The TV Tropes Furry Club

Since it's become a big topic among the fandom recently, what does everyone think of Zootopia? It looks like it could potentially be very interesting.

Saw the teaser trailer. Looked interesting.

It sure did. Between Zootopia, Kung Fu Panda 3, and True Tail, 2016 is already looking like a great year for furry fans.

And then theres Ratchet And Clank and Sly Cooper coming the same year as well.

Zootopia teaser... Eh, I don't see the point of the whole "lets explain anthropomorphism" part. Honestly came off a little furry-fandom-bait-ish. Like someone on the team is trying a bit too hard to convince viewers that the fandom isn't weird.

It's not like animal filled worlds without humans are anything new, especially for Disney.

Though apart from Kung-fu Panda, there has been a decline of movies with animal focused casts in recent years, I think...

I'm under the impression that it's going to be a parody and deconstruction of the whole "talking animal genre". Hence the teaser.

I'm sort of neutral on it, it may be interesting but it doesn't really have anything to... stand out?

So far I know theres going to be Fantastic Racism as many species do not get along by stereotype and everyone just accepts it as "how it is"

And then fox guy and rabbit cop form a Dynamic Duo for whatever reason and everyone elses specist minds are blown.

Not much else is known. Hard to judge with barebones info. Though it can't be terrible...?

So I've mentioned it before, but we have had newcomers since then, has everyone seen Beyond The Western Deep? I'm pretty damn fond of it. Very Redwally-y without the heavy handed christian overtones.

Looks interesting. I'll have to check it out.

Haha whoops. I don't even remember you posting this before. I assumed I was one of the newcomers. Anyway, I actually am checking it out this time. Reading through the first chapter right now.

I do have a question though about the furry fandom though. Why do I find some people identifying as certain animals as a part of there online persona? Is there some deeper reasoning to it? Or am I just looking to much in it and people are just picking there favorite animals to represent themselves as?

I mean personally via the favorite logic I would either be a long-eared white furred bunny, a white furred wolf, a snow fox, a mako shark, or a rattlesnake in the furry fandom (I honest can't decide which. They are all animals I like other then the standards cats and dogs)

But most people just pick whatever appeals to them, without much deeper meaning.

Some folks might start talking about "spirit animals" like it was some native thing, but that's their business and atleast they don't go overboard.

All in all I suppose it's just putting on a different face when online. And I think everyone kind of does that when being shielded by anonymity. Atleast it's not a case of The GIFT and turning everyone into an asswipe.

It's not something I personally do. I have a few animals that I really like in particular and I've made plenty of OC's, but I don't really identify with any of them.

There are those people who insist to be called by their "true" (made-up furry) name and will bite your head off if you "opress them" with their "filthy human name"

Though that mentality exists outside this fandom. Just look at tumblr and their "new pronouns" or those people who truly believe they are of a humanoid alien species based off of some series.

Fandoms can get scary and crazy, but it happens outside them too. Not sure if comforting or not.

Thanks for the explanation. I always feared I was doing something wrong on the furry servers I visit in some of the games I play when I just labeled myself as one of my favorite animals if anyone asked me about it.

The otherkin article on This Very Wiki does say : "Contrary to popular belief, Otherkin is not directly tied to the Furry Fandom. There are Otherkin who are not furries, and vice-versa, and while there are Otherkin furries, it is not a requirement for either group to belong to the other."

Yeah, a "fursona" isn't even required to be part of the fandom.

And fuck, humans are an animal too if you want to be a smartass about it!

Well I never said otherkin are exclusively furry. (Heck, I even did the whole "truly believes they are some humanoid alien" thing)

Though the most common otherkin seems to be furries.

Lance is a lion because I happen to like lions, and am heavily invested in the archetypes thereupon. Being anything else is... incorrect, for reasons I find myself unable to articulate. It's a self image thing, the shape of my Animus. Doesn't mean I'm a "Lion in a human body" It's just that I'm a human who mantles the Lion.

Damn I wish I could draw my own caricatures....

And then I thought generic vulpine is too same-ish with half the fandom, so I weirded it up some more!

So, Beyond the Western Deep is great ! I definitely recommend it. Thanks for the suggestion, Lance.

...but now I'm left stranded in the middle of the mother of all plot twists. Luckily the next update is tomorrow, but the webcomic seems quite slow-paced.
