honestly, i think oblivion had some of the worst questlines, at least in regards to the mage's guild, which is just non-stop pain and stupidity.

the dark brotherhood quests were nice though, at least untill the kill everyone in the sanctuary quest, at which point it completely fell apart.

and the murder mystery where you play the killer quest; that was fun, but kind of sadly limited.

morrowind's gameplay was absolutely terrible in every way imaginable. the questlines however, felt the best of the lot. when i worked my way up the mage's guild or the telvani it felt like an actual accomplishment and didnt feel like a complete chore, even though everyone in those quests was arguably as equally assholish as in oblivion's mage-guild.

i might be biased though, since oblivion was the last in the line of elder scrolls games to play (skyrim -> daggerfall -> morrowind -> oblivion)

holy shit skywind looks amazing

Weird idea number one million - "Yeah, it's a brilliant notion to play the "How To Train Your Dragon" soundtrack album and play Oblivion at the same time. What can possibly go wrong?"grin

Trying the Immersive Weapons mod, anyone else do that?

Sadly, I don't have the PC version, so no mods for me.

Immersive Weapons mod works fairly well. Decent integration and doesn't screw up mods that also introduce new weapons and armor.

I must say, Oblivion is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine. On one hand, I am fully aware just how dumbed down it is when compared to Morrowind.

Some of the questlines are either a laughing stock (the INCREDIBLY cliche Mages Guild questline where you don't even have to have any magical skill in order to become the Archmage, or the Arena that is just a mindless slashfest with no personality at all), or PAINFULLY linear (Why can't I refuse to murder everyone is the Dark Sanctuary? Why can't I reveal who is the murderer before we go to the Night Mother?!).

The game almost never gives you the ability to make any kind of choice, especially meaningful ones. Your degree of "choice" in this game usually boils down to "you can do this quest now or later". Come to think of it, do we have a genre for railroaded open world games? Because that's what I would classify Oblivion as.

Nearly every single quest requires fighting with someone, most commonly just mobs slapped across your path. Many quests inexplicably end up sending you through dungeons with randomly spawned enemies, even ones where it doesn't make a lot of sense (*cough* Thieves Guild, last quest *cough*). What does it remind me of... oh yeah! Diablo. Yeah. That's what Oblivion is, just an open world Diablo. Mostly fighting and very little of anything else. Why is this game called an RPG instead of a Hack'n'Slash, again?

And let's not even forget about things such as the game using less than 20 voice actors total (4 of which are used for unique characters, while everyone else gets reused to ridiculous extremes), the level scalling (about which I actually forgot, courtesy of mods) and limited array of available items (again, fixable with mods)...

And yet, despite these problems, I still find this game enjoyable. It's quite possibly a mixture of nostalgia (I probably finished this game several times over in the past) and the fact that I just like its simplistic nature, even if the lack of choice gets a bit grating at times. If anything, it's a good game for some mindless entertainment and for learning what to do and what NOT to do if I was ever to make an RPG game myself (which likely isn't going to happen, but who knows...).
