Seeds of Despair, Blooms of Hope (interest check)

"Misery is after all, what makes us human. Not all humans will know happiness, but even the happiest human will know despair."

Those are the last words you hear from the man sitting on the other side of the table as you begin to feel a tightness in your chest. You grasp at yourself, feeling the slithering vines pulsing from the new growth inside of you.

"Your despair is fertile ground for the seeds of change, let go of all of this and simply allow yourself to act as the seeding pot for something magnificent."

Your vision narrows to a pinhole as you feel the vines wrapping around your bones, feel all the pain and misery that had eclipsed your life being drained away as the growth continued. Maybe he was right, maybe this was better. You wouldn't have to worry anymore about your shitty job, your 'friends' who never bothered to contact you, your family.

Your family.

Your sister.

You clench your hand into a fist and slam it down onto the table, causing the plates and cups to hop as you struggle once more. Maybe it would be easier, but there is something you can't abandon, a reason to keep going. The vines halt, withering down to nothing.

"You're making a mistake friend. To struggle is pointless, this is the ultimate kindness."

Your vision finally comes back, and you glare at the thing sitting across from you, wearing your face and looking at you with eyes full of pity. You clench your right hand, and the chair on the opposite side of you shatters as if struck by a falling anvil, but the figure still stays, albeit faded.

"Your choice I suppose. But if you come to regret it, I will always be waiting."

The figure faded, and the object in your chest pulses, a source of power now rather then an all consuming seed. You look around, noticing others in the cafe with thorn tendrils pushing out of their bodies, wrapping around and turning human forms into parodies of themselves, fully bloomed Fallen. You close your eyes and stand up, focusing on the newly gained power and prepare yourself. Your life is in your hands now, the easy road is all but blocked off.

Time to make your own.

It happened one day, a metaphysical infection struck humanity like a bolt of thunder from the sky. The Despair phenomenon, manifesting as a growth appearing within the bodies of the inflicted that fed from the despair, pain, and other negative emotions within humans and converting them to Fallen, monstrous beasts that seek only to destroy the world around them.

The phenomenon would strike at random, hitting places as small as a coffee shop and as large as a sports stadium, with a total infection rate of eighty percent. However that twenty percent, those who can overcome the despair that the seed feeds on develop strange and supernatural abilities classified as Blooms, and are targeted by the Fallen first and foremost. Those who survive these events are picked up by the international agency known as Gardener, a task force created to investigate the Despair phenomenon and destroy any Fallen created from it.

With a power coming from a source that is still a total mystery you must now survive in a world undergoing a rapid change, a war of those fallen to their despair and those who grasp for hope.
