People who said that DQVII is a long ass game was not lying. I just past the 70hrs threshold and I still don't think I'm close to the end.

Oh wow. Looks like a game I'm going to have to devote my life to.

[up] Funny thing is to the way that Class Level Caps work, the game essentially forces you to take your time with progression. It's literally against the game design to grind and get overpowered to the point of steamrolling through the game, at least early on.

My only really complaint gameplay wise is the menu system is super clunky. Your items menu gets flooded with one time plot-important items you can't ditch. As you level up classes, your battle menu gets filled with a bunch of abilities and spells you'll probably never use except a select few. I wish there was a way to filter out or better organize this type of stuff.

VII already had a translation on the Playstation, but it's really hard to find.

i assume you mean the physical copy is hard to find?

cuz the game itself had an official release in america in 2001. as far as i know theres not been a retranslation or anything like that

[up] The 3DS version is a re-translation.

thats not what i meant.

the translation for the ps1 version of the game is not seperate from the game itself. either they were talking about the physical copy, or there was a fan re-translation for the ps1 game.

Yeah, I meant the physical copy. Someone on the last page thought the 3DS one was the first translated version.

Believe it or not, but the 3DS version is also somewhat streamlined- The insanely long start up was even longer- It'd be several hours before you saw your first Slime.

I sure said that!

I have the PS 1 version. It really does take ages to get going. It doesn't help that the translation is really bland. Not bad, exactly, but there's pretty much no personality to the dialogue.

The thing that sticks out to me, though, is that it's actually more episodic than most of the series is. Like, the Demon Lord or whatever is the reason all the lands are gone, but some of the time, there's no connection between him and the problem, or there is a connection, but it's absurdly weak.

Not Three Laws compliant.

I was aware VII was released for the Play Station but I have no interest in tracking down that version.

I have played a few Dragon Quest games, all on the DS. The games tend feel at times like they are trying to be long for the sake of being long. This was worst in VI, I felt that the game gave up on directing the player after you unlocked the ability to change classes.

I forgot to mention this in my last post but there was this really neat thing after you beat the final boss in the ios version of DQII.

If you go visit the Dragon Lord's descendent after you beat the game he calls you a Dragon Warrior. I'm not sure if this was in the original Japanese but I thought it was pretty neat.

So having played 5, partcularly the DS version, I'm curious about this Bianca Hoax that was being about in the last page.

I went with Flora/Nera (coz blue hair), but Bianca's life didn't seem particularly "ruined" after that.

My DA account... I draw stuff sometimes!

It was a popular myth that, in the Super Famicom version, Bianca's life was hell- Implied to be due to emotional and physical abuse- if you didn't marry her, and the distaste for that forcing of the choice of who to wed was so great that it was changed for the DS release.

I suspect it lasted as long as it did because DQ's modest popularity outside Japan lead to a lack of people both willing and able to factcheck such things.

also, bianca's like, the only good bride anyway, so naturally few people were willing not to marry her.

That's a strange rumor. I have to play Dragon Quest 5 sometime, if I find a copy of it.

It was also an easy rumor to start because The SNES and PS 2 versions of DQV was never localized outside of Japan and not many people imported or played the fan translated roms.

The hoax actually predates even the translation patch for the SNES version: it was found on a Japanese fan site from the '90s, and was also used, whether obliviously or deliberately, on one of the first English walkthroughs on Game FA Qs, which I'd imagine is probably where it disseminated from in the Western fandom.

So I ended up finishing DQVII at the 95-hour mark. Pretty enjoyable game overall. Like charming is the one word I'd use to describe it.

i think people were worried the dub would be removed to fit on the 3ds.

[up][up] There's new cutscenes in this release, so it had to be redubbed for consistency.
