I do like mystery stories. And the occasional horror story.

Besides, previous experience has taught me that boobs alone are not enough to make a series enjoyable.

Okay, while the title sounds super generic, I might try checking out Mysterious Disappearances. For... reasons.

I really don't know why they went with that title. The JP actually translates to 'Anomalies, Maidens, and Spiritings Away', which is much more striking

Horizon on/in the Middle of Nowhere is legitimately good though?

[up] None of the characters were particularly interesting - and Torii having a default facial expression that made me want to punch him didn't help- the main conflict is hard to get invested in - in large part because the main characters are trying to stop an apocalypse that is as vaguely defined as possible - and the whole thing is shot through with an uncomfortable Japanese nationalism, with the heroic Japanese characters having to defeat those evil, eeeeeevil Europeans!

And naturally, the Japanese characters always completely stomp any non-Japanese character in a fight, because Shinto gives you the most powerful magic in existence. And that last part isn't me being snide, it's an explicitly stated rule of the setting.

I do like it better than some of these isekai series, but I'd like to ask; What do you like about it?

I need to rewatch it but I like the character designs (Futayo has been my background on every laptop I've owned since I first watched the anime.) as well as the core cast themselves and the way their interact with and bounce off each other. The plot may be a bit generic but I don't really mind that either. Might just be nostalgia speaking but I don't really have a problem with Horizon being the type of show it is. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece or anything but it's just a fun action anime.

I pesronally really liked Horizon. It's one of that titles that people either love or hate. To bad they teased S3 at the end of S2 just to never make it (all we got is a short OVA with recam of LN final a few years later).

Since they'd gotten two of seven Plot Coupons by the end of the second season, I assume Horizon... could have run for quite a while longer. And while I didn't like the series all that much, it does suck for the people who did like it that it never got close to a resolution.

Got the main staff for Highspeed Etoile! ...It's the duo behind the Kingdoms of Ruin anime

Recent disasters aside, they do have okayish individual histories. Both largely specialize in moderately trashy bishoujo series, though

New trailer for Unnamed Memory. It spoils basically the entire fucking season. evil grin

I saw Crunchyroll's blurb for Train to the end of the world. It looks like it might be interesting, but I'm not sure if it's supposed to be a "solve the mysteries of this world" show or a "cute girls doing cute things on a train" show.

With MAL already shifting to Spring 2024, so will I! Time to reveal my picks:

     From Previous Cours
  • KonoSuba S3: Back for more isekai comedy stuff! Can't wait!!
  • BNHA S7: At this point, I'm just watching out of obligation, but let's see how this goes!
  • The Misfit of Demon King Academy S2 2nd cour: Let's hope that there won't be any troubles in airing this time...
  • Tsukimichi S2 2nd cour: For me, it was overshadowed by other interesting picks last cour. I doubt it would be any different this cour, but then again, syudou is back to do this cour's OP, so I bet it will be hype!
  • Dungeon Meshi 2nd cour: AHH DUNGEON MESHI! Definitely liked the 1st cour, so of course I'll be excited for this one!
  • Sengoku Youko 2nd cour: One of the anime that I like that I will only catch on streaming! Why do TV schedules have to overlap?
     Debuting This Cour
  • Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru: Why not! Shimazaki is on main, so is Akari Kitou, and I've seen Liar Liar. I should be fine with this!
  • Shuumatsu no Train Doko e Iku?: Because I like trains and apocalyptic settings!
  • The Banished Former Hero Lives as He Pleases: Seasonal dose of reincarnated fantasy + Shouta Aoi on main! This'll be fun...
  • Dainana Ouji: Another dose of reincarnated fantasy with Makoto Koichi on main! Ok...
  • Bartender: A nice anime to chill and learn about cocktails!
  • WIND BREAKER: By far, my most anticipated anime of the season. It's even scattered EVERYWHERE I GO; I CANNOT IGNORE THIS! Even planning to read the adapted chapters as it goes AND get into Natori, who's doing the OP!
  • Girls Band Cry: I don't care if it's full 3D at this point + More rock music to listen to is a plus for me!
  • The Fable: The plot is interesting, but I would need the utmost concentration for this given that this is a Disney+ exclusive...
  • Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai: The visuals look interesting! Let's see how this goes, but it's likely that I will only catch this on streaming given that it's airing at the same time as The Fable, and I cannot miss The Fable at all costs.
  • Sentai Daishikkaku: Interesting premise + I ended up getting into Tatsuya Kitani in preparation for this. It's not only a Disney+ exclusive, but also an anime airing on Sunday afternoon, which means that this is going to be a pain to watch (as someone that refuses to get Disney+), but I will see this through!
  • Tensei Kizoku, Kantei Skill de Nariagaru: Another dose of reincarnated fantasy mainly to fill voids.
  • Tadaima, Okaeri: HUZZAH FOR MORE BL ANIME! It's my first Omegaverse one, so it'll be rather interesting!
  • Boukyaku Battery: The premise is interesting + Mamoru Miyano IS BACK!
  • Seiyuu Radio no Uraomote: If anything, this might as well help with learning about seiyuu radio!
  • Mysterious Disappearances: The one supernatural anime I will be watching! The premise got me interested!
  • Kaijuu No. 8: Of Shounen Jump (well, Jump+, but whatever) + action likely on par with JJK, but did they really have to get Western artists to do the OP and ED?? Well that will be for me to judge!
  • The New Gate: The plot may be ... ehh, likely not that outstanding, but with Kenshou Ono on main and Sou on OP, maybe I could get something out of this...
  • Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Omou: Not only BL this cour but GL too! Another anime that I must not miss!!
Had to debate with myself on whether or not to include Yozakura Family, but I ended up deciding against it due to the airtime and the premise.

