grazed through the shockwaves, and clipped Lugia once again with Ice Fang. However, once again, Lugia managed to avoid getting encumbered by the ice that encrusted her bulk.

Pokedex: Scanning... Wild Lugia's Health is in the red!

Mari: All right, Gnaw, focus more on defense and evasion! (palming Heavy Balls) I hope these work as well as what Kurt claims they can do...

Gnaw, nodding, began to circle Lugia in a defensive stance.

A fierce whistling sound indicated the first of the Poke Heavy Ball barrage. It was shortly following by a crackling, as Lugia burst free, making the unfortunate custom pokeball shatter into useless shards.

Lugia: Giaaaa! (Nice try, but you'll have to do better than that!)

Mari: Oh... Good thing I brought dozens of pokeballs of all kinds then :D

Lugia: Luuuuu-JAOOOO! (Sadly for you, it's my turn now! Love Sign ~Master Spark!)

Pokedex: Lugia used Aeroblast!

Completely unprepared for the huge, all-consuming burst of directed air pressure, Gnaw was picked up and thrown across the room like a rag doll...

Pokemon Special Issue 32 GET!

...

D:

Poor awesome bodyguard duo ;_;

Despair will not chain me down! Onward with the LP!

(Whirl Islands, Waterfall Chamber)

As the thunderous roar of the Aeroblast echoed into the distance, Gnaw bounced off the chamber's back wall with a bone-crunching Thud. Landing in a painful heap, he was clearly in no condition to keep on battling.

Pokedex: Gnaw is unable to keep at it! Send out another pokemon y/n?

Mari: I'm not giving up! (hand reaches to pokeball holsters) Go, my...

(Unbidden, a pokeball with a Blackthorn Dragon Tamer's emblem popped out of her belt holster before she could choose.)

Mari: !

Pokedex: Henry has appeared!

With a glance back and a tail-gesture, Henry manages to get through to Mari.

Mari: You want me to heal Gnaw while you buy time? Uh... If you say so...

Lugia: Iaaaa. (Kid, you're too young and inexperienced to hope for any chance against me.)

The Quick Claw in Henry's mouth glows! Before Lugia could react, he darted like lightning, striking Lugia in her left wing with a Thunder Wave as he darted past!

Pokedex: Lugia was paralysed!

(LP Note: I seriously dropped brix when my Dratini really did go first and paralysed Lugia! Priority hax item ftw)

Unfortunately, Henry was unable to dodge the counterattack, and the PSI shockwave knocked him out cold.

Gnaw: Grrrumble. (Nice shot, kid, shame you didn't dodge that last one. Ouch, my spleen.)

Mari: Oh! Sosuke, cover Henry while I revive Gnaw and bring him back into shape!

Pre-Chinese New Year spring-cleaning interferes with my update schedule. Anyway, Pokemon Special #32 is awesome. Paka and Uji are cool dudes.

Quick Claw is delicious hax, but it's not the ultimate in cheese because it can and will fail you.

(Waterfall Chamber, Whirl Islands)

As the unconcious little Dratini coiled up in an untidy heap, Sosuke burst free from his pokeball to cover him while Mari tended to the badly battered Gnaw.

Mari: (crushing Revive crystal and applying the resulting mixture) Sorry I didn't catch that attack in time, Gnaw. Hope you can forgive me for that.

Gnaw: Grumph... (Well, as long as I don't get killed...)

Pokedex: Lugia used Hydro Pump!

Whirling about, fists crystalising over, Sosuke froze the column of water and used it to slide up to, then vault over, Lugia, whose attention was completely drawn towards him.

Mari: (palming another Heavy Ball as she finished wiping her hands of Revive residue) This time I got you!

Click-whooomph!

Nudge, nudge, nudge...

CRACK

Mari: D'oh, not again! That was almost a success!

Lugia: Mrrrhrrrhrhrrr. (Almost only counts in horseshoes or when using splash attacks!)

With that, she spun around and shot another Aeroblast at Sosuke.

Pokedex: It's not very effective...

(LP Note: Score one for type resistances!)

Mari: Here, take this Hyper potion while I try again, Gnaw!

Sosuke continued his attempt at distracting the Lugia, applying careful bursts of flame and frost from his Ice and Fire punches to deflect most of Lugia's attacks.

At one juncture, Lugia attempted to release another Aeroblast, but her paralysis made her to numb to do it properly and it fizzled.

Mari: (Palming yet another Heavy Ball) One more time! This time, I got you!

This time, the Heavy Ball just disintergrated shortly after containment.

Mari: Oh, come on!

Lugia: Rmph. (Is that the best you have?)

Pokedex: Lugia used Extrasensory!

Sosuke: EleraAAAAAA! (No, she's just GETTING WARMED UP! RIDE THE LIGHTNING!)

Riding the shockwave, the Electivire flipped into the air, then executed what could only be called a fake Volt Tackle. As the Thunderbolt (and Sosuke) shot right past Lugia's surprised face, Mari pitched another Heavy Ball.

Click!

Whoomph

Mari: Got you! Again...

Nudge, nudge...

