Quiet on Set

Opening a thread for Quiet on Set, the docuseries examining the abusive culture that happened behind the scenes on kid’s live-action TV shows at places Nickelodeon under Dan Schneider’s tenure.

The really disgusting part (but also not really surprising, given John Kricfalusi) is Schneider wasn't the only scumbag at Nickelodeon.

I haven't been able to watch the documentary, but I was curious who the actors were that supported Brian Peck, if they mentioned them at all.

Found out two of the actors were James Marsden and Alan Thicke. Eesh...

My understanding was they were working on false information.

The classic problem is that Peck probably was genuinely nice to them. Same deal with Weinstein.

Situations like this it's often not just "he seemed nice" but they were work buddies who got a beer afterward and felt like trying to defend a friend. Thus you get people like Schneider or Weinstein where careers and media empires were built on them, then you learn afterward how deep the corruption goes.

I might check out the documentary but it's always disheartening to see it all compiled together like this.

Apparently Marden and Peck were friends since they were teenagers… yikes.

Is Brian Peck related to Josh? I've honestly never heard of him before this scandal.

So far it seems like Joanna Kerns is the only one to express regret about supporting Peck, and confirms the earlier statement that she was fed misinformation.

I read that Bell did a follow-up interview on a podcast saying that none of the (still living) people who supported Peck have tried to reach out to him to apologize.

Real Jimmy Saville vibes there.

Also, I double checked this to make sure I was remembering correctly, because I didn't want to slander someone, but Drake Bell has had some sexual misconduct allegations against himself. Makes me think its a situation of someone who was abused going on to become an abuser.

Read the letters that were written in support for Brian Peck. Two things I notice.

1. I get the feeling these letters were "scripted" in some way. They all seem very formulaic. Like they were instructed by someone to write certain things in a specific order. Who they are, how they know Peck, their thoughts on him, why they think he's innocent, etc. They almost all follow that format.

2. Joanna Kerns said she was fed misinformation about Brian Peck. I can only guess that means she and the others were told Peck did something else, likely less severe than child molestation, but still serious enough to warrant going to prison for, but none of the letters really address what his crime was/is. Just variations of "whatever he did" or "this bad illegal act", etc. That feels very suspicious to me, and again leads me to wonder if these letters were directed in some way. Like maybe they were told "don't specifically mention the crime we told you Peck in under arrest for".

I was mostly going off of something I had just read on Reddit about possible ties between Saville and the "Yorkshire Ripper". From some googling since, it seems to be only covered by British tabloids, so it should be taken with a grain of salt.

But generally, without getting into grisly details, Saville had a psychological profile reminiscent of that of a Serial Killer.

And so a sexual abuser being friendly with John Wayne Gacy made me think of Saville.

x(a bunch) No, Brian Peck and Josh Peck have no relation from what I can tell, just a coincidence

I feel like most letters like that are "scripted" in some degree. Either a lawyer wrote it directly or a lawyer edited it before release. It's the same when actors or musicians make formal apologies, its usually scripted.

Oh this is upsetting.

One of the young actresses on Naked Bros Band said she was pressured into kissing an adult man. For the record, Schneider was not involved with that show.

Bumping. Dan Schneider has responded. He is saying that some of the more controversial lines should be cut retroactively from these shows.

Kinda weird that they haven't been edited out already. Especially since they retroactively added edits to certain episodes of Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Angry Beavers, and Invader Zim ages ago.

You know humanity, I'm kind of sort of getting the feeling that taking a massive industry known for providing huge financial incentives to individuals for performing and producing widely-available content, demanding colossal work schedules and a delicate work/life balance, and throwing this into the reach of small children who have to fly out and be under the supervision of adults with a large amount of individual control over a wide filming set/studio, and leaving said children in their care for lengthy periods of time with the threat of non-disclosure agreements hanging over their heads might actually be a recipe for disaster and abuse.

Jennette Mccurdy's book I'm Glad My Mom Died says a lot.

It's a shame a lot of my parasocial Nickelodeon memories of these shows were tainted by a lot of abuse, but it's kind of not surprising. I guess the world really was different back in 2001-2012.

Josh Peck and this Brian Peck guy having the same last name is unfortunate.

I don't like or sympathize with a lot of celebrities, but I take Miranda Cosgrove as the exception and I'm glad she hasn't reported having any significant issues with Nickelodeon while still making money. She, Jennette, and Nathan all seem to be doing well.

I actually was curious if Victoria Justice has said anything about Quiet On The Set given how a few years ago she had been asked about Dan Schneider's behavior, and she gave a very "he was fine to me, so he must be a good person" response.

Guess I'm not the only one wondering.

There's some speculation that she may have been another person that was given hush money.

I mean I get wondering, but she doesn't have to respond. Like it seems weird to single her out specifically and not someone more famous like Liz or Ariana from the same show. Who have also never spoken about it to my knowledge.