Time to bask in the springtime sun. Or not, because there's anime to watch. Random Curiosity's preview for Spring 2024 is now available for your reading pleasure.

Excited about

  • Spice And Wolf: What else is there to say but AAAAHHHHHH
  • Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai: Seems like this will be a cute roma— did you say the lead girl is voiced by Kana Hanazawa? My weakness!
  • The Fable: Sometimes I'm glad I don't dig much into what's airing in what season, because this was a pleasant surprise! There are a lot of untranslated chapters so I never got to finish the manga.
  • Hibike Euphonium S3: Another pleasant surprise! This is, in my opinion, one of KyoAni's best works alongside Nichijou and Hyouka. I am beyond thrilled to rejoin Kumiko and the rest of her club as they make waves by making music.
  • Konosuba S3: The king of isekai comedies is back! I missed these goofballs. The Megumin spinoff was amusing but it just didn't have that manic energy.

Optimistic about

  • Henjin no Salad Bowl: I jive with the author's brand of humor a lot, so toss me into this salad.
  • Astro Note: Gives me kooky 90s romcom vibes, in a good way.
  • Mission: Yozakura Family: Missed the boat on this one for some reason, and I don't intend to miss out again. I'm not sure if this leans more into action shonen or comedy, but either way, we're usually in good hands when it comes to JUMP.
  • Blue Archive: Finally an adaptation about a gacha game I actually play.
  • Unnamed Memory: Now this is the kind of spice I like. A king who's cursed with killing any woman he marries, falling for a powerful witch who rejects his advances. I am instantly hooked.
  • Date A Live V: Season 4 surpassed expectations by significantly shaking up the "conquer the girl of the week" formula and dropping some heavy lore bombs, and fingers crossed that this latest season will carry that momentum.

Cool about

  • Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?: All aboard the train running through the alien-infested apocalypse, alongside girls who are definitely too young to be dealing with the mess.
  • Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru: Because they refuse to greenlight another season of No Game No Life.
  • Wind Breakers: The hope is that the writers don't try to overcomplicate the story, and just distill it down to street punks butting heads with other street punks.
  • Maou no Ore ga Dorei Elf: It's kinda sad how I know the word "dorei" so well now... anyway the framing of this relationship is iffy at best, but the potential for hijinks is high.
  • HIGHSPEED Etoile: Between Akiba Maid Wars and Bravern, Cygames productions might not turn out to be good per se, but they are consistently interesting. I'll take this for a drive.
  • Yoru no Kurage wa Oyogenai: Looks stylish as heck, and it's the type of feel-good show that's right in Dogakobo's wheelhouse.
  • SHINKALION Change the World: As always, I'm obliged to watch any mecha anime that comes out. This probably won't be another Bravern-level surprise, but it could still strive to be above average.
  • Go! Go! Loser Ranger!: All I know is that this is a parody of sentai penned by the mind behind Quintessential Quintuplets.
  • Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again: The concept is certainly interesting, the question is if it continue to be interesting for a whole cour. Maybe it'll get by with the pure force of wholesomeness.
  • Mushoku Tensei S2 Part 2: Part one of season two was the lowest point of the series, so it can only go up from there. At least that's what my friends say. We'll see.
  • RINKAI!: Yowamushi Pedal, girl version.
  • Seiyuu Radio no Uraomote: The two lead girls seem to be constantly snapping at each other's throats, which probably means they like each other very much. Have to wonder how deep this will dive into the voice acting industry.
  • Sasayaku You ni Koi wo Utau: A misunderstood expression of admiration results in a whirlwind of emotions. Sounds good.
  • Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc: This is seriously gonna be a whole season centered on a training arc? Okay then.

