Yesterday, you were one of millions of people living in the city. Today, you've woken up as one of a small group of people, trapped inside a strange building. The lighting on this floor seems off... always a little too yellowish... and there's a strange, unstopping hum. Piles of stuff are scattered on the floor, as if the contents of a Goodwill store have been mixed together and then randomly searched through. Is this part of some sick, twisted psychological experiment, or have you somehow fallen into an alternate reality that is hostile to your existence? The walls are covered in yellow wallpaper that seems to be indestructible. There are no windows in the walls. You wake up next to a locked door marked 'Stairs'. There is no keyhole or even a handle on this side, and no way you can find to open the door.

Rules:

1) As GM, I am the final arbiter of reality. What I say goes, even if it contradicts something I said in the past.

2) Each floor has only one way to travel away from it, an elevator that only goes to one other floor. Elevators are one way, so once you have left a floor you will have no safe way of returning to it. Each floor also has a door marked 'Stairs' but there is NEVER a way to open this door from outside the stairwell. The only exception to this is floor one. Floor one has access to the stairwell and, hopefully, a way you can try to exit the building.

3) You will be starting at floor 13. There will be a logical sequence to explain what floor you go to from each floor, which your characters may (or may not) be able to deduce as the game goes on, so I know in advance which floor numbers you will visit. It goes Floor 13 -> 40 -> 20 -> 10 -> 05 -> 16 -> 08 -> 04 -> 02 -> Floor 1. Your character does not know in advance what the sequence is or how many floors they have to get through before they find floor one but you may have your character deduce the sequence once they have seen enough floor numbers to figure it out.

4)Before each new floor, players will be expected to give a short description of what they expect the next floor to be like. As GM, I will combine ideas but will feel free to ignore/refuse any ideas I don't like. Suggestions do not have to be realistic; the rules of reality may be very different from normal inside the Backfloor Building

5) The players start with a dice pool of ten six-sided dice. When you post, you describe what your character does, leading the group. You can make the post as long or as short as you want, but it must end with your character trying to do something. I will then roll the pool. Any dice that are rolled as ones are removed from the pool. I will then count the number of sixes and determine how positive the result of the action is, based on that number. IF there are no sixes, your character fails and may suffer a consequence. If there are NO dice left (you roll all ones) that consequence may be your character's death.

6)Once your group has found the elevator for the next floor, You can have your character enter the elevator at any time. However, once in the elevator you can not leave the elevator. The elevator will not move until all surviving characters are in the elevator, so if you enter before the rest of the group you may have to wait several rounds before the other characters either die or join you.

7) The dice pool resets in the elevator, but for each elevator trip you lose a dice. For example, after floor 13 your dice pool will start at nine, then the next floor will start with eight, and so on. Floor one will start with a dice pool with only one dice.

8) Each player starts with one personal dice and may earn additional personal dice. At the end of a post, the posting player may choose to add any personal dice to the dice pool. Once added, you cannot take personal dice out of the pool.

9) If the pool is every empty when players are still seeking the exit from a floor and no personal dice are available, a player will be given one virtual dice to roll for the pool. For the virtual dice, on a roll of two, three, four, or five the player's character blacks out and wakes up, mysteriously, in the elevator leading to the next floor. A one means the player's character dies, a six means the player's character succeeds and stays with the group.

10) Each character will have a hoped for item or event. If this thing is found, the player will automatically get a personal dice and additional personal dice may be awarded. This hoped for thing may be something the character is not even consciously aware of that they are hoping for.

The hoped for thing can NOT be something that significantly changes or breaks the game. It can be something like a briefcase of diamonds, a cell phone that has just enough power and signal for one brief call to someone outside the building, or a meeting with a long lost family member. If a character manages to find their hoped for item, it will result in a personal dice for that character and additional personal dice may be given to any characters who helped the character.

The laws of reality are warped inside the Backfloor Building, so the hoped for item/person/event does not need to be realistic but must be a concrete thing. A briefcase of diamonds, a meeting with a long lost family member, or a cell phone that can be used to make a brief call to one person outside of the building are all valid hoped for items. The phone call will NOT be able to summon a team of SWAT police to break into the building and your long lost family member is not Angus Mc Guyver with a backpack full of duct tape and a mythril swiss-army knife.
