Because Kinkajou told me to.

So yeah, anything about Final Fantasy! I guess this would make a good starting point: Which are your favorite games in the series and why?

My two all-time favorites are tied between Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy IX. They're both very fun games that don't take themselves too seriously while still being legitimately emotional. On top of that, Zidane is my favorite Final Fantasy lead in the entire series. He's light-hearted, fun, and a generally nice guy to be around. FFV also has the advantage of having one of, if not the best, Job System in an FF game. Both FFV and FFIX make characters customizable while keeping them all unique in their own way. I'm also very fond of Final Fantasy I; it hasn't aged well, but it's classic, and like FFV, I played it tons as a kid.

I assume we'll drift around to various other FF-related discussions as the topic grows, right?

My favourite thing about the Occuria is not only do they speak in poetic meter, but Venat uses a different meter from the other ones.

[up][up] Yeah well, I'm not surprised. I think you are supposed to have a problem with Gods deciding what is and isn't good for humanity.

The fact that it is solely in mans hands that they let the world be ruled from does seem pretty prejudiced against the other races. And then that disaster happens that wipes them all out by the time of Tactics.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

The Occurias don't seem very different, Raithwall was a man, and all the main empires were human too - except that in the Occuria's case, the leaders are the humans they want to be in charge.

They don't care about equality or anything, they just care about history, with their Blue-and-Orange Morality to boot.

Again, Vayne's methods are plain wrong, but its main objective is the right one.

Also, we don't know anything about the catastrophe. I think it's equally likely that the non-humes were wiped out, or that they just found a way to get the hell out of that universe where humes kept fighting each other which led to Tactics' verse. After all, the most magically and mystically inclined races aren't human (viera and nu mou), and the Viera already knew a way to stay away from humans back in XII.

The Occuria have been around infinitely longer than humans. They live and breathe on a scale humans can't even fathom.

Yet they leave the world be for centuries at a time. They have no interest in running a police state or enslaving people. It's explained, as typical of this game, very eloquently:

Venat: My counsel did but guide your able hand. Through power of Man, the Stones did you perfect. Yes. So much accomplished in six fleeting years. Man's fervor o'er all obstacles prevailing.

Cid: Our lives are much too short. You undying might waste long centuries away, but we, I fear, cannot.

Vayne: Just so. Had we more time, we might have used more "prudent" measures.

The Occuria are a more...natural force. Think of it like mountains or whatever. Aren't some of them formed from continents colliding? Stuff like this takes forever by the lifespan of a human being. If a human wants to make a mountain, their only solution is "how much do we have to blow up?" There is no grace, just destruction.

That is the center of the conflict in FFXII. Humans have no choice but to be as crude and destructive as possible if they want to wrestle with beings that think and act on a completely different order of magnitude.

The Occuria have enough power to destroy the entire planet. Be grateful no hume ever had that level of power.

I'm kinda prejudiced against the Occuria for deciding they have a better grasp of politics when they don't even check in for centuries at a time and that Plan A for them is always nuking everyone who disagrees with their golden boy.

I sure said that!

[up][up] Really, don't bother. It's been pretty clear on different occasions that our morality scales are polar opposites, so trying to convince me will simply not work. It has been this way since you decided that Shepard being a Cerberus cronie was the best way to play Mass Effect.

Well if you ever die and someone brings you back to life AND gives you a spaceship, I hope you are at least a little bit grateful. It's really only polite.

Anyway, new topic! This was something brought up on another board when a guy talked about his latest FFIX run:

" But [Necron] doesn't come out of nowhere thematically because the desire to live despite knowing the fragility of life and the inevitability of death is hammered into your skull about eight hundred times throughout FF 9."

Another guy responded with:

"Heck, that's a recurring theme in all of Final Fantasy.

Xande is made mortal by his master, so he drowns the world, stopping time so he'll never die. (I could be wrong about this, but I don't think he intentionally released the Cloud of Darkness, it's just that his actions screwed up the balance of light and dark and it had that effect)

Zemus resents the other Lunarians' decision to coexist with the Earth people and thinks they should wipe them out and take over Earth, and when struck down his hatred manifests itself as Zeromus.

Exdeath wants to use the Void to rule the world, but loses control of it, gets devoured and spat back out as Neo Exdeath, whose purpose is to destroy all life and then itself.

Kefka wants to eradicate all life because everybody's going to die and it's meaningless anyway."

Which prompted me to go "hey...you're kinda right."

Ultimecia is doing what she's doing because she's scared of dying and wants to avoid that.(At least, about two lines in the entire game hint at this being her motivation. FFVIII's writing, what else can you expect?)

FFX of course has its Spiral of Death and Seymour and Yunalesca giving you big speeches about how sad and pointless life is and we just have to distract ourselves from this fact through lies.

X-2 has Shuyin who wants to nuke the world because life sucks.

FFXIII has the fal'Cie who all just want to hurry up and die and Lightning has a whole big 'SHUT UP'" moment to Orphan about this very fact and how the heroes are better than fal'Cie because they never gave up on life.

And then XIII-2 has Caius, who has also given up on life and wants only for him and Yeul to "die."

XII kinda has it but it's a bit less blatant. The fact humans die relatively fast is brought up a couple times to contrast with the Occuria but I never really felt like it was a central message like in the other games.

Some people are saying it might be a remake.

I really doubt that, but some small part of me kind of wants it to be. Maybe something a little closer to what they originally envisioned.

to be fair, it's not that hard to buy. i doubt a remaster would consume too many of their resources and even with xii being one of the more unpopular ff's they'd still make money.

The XIIHD announcement in question. Given the nature of the event and presence of Sakamoto, I dare say there is a measure of legitimacy.

Yeah, we've known it was going to happen someday with how the team wanted to do it, it was the most requested remaster and they got the composer for E3(probably to build some hype by reminding people of the game) but I'm guessing this will be SE big reveal at Gamescom along with XV release date since Nomura says he has no plans to release KH 1.5/2.5 on current gen systems(IE PS 4).

I tend to gush about VII, VIII, and IX because of nostalgia.

But I still love this song: I remember this was the song Ellone supposedly sang to Laguna but I can't remember at what point in the story this happened. I don't remember hearing it when Laguna met her in the city.

[up][up] Yeah you said "Ellone" there instead of Julia. Ellone is the girl with the random psychic powers and Laguna's adopted daughter. Also Squall's "Sis."

As I recall, Julia never sang the song to Laguna. It became a hit after Laguna went missing because he's a dumb shit and nearly killed himself. Julia went on to release her hit song inspired by Laguna but since he was presumably dead she went on to marry General Caraway and have Rinoa.

HM...LAGUNA'S FIRST LOVE HAS A DAUGHTER WHO FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE SON OF HIS SECOND LOVE..... Some sort of "theme" or "message" here but I can't quite figure it out.

I think it has to do with hot dogs.

I gotta try some of that Japanese flavored bread that Zell was hankering for in the original game.

The message is that it's probably a good thing that Laguna and Julia never got together because of their respective kids.

It's almost incest, but not quite.

Eyes on Me is VIII's love theme, and variations of it pop up here and there, though I think the full version only appears in the credits.

I think it also plays when Squall and Rinoa are on their way back home after they find the Ragnarok.

Side note: the part when Rinoa is drifting in space is one of my favourites in the whole series, and is one of the few that still makes me cry.