Lukewarm about

  • Bartender: Kami no Glass: The subject matter is outside my tastes, but it still could get me drunk.
  • Lv 2 kara Cheat datta Motoyuusha Kouho no Mattari Isekai Life: I've seen the name floating around here and there, and figured I could give it a shot.
  • GIRLS BAND CRY: Hey if the songs rock, I'll keep buying the metaphorical tickets.
  • THE iDOLM@STER SHINY COLORS: It's finally time to get acquainted with the Shiny Colors posse. Hope this is better than the last idolmaster anime whose name I already forget.
  • Oi! Tonbo: I don't know if I have the willpower to watch a golfing anime without underground deathmatches, crazy special moves and silly lesbians.
  • One Room, Hiatari Futsuu, Tenshi-tsuki: Seems like one of those "healing" anime? Gotta vibe check this one.
  • Karasu wa Aruji wo Erabanai: I'm a bit spent on feudal Japan settings. It's gonna run for 20 episodes though, so perhaps I can hope for higher quality of writing.
  • Tonari no Youkai-san: Seems cozy enough, but I fear it might not do much to hold my attention. The youkai-themed slice of life have been getting kinda same-y.
  • Vampire Dormitory: I guess there's always an audience hankering for hot vampire guys.
  • Boukyaku Battery: It's baseball, which already docks it a few points on my personal hype scale.
  • Kaii to Otome to Kamikakushi: Apparently vague occult stuff with generous amounts of ecchi? Not sure what to make of that.
  • Viral Hit: The webtoon dragged on longer than it should have, but this is only covering the early parts, so we'll get to focus on the martial arts stuff. If the animations and choreography are good, I'll bite.
  • Maoh Gakuin no Futekigaosha: Season two lost a lot of the ham that made season one so entertaining, and we were left with a speeding trainwreck of barely stitched together plot points. And I don't think this is the season it bounces back.
  • Kaiju No. 8: There was a time when I would be looking forward to this, but the manga has been mediocre for a while now, and that flame has fizzled out. That said, with Production IG at the helm, and considering the material the anime will cover, perhaps some sparks of brilliance can be salvaged.
  • The New Gate: Hey, I know this! This is probably gonna suck but I'll try and watch some of it for nostalgia's sake.

Could do without

  • Tensei shitara Dainana Ouji Datta node, Kimama ni Majutsu wo Kiwamemasu: Isekai schmisekai.
  • Dekisokonai to Yobareta Moto Eiyuu wa, Jikka kara Tsuihou Sareta no de Suki Katte ni Ikiru Koto ni Shita: All these poor exiled dudes. But I must banish this as well.
  • Touken Ranbu Kai: I had my fill of blade boys from the previous anime.
  • Yuru Camp: Still have to finish season two.
  • Re: Monster: Sorry but the manga is garbage. Even Redo of Healer is better than this slop.
  • Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken: Haven't been keeping up with the anime.
  • Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: Not really interested in watching whatshisface Gary-Stu his way through the world again.
  • Himitsu Aipri: I honestly didn't understand what this was supposed to be about.
  • The Duke of Death and his Maid: Didn't get past three episodes of the first season.
  • As a Reincarnated Aristocrat, I'll Use My Appraisal Skill to Rise in the World: S'alright. Just not interested in retreading the manga.
  • Tadaima, Okaeri: A BL anime that has guys literally categorized into alphas and betas. That is hilariously on the nose.
  • Black Butler: Confession time: I have not watched a single episode of Black Butler
  • My Hero Academia S7: Been sticking to the manga.

Relatively fewer shows I'm excited for, from a cursory preview, but my hype is sky high for those few shows. Spice and Wolf, can you believe it.

Mission: Yozakura Family: Missed the boat on this one for some reason, and I don't intend to miss out again. I'm not sure if this leans more into action shonen or comedy, but either way, we're usually in good hands when it comes to JUMP.

It’s definitely more heavy on the action, especially in later arcs, though the comedy is pretty great too.

And yay, finally someone hyped for UM. evil grin Still worried the pacing though, considering they’re adapting the entire first half (which is three 400-page thick volumes).

…Also, I wouldn’t mind if they toned down or altered some of Oscar’s… questionable behavior.
