I personally prefer having yangus tension up after using helm splitter enough times. If no one else is buffed and the boss uses wave of ice, that's one less attack that turn. And if the boss neglects to wave of ice he gets hammered.

In the US version of Dragon Quest VIII, Disruptive Wave was somehow rendered as Wave of Ice by mistake. This was corrected for the PAL version of the game and for all English releases of IX.

beat the troll, found the penultimate orb, got the sword of gaia, and now im about to enter the necrogond mountaints...

except ive been told im supposed to be level 30 (or 20 with reclassed characters) and yet my hero was still around lvl22 and my cleric 23, and my reclassed characters around 13 and 17. yikes. time to grind.

got through the mountains anyway. got the phoenix, entered baramos castle.

why is the phoenix so damn slow?!

So how "same-y" are the DQ games? I know a guy on another board who is also playing through the series for the first time and after DQV people told him to take a break so he didn't get burned out. That, plus I always heard DQ was the "stock" JRPG with the most stock gameplay and story imaginable.

It isn't like FF which reinvents the wheel with every installment.

the basic gameplay is always the same. there are a few details that change every now and then, such as III and IX's "create a character of a class and then bring them to your party"

IV plays identically to the other games but switches it up more narratively by changing the protagonist for each chapter, which usually means you have to change how you fight, slightly.

V is the same basic gameplay as usual, but i think it includes the ability to add some monsters to your party.

VI nothing unusual

VII reintroduces class changing, ive heard

VIII introduces a new leveling system, but aside from the visuals the battle system is the same

and IX has 8's level system, 3's party system, and 7 and 3's class change system.

V did have recruiting monsters as a gameplay mechanic.

I think the original version of VI also had monster recruiting but I could be wrong.

Speaking of being underleveled, when I beat 8 for the first time and looked at my post-game results, Trode was impressed of how I beat the game with my "puny levels."

So I beat the final boss underleveld and didn't even know it? Gee, he didn't feel that tough.

Then again, if any of you series veterans (since I only played through 2 games) would rate the difficulty of Rapthorne the fatass, what would you say it was?

Dhoulmagus is the biggest wall in the game. Frankly if you can beat him, there should be little challenge in beating the game underleveled, outside of the temptation to hunt Metal King Slimes for fun and profit.

do you think they explained why the rest of the world outside alefgard wasnt available in the first game during the 2nd? or do you think they just retroactively explained it in 3 with zoma's barrier?

It's not ever really explained, beyond, I suppose, a lack of need to leave the area- Relative to the various flavors of Satan that came after him, the Dragonlord is pretty small potatoes for this series' baddies.

returning to DQ 9, i cant help but feel they could have done so much more with the "celestial guardianship of mortals -> nurture fyggs -> offer to yggdrasil -> leave for the promised land" scenario.

i mean, you'd think that after centures of being looked after by celestials, humans would not fare so well when suddenly they begin living in a world without any form of divine protection- which would be the natural result of the celestials leaving for the almighty's realm. unfortunately, no one in celestia ever brings this possibility up, but you'd think worrying about this would be a natural result of a particularly empathic celestial growing attached to their wards. if it had happened, it could have lead to hesitation about leaving for the almighty's realm, creating tensions with the more prideful celestials who care only to leave for the almighty's realm.

aside from that, i think the whole psaro-recycle-corvus thing could have been dropped in favor of the celestial realm being ravaged by the gittish empire after they created what is essentially a tower of babel; after stealing the fyggs for themselves and using it to renew the empire's strength, they begin to expand their dominance, creating a more present enemy during the game.

their actions could have lead to resentment of the mortals from the celestials; those who only wished to leave for the almighty's realm could have despaired thinking they lost their chance, and simply give up their protectorate duties, allowing for a glimpse into the world if all of them were to have left for the promised land; in some cases, they might even take out their resentment on their wards, actively being the cause of a towns problems.

on the otherhand, it is a bit on the complicated side for DQ, but i feel it would have served better than the recycling of psaro and the non-existance of the overarching plot for 30 or so hours of the game.

I was looking up stuff on DQ VIII's remake for the 3DS.

Saw the ending where The hero marries Jessica. This pleases me.
