Final Fantasy general

Go To

Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Ah yes, I vaguely remember them in X now. Still don't remember them in XV though.

They're most often guards or troops of some kind as well.

I think XV's Biggs and Wedge are quite memorable due to their distinctive voices.

[up] David Lodge (Wedge) also voices Louisiox from XIV. Biggs is Fred Tatasciore who has 1099 VA credits.

Lot R, Star Wars and the like are so popular and ubiquitous that even if, by some chance, you weren't drawing from them, people will see similarities anyway. And you might be drawing from the even more primordial storytelling soup they took from.

Hell, this whole site is made up of people finding connections where many may not have even existed or been intended or what have you, but that's a big think for another thread.

FFXII is a Star Wars where the meanest baddie dies early and the other baddies aren't as naughty as Papa Palps.

E[isoed Gladiolus was underwhelming and Episode Propmto was really neat. Oh, I beat those recently because I was craving them.

FF 4 is a Star Wars that starts out with Luke already on the Dark Side and slowly going to the Light, but at teh cost of Han Solo getting brainwashed by Darth Vader. Also Leia's constantly wearing her Jabba slave bikini and Lando Calrissian's a ninja and there's a version of Rey that can summon gods and I kinda forgot where I was going with this

[up][up]Yeah, that was my point. Even if you're not drawing on them directly, you're probably drawing on something that is, however many times removed. But we're talking about Final Fantasy, here— they're never even pretended otherwise. I didn't bring it up as a criticism.

[up] I am also agreeing with you.

Honestly, doe, comparing stuff to the obvious suspects is easy and boring. I prefer finding the more obscure ideas.

Like, is Cloud of Darkness a reference to Nyx, the Greek Primordial Goddess of the night? Is that why it takes the form of waifu grill?

In traditional Greek myths, Nyx is often thought of as being born directly from Chaos, the nothing that existed before all else. In this reading of COD as Nyx, this would be something of an inversion.

Well, that, and they wanted something unusual after the Muscular Wizard. And a giant green naked lady is rather unusual even in today's climate.

New video showing of some of Ignis's skills for Episode Ignis (and the main game I assume)

Also new track.

Wow, just noticed that another two Hunt-related trophies didn't pop for me either. Zodiac Age has so far introduced minor improvements to gameplay and managed to add the glitchiest set of trophies I've seen in a game. Good job?

Which trophies? Know that due to changes to the bestiary you might’ve killed a hunt in the 100 battles thing but you also need to kill it in the main game.

I looked at some English gameplay for Ramza since I was curious if he was still voiced by Phil Lamarr. He is.

It still has that problem of using next to nothing but references and shout outs for all the characters dialogue though, and out of context a lot of these lines either make no sense at all or misrepresent a character. ie

It comes from a battle in a place called the Sand Rat Den, a desert hide out for bandits, and he was being kind of sarcastic there since the enemies are all nicknamed the Sand Rats. Without that, though, it's just like Ramza's calling a bunch of other heroes rats because he's a douche.

[up] It is weird hearing that line out of context...

... but still, I'm glad to get to play as Ramza when it's released! I was so excited when I heard he was playable. I mean I prefer his Chapters 2 and 3 apparel over his Chapter 1 outfit, but regardless I am glad to have Ramza in the game.

Also it is pretty cool they got his English VA from War of the Lions.

If you do a good job voicing a character for an SE thing, congratulations.

You now have a job for the rest of your life. Troy Baker doesn't do Japanese stuff any more, except for whenever Snow shows up in pretty much anything, because SE must take really good care of their voice actors.

Shame their voice direction and the scripts they give them are hit or miss at best.

Yeah. But the actors don't care of it's Shakespeare or shlock so long as they get paid, and even despite the bad writing some of them still turn in grade A performances.

  • Ramza just kicked the crap out of a bunch of heroes.

  • He called them rats which makes him sound mean.
