Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

Did SE ever stop trolling XI players with Absolute Virtue and Pandemonium Warden?

They never really outright trolled, they just never gave info on how to outright defeat it. Which was SE's policy back then, let the players figure it out but do not allow outright exploits. They eventually released a video with hints on how to defeat them and then way later on nerfed them into oblivion.

Well, the Brothers' auto-heal mechanic in Final Fantasy 8 wasn't bad, they were sort of a Puzzle Boss which still gave you the possibility of ignoring the puzzle and just brute-forcing through the healing factor.

Hardest bosses, huh.

Carry Armor is so...WEIRD. Its a thoroughly nothing boss from a plot perspective. Reno, who is a real boss you might expect to fight, just says "hey, fight this thing!" and runs off. And yet it turns out to be one of he more challenging battles.

FFVIII has no hard bosses in Vanilla but in the Requiem mod I played, there is no contest. It's Fujin and Raijin in Balamb. They killed me dozens of times in less than a minute.

FFIX...Necron, because of his bullshit mechanic of having "multiple parts". Perhaps not a problem in vanilla but in mods, I barely can beat him, or I simply cannot beat him.

Elder Wyrm in FFXII is indeed tough. Also The Undying can fuck you up if you are too cock y or careless like I was one time. Also first Demon Wall.

FFXIII...Orphan. Fucking Orphan. Unless you chump it with Poison, I don't know how you're supposed to win. I hate Insta Death moves and I hate that it can bust out its sword attack whenever it feels like it later on.

Hardest bosses discounting bonus bosses?

Without tricks I think Yunalesca is probably one of the worst, with knowing mechanics she is a joke.

I still have never beaten LR's final boss on Hard Mode without turning on the 'remove the max stat cap option' in the cheats.

XIII's bosses were decently hard with an occasional unlucky death but nothing out right frustrating.

That is about it. FF games are all way too damn easy, the only one with a steady difficultly curve was XIII.

V probably has the most stumbling block bosses, but it also is probably one of the the least severe in terms of how much of a stumbling block those bosses are outside of the optional superbosses.

I sure said that!

Yunalesca is a bitch. How are you suppose to know that Zombie blocks Death?

It's one of the things I hate about trying established franchises: that the games have these little tropes that OBVIOUSLY everybody already knows because they've been playing it for ages and it's ingrained into their heads like second nature, without stopping to consider that perhaps someone new to the franchise wouldn't know about it.

I recall Superjeenius' FFVIII let's play, where he tried constantly to inflict doom on enemies that he had already inflicted with zombie, before finally deciding "It doesn't ever work" and never looking at doom again.

Edit: What I meant was that he gave up on doom. He was overjoyed when he revived the zombie boss, and upon finding out he could zombie + revive enemies.

To be fair, there is an /alternative/ option with Yunalesca that is viable, All you need to do is go rob a few zanarkand mobs of their items and you can make Deathproof or at least Deathward gear. Though this doesn't help people who never bothered with stealing nor customization

The game has you deal with zombie several times before, though, to be fair, and Yunalesca is a near-end game boss.

Seymour demonstrates the reversed effects of healing with it, you fight a boss who isn't inherently undead and instead has the zombie status (who you can than throw phoenix downs at to kill in two turns), and you fight a bunch of zombified guards outside of Zankarkand.

Also, a boss who's about trial and error would be fine if she wasn't proceeded by a 5 minute, unskippable cutscene.

[up][up]I don't think there are any enemies in Zanarkand that have Farplane Shadows or Farplane Winds.

Well, the negative effects of zombie are made obvious. But at what point does it make "undead = immune to instantkill" clear?

Because that's what causes wipe after wipe. That the game never explains how to block an instant kill spell.

Customizing gear requires a metric ton of patience and gil, considering how many items are required to install an effect, and more than a few of them require bribing instead of stealing.

The item drops in the Dome are actually kind of a dick move. Candles of Life give Zombieproof, which a new player may be tempted to use.

Reminds me of trying to use Ribbons or Amulets against Goddess.

Which was detrimental, as it made it not only didn't block the unique version of Zombie caused by Cloudy Heaven, but it impossible to apply or remove Zombie status on your own.

FFVIII has no hard bosses in Vanilla

Hey.

Provided you don't break the Junction System and farm magic, Ultimecia, the Weapons, Diablo, and Adell are a huge pain.

I dunno, FF games usually have at least a few really annoying bosses per game, and I can't think of a single final boss that I found easy.

[up][up][up] How do you break something that is already broken? I tried playing FFVIII with a challenge run but it was still too easy I was purposefully denying myself the best Junctions and I still had no difficulty with any boss all the way up to the Ragnarok, at which point I just quit out of sheer boredom.

The first time I played ff8 I played it as any child would play an RPG. No triple triad, levelling up normally, stocking magic and junctioning it as it comes, etc. I didn't manage to stock many Auras and I only had a few Ultimas. I didn't even find Brothers, Doomtrain, or Leviathan until the final dungeon.

The game is still really really easy. There weren't any enemies that ever posed a roadblock. Adel was hard until I realised all I had to do was heal Rinoa. Ultimecia was an actual challenge because of the battle of attrition + Apocalypse out of nowhere, but I needed no more than one Holy War to get rid of her.

I found the Deep Sea Research centre years later thanks to the internet. Now that place was annoying.

I think that II's battle system makes sense from the perspective of Firion, Maria and Guy. They're untrained civilians trying to, well, get gud. I like it but I completely understand why people don't like it.

You gotta start somewhere.

It's not a terrible idea but it was way too ahead of its time, hence the best way to grind being "hit yourself for as many turns as you can until the goblins realize they're fighting lunatics and run".

There's also a lot of just dickish design elements in it, like all those "pick a door from three or more. One is correct, the others will teleport you into the center of a 9x9 tile room with 100% encounter rates".
