We never did an actual Wick Check, did we? That would be a good thing to do. Misuse is generally the best argument for renaming a trope with good stats.

Rhymes with "Protracted."

But not vital, and still didn't stop "The Mario" from getting renamed.

EDIT: Still going to check though.

EDIT EDIT: Okay, there isn't much misuse. But again, that's not a guarantee against a rename (as in crowners work better), and at the very least, the uses fall under YMMV, so I think this is a subjective trope.

Well, I certainly know who Francois Truffaut is... that said, I always have to remind myself what he was right about. Knowing what I do about the man, my first thought would be that this has something to do with directing films. I end up remembering that this trope has something to do with the first chapter of Slaughterhouse Five to get it right.

Plus there could be plenty of lampshading lines that would make better trope namers.

Any more thoughts on switching with the redirect Do Not Do This Cool Thing?

Well there might be other names as well, but I think we should make a single prop crowner first.

Count me as another person who can never remember what the heck Truffaut was right about.

Also, 207 wicks for a trope this common, and for one which has been around as long as this one has, seems like serious underuse. (Though I admit that's a bit of a subjective claim.)

Speaking words of fandom: let it squee, let it squee.

I agree that it could use a rename, but coming up with a good one is hard. I'd say Accidental Reverse Psychology, but that sounds more like a plot trope than what this is actually about. Accidental Reverse Psychology Aesop, maybe?

In the absence of better suggestions, I think the existing redirect, Do Not Do This Cool Thing may be good enough.

I'm certainly open to better suggestions, though!

edit: Warning Backfire? Warning As Advertisement? (That second sounds more like the invoked version of the trope, I suppose.)

Thinking about it, the redirect works best, and covers the main points.

DNDTCT does have an undeniable charm to it. I think Warning Backfire might make a good searchable redirect, though. Or something with "backfire" in it.

Bump for more votes.

edit: note that the usage numbers suggest that this is way underused. It's a very common trope. Maybe that should be added to Pro? Or at least mentioned somewhere in the crowner, even if it's just listed as neutral, since it can't really be proven.

I think this should be a subjective trope. Apart from in-story examples, it is an audience reaction. Whether something looks 'cool' on screen is ultimately in the viewer's eye.

About a potential rename: Do Not Do This Cool Thing is good, but Theres No Such Thing As An Anti War Movie or There Are No Anti War Movies would also be spot-on. There's nothing wrong with Truffaut Was Right staying as a redirect, though.

Let's just say and leave it at that.

[up]I wouldn't want a title that sounds like this trope is purely about war movies. It covers a lot of other things, like gangster movies.

[up]I understand, but I think it's not really that hard to understand that this is a broader trope.

This is most certainly an Audience Reaction, and hardly one that applies equally to everyone. If it's not flagged subjective, it should be.

It seems that Truffaut is a name and a principle that transends TV Tropes. So my first thought concerning a rename would be something like Truffauts Neutered Aesop Theory.

If we're renaming it, and the crowner suggest we are, I would prefer to drop all reference to Truffaut. First, a lot of people don't know who he is, which is the problem with the trope at the moment. Second, it makes me think of truffles, which are not related. Second, we have the perfectly indicative Do Not Do This Cool Thing to fall back on.

Crowner is at +11, with more than a 2:1 ratio. Can we call it? Or clock it, at least?