Mari: C'mon, pleeease work! (crossing fingers)

Nudge...

(Finishing off his Hyper Potion, Gnaw stood up a little unsteadily as the healing potion took effect.)

Click!

Pokedex: Congratulations! Logging capture data on Lugia...

Mari: Phew.

(LP Note: It took me about a dozen more pokeballs than that! Mari gets plot bonus to cut out countless paragraphs of Gnaw and Sosuke wearying Lugia so that she'd stay in the Heavy Ball.)

Gnaw: Rawr! (high-fives Sosuke)

Pre-Chinese New Year update! Yaaaaaay!

Also, almost time to begin the selection for Mari's E4 team.

In ENG-HGSS news, I heard that the Rocket Admins and Executives are getting whole new names. Rocket Lance is now Proton, for example.

Several days later, after capturing Lugia

(Ecruteak Pokecenter)

Elm (Over the Pokegear phone): Next time, warn me before you catch something like Lugia again! I spilt coffee over my keyboard in shock when I read the Pokedex logs!

Mari: Hahaha, I'm sorry about that, doc. She wants to stick around with me for a bit, so I want her to temporarily bear my Trainer ID in her pokeball tags, okay? I'm not letting someone like the Rockets or those nasty Cipher people I read about in the Orre Channel catch hold of her.

Elm: Cipher? Can't say I've heard of any of their agents appearing in this region.

Mari: I know, that's why I can't be too careful in that regard.

Elm: By the way, you do know that having the Eight Badges makes you eligible to enter the Pokemon League and challenge the Elite Four?

Mari: I was planning to do that soon. You know anything about the new E4?

Elm: Nope, All I know is that Agatha retired, Lorelei went home to the Sevii Islands, and Lance left the E4 to return to training.

Mari: Oh... Well, I guess I'll have to take them on and find out who's the new members then.

(Blackthorn Pokemart)

Mari: I need to buy a few essential supplies and a stack of Dusk Balls. Oh, it's you!

(LP: By now, most of you should already know about Blackthorn Mart's stock of Dusk Balls. They are the best custom Pokeballs to come from Gen4 for us nocturnal folk!)

Nintendo Courier: Hey there, kid. it's been a bit, hasn't it?

Mari: It's only been a few weeks.

Nintendo Courier: It felt like a lot longer to me. Say, let me check you Trainer ID here... (keying in something on DS) ...Aha! You're eligible to receive an Enigma Crystal!

Mari: Another Event freebie?

Nintendo Courier: Yup. You find out what it does later.

(LP Note: lol spoiler time! It's actually a Soul Dew, as you will find out later in Pewter. Also needed to get the other Lati@s you normally don't find in your cartridge, since some will have Latios and others will have Latias.)

Mari: Is this a fossil of some kind?

Courier: It might be, but I wasn't told so I'm not sure.

(Blackthorn Pokecenter, Storage area)

Mari: All right. Gnaw, Sosuke, Yuyuko, Kenji, guys. I need to choose from you people the six who will accompany me to Indigo Plateau to take the next step to the League Championship.

(Gnaw looks expectant.)

Mari: Oh, don't worry Gnaw, you're the team leader. Kenji, I think with a little more training, you'll be able to join Gnaw. Sosuke, you're an awesome hard hitter, so you're probably going to join Gnaw too...

And here, we come to the Audience Participation section of the LP!

I need readers to help me select from my pokemon who to bring with Gnaw and Kenji to take on the Four. Leafeon had a team slot to take on Bato in Victory Road, but that was an earlier request and we're done with that part.

Anyways, here are the guys ready for voting:

  • Sosuke the Hasty Electivire. He's a mixed hardhitter with Thunderbolt and Fire/Ice Punch, and he knows Cross Chop too.

  • Yuyuko, the Modest Gengar. She's a glass cannon with Border of Life Shadow Ball, Psychic, Focus Blast, and Hypnosis. (You can buy the F-Blast TM at Goldenrod in HGSS!)

  • Kenji, the Adamant ninja duck Farfetch'd. He knows the Fly and Cut HM techniques, and has mastered Aerial Ace and False Swipe (for capturing wild encounters).

  • Beedrill, who needs a name. It will eventually know Toxic Spikes, Endeavour, and a couple other techniques once I'm done training it.

  • Butterfree, who also needs a name. it was a Caterpie traded in by Renko, and will know some Status Powder attacks and a few special moves when I'm done training it.

  • An Adamant Leafeon, he needs a name. Sadly, Leaf Blade is not an option until Level 71, so he'll be stuck with Facade and Razor Leaf and Quick Attack.

  • A relaxed Lanturn, who also needs a name. It knows Surf and Thunder Wave, and I need two more moves for it - Confuse Ray, Discharge, and Ice Beam are among my picks.

  • A Naive Miltank, who also needs a name.

  • An Impish Kangaskhan, who also needs a name.

  • The Lonely Mew, who will need a moveset (and I have so many options!)

  • My Impish Lugia, who wants a Physical moveset.

Of course, some of you may not want me to just blast through with Uber or Legendary power.

Next: Raikou and Entei!
