@September: The way Eddie's currently discussing it, the warning page could be clicked through without registration. I offered a registration requirement as a suggestion, but if we can get away without it, so much the better. The only advantage that registration will offer (other than editing privileges) is that you can permanently opt-in through the filter.

@GMH: People younger than 13 are not allowed by federal law (if I remember correctly) to register for sites without their parents' approval.

Could we still get in trouble for Image Links pages?

If those are trouble we should be able to trash those. Or move them to another site. They don't get much traffic anyway.

Image Links may need to be put behind the NSFG wall, if there's any chance they could contain objectionable content.

I don't think that we're supposed to have NSFW images to begin with.

That's true, policy states no images that are NSFW, either uploaded or linked. We aren't even supposed to link to NSFW content, period. The issue here seems mainly to be a matter of the topics we're discussing on the wiki and our somewhat lax language policy, plus the lack of accountability for editing.

Here's another thought, and I know it's radical: Cut all images on work and trope pages aside from Trope Tan and the TV Tropes logo, and cut avatar galleries. I dunno how much bandwidth is taken up by images but I have to think it's a sizeable amount, and wherever costs can be cut needs to be considered.

Not likely to happen. Especially not avatar galleries.

Avatars are essential, but yeah-we almost certainly have way too much support for them.

Oh, please no. Good images are illustrative and helpful, and pages without images tend to look rather bland by comparison, I think.

Eddie's said before that image hosting is not enough of a chunk of the site's load to matter in this regard. It might have to be part of a general cut, but the issue isn't incremental bandwidth, it's the ability to survive on a lower package - the difference between, for example, 1 TB per month versus 500 GB per month.

It's implied by the "no linking to pages that contain adult content" part of the rules. If we're going to wall off the NSFG part of the site, there must be an actual, you know, wall there.

Unless I am misunderstanding, does this mean that a page about a Safe For Work Trope or work can not link to NSFW pages, even with a warning in place?

Because that would kind of break the entire purpose of this Wiki, if NSFW pages are completely segregated from SFW pages...

Nuts. Still, though, if that's what it takes, I can live without images.

You are misunderstanding. We can link to these articles but a warning page will come up if someone clicks on them and has not opted in.

Also, it's a good idea to entirely remove wicks that aren't suitable for a work's rating; for example, Fetish Fuel on The Care Bears.

Regarding the image thing: I don't think the site is hurting for storage capacity; and even if it is, running cleanups on unlinked images and occasionally purging history will solve that problem nicely. The main penalty with images, avatar or otherwise, is simply delivering them; the total quantity hosted on the site is nearly irrelevant.

I wouldn't mind cutting all images except the logo and Trope-tan and Tropey the Wonder Dog and such.

Avatar galleries could be limited to like 5 or 10 pictures, or at worst just 1 anyway. Like how every site on the internet does this. (Well, every other; the rest simply have you host remotely.)

Because as it stands, I know I use the image uploader like photobucket or imageshack—since I can't post remote images here, but I can link to images hosted here elsewhere...yeah.

Like I said, disk space isn't the problem necessarily, and bandwidth is an incremental issue that only really matters if we have to drop down to a lower tier of service.

Disabling off-site linking would definitely help though. That's an obvious and relatively painless casualty; we aren't Photobucket and people should not be using us to host their family photos.

I don't think anyone uses it for that, currently; I just mean that the reaction images that I use are uploaded only here, and when I occasionally need them elsewhere I just link to them here.

Granted, I do most of my forum-posting here. I guess if I re-became active on Live Journal I might have another use for them...

Well, if this changed, I'd just have to make a photobucket or imageshack copy of every image.

Also, it's a good idea to entirely remove wicks that aren't suitable for a work's rating; for example, Fetish Fuel on The Care Bears.

Cut it, or move to the shadow server? Because that difference makes a lot in terms of how much sex slaves we are to Google. Besides, what happens if there is an instance of a trope that relies on an X in media being a Fetish Fuel for Y? The entire point of Fetish Fuel and such stuff, like Nightmare Fuel, is that it is by design independent of the work's rating.

Also, disabling hotlinking from this site... wasn't that done already at some point? I seem to recall a discussion to that regard...
