I'm going to hazard a guess that he means "sponsor" in the Alcoholics Anonymous sense of the word: someone (usually another AA member) you talk to when you're having urges or difficulty coping with your issues who helps you keep it under control. Basically, your personal unlicensed therapist.

Does it really matter what flavour of issue he's having on our end? Stress is stress and exacerbates a whole range of problems.
