Enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting to. It probably helps that I just finished a Star Wars rewatch and was still in the mood for this type of scifi, but still.

It's not without its flaws, but I'm genuinely looking forward to Part Two. I'm not sure yet if I'll watch the extended cuts, but I think my mom will want to, so I may as well.

I’m going to be honest: the movie is mid.

It has some great visual and an intresting ensemble of characters I want to like. But in the end the story is very paperthin due to the lack of worldbuilding behind this universe and the the characters themselves not being as developed beyond their archtypes. Like I get its only the first part and all but aside from maybe Jimmy I honestly don’t really care for any of the heroes in the movie.

After all this hype I thought it was going to be this original sci-fi epic that won’t be anything like the big budget Hollywood films; but instead I got a “We Have Dune At Home” type movie.

[up]That’s bad since Zach Snyder’s one schtick he still relies on is getting a reaction. It sounds like a worse problem of what Army of the Dead had.

I kind of want this movie to do well because even if I don’t like Synder, I respect that Synder’s movies are distinct from other directors. He actually has a style. Love it or hate it.

I felt like his particular 'flair' was kind of weak, here. Most of the slo-mo shots seemed like they just happened whenever, not really emphasizing anything. Scenery and accompanying shot framing was hit-or-miss, use of color was pretty unmemorable...

I don't want to say the whole thing felt AI-generated, but it kind of did in places.

Any good points this movie has get countered because we know there is 'A Better Longer R Rated' version already complete and ready to go, so many people are out there going...what's the point of this version if you are going to put out a 'better version' in a month or so? Its hard to try and enjoy this knowing you are in essence watching a rough/early cut and a newer better one is coming.

This movie did nothing for me but somehow it does make me really hopeful for the sequel I suppose?

Like, this really did feel like a Part 1 and it was derivative and had pacing issues and blah blah but I'm hopeful that it means that Part 2 can really be something. There's potential here and I'm just... hopeful.

This has the caveat that if Part 2 isn't better then it will retroactively make Part 1 way worse for me. I can forgive a lot of buildup for a strong payoff but a lot of buildup for something bad makes the buildup worse in hindsight (hello, Game of Thrones!).

I haven't seen this movie yet, but since there's supposed to be a part 2, I guess I'll wait until part 2 comes out before I watch this movie. But I do have a question about this movie: did part 1 felt as complete as Dune (2021)?

Genuine question are people suprised this is bad. The issue with Zack is well he's a great gorgeous cinematrogoher. He's always been a not very great writer and it shows. It's why I don't know why he doesnt give that to someone else

[up]He hasn't exactly brought his A-game on the cinematography either, what with the really crappy slo-mo shots.

As loud as the Snyder fans and the Snyder haters are, there's a quiet majority that want to like him. He seems like a good guy and good to work with. I'd argue that until this movie, nothing he's made was uninteresting at least. I even genuinely liked his Owls Of Gahoole movie where a premise that is inherently goofy really worked with his style.

... huh. Now that I mention it, I kinda think that after 300, that's probably the movie of his that I straight up enjoyed the most.

I think that particular movie, having the hard limitation on runtime and no chance of a director’s cut was actually a large benefit for him. It forced him to actually prioritize and pay attention to what was needed.

[up][up] Just read this guardian article noting Rebel Moon and Synder being pretty much critic proof. Although it's got plenty of bad reviews it's been watched by a lot of people and that's pretty much the metric Netflix uses and wants. It just wants something lots of people will watch at least once, often enough that people keep their subscriptions, after all.

There's also a bit when Christopher Nolan thinks all modern comic films borrow from Synder. (Which considering the large number of bombs/under performances recently I find hilarious)

If nothing else, Rebel Moon was not boring. I just thought it was kind of bad, and I feel I've already forgotten most of it, even though I've seen it only two days ago.

A show might have given the characters (and the setting itself, really) more time to shine, so maybe?

I don't really consider myself a Zack Snyder fan (or a hater, for that matter). I don't tend to enjoy a lot of his movies but there is something about his style that makes me come back and see if I'll like this new movie better. There were parts of his Justice League that I did really enjoy, but it was buried in so much other stuff I didn't care for that I haven't rewatched it.

His Guardians of Ga'Hoole movie is probably my favorite of his, changes to the source material aside. I just appreciate that he was given "epic fantasy with owls" and just went "You got it, boss" and took it seriously rather than winking at the audience over how silly the concept is.

While I'm more-so still on the Enjoyed It side for Rebel Moon Part 1, I do think Part 2 could make or break it for me. Part 1 was basically all setup, so I really hope the payoff is worth it.

Oh, definitely. It would give the characters some time to actually interact with each other, rather than just doing some cool thing for their introduction and then just fading into the background.

[up][up][up]no just him, a lot of devs and other director seen to have a good opinion of zacks, I remenber people thinking the watchmen show did a take that to him only for the creator to clarify that no, he didnt, he will be clear if he would and that he thought zack adaptation was the best hollywood could do with the source material.

[up]Agree, Zack really is all or nothing kind of guy and clearly he want to put EVERYTHING, his aproach work better for a show than a movie.

That doesn't surprise me at all. A lot of people who dislike Snyder seem to see insults aimed at him in certain DC works where none was intended. Young Justice's third season had a conversation about Superman and Batman fighting which prompted two different articles about how this was an obvious Take That! to Snyder. The Superman & Lois tie-in comic had a scene where Clark saves a bus which many interpreted as a specific jab at a well-known scene from Man of Steel and even a fight in Injustice is viewed as a jab at the destruction from that movie.

It seems it's not enough for some Snyder haters to dislike his work, they have to convince themselves every other creator in the world hates him as much as they do to feel some form of validation.

There is a jab in Harley Quinn, but it's a lot more at his incredibly obnoxious fans than anything.

Most of the (clear and definite) jabs are like that, where they don't really talk about him or the movie, it's stuff like, in the Barbie movie, a reference to having to pretend to like the Snyder Cut to get a Ken to start blathering on about it in order to distract him and it's in a mix of other jabs like the annoying Godfather fans.

And it is totally true that Snyder has one of the most annoying hardcore fanbases in cinema these days.

Yeah I think people do think he's a nice and reasonable guy. It's just his fandom can be toxic as hell.

The boys also did jab at this a lot from dawn of justice title, to release the sydner take and etc, but then again Boys have abone to pick against Cinematic universe and isnt picky to claw at marvel at times.

There is also this tendecy of fandom to asume creator are very much aware of all thing that happen at fandom or share the same opinions. I know Aaron dewonski bowen said as sort about how people GW(creator of warhammer) are very much unware of memes about the games.

Here is the same, is clearly opinion of the net and opinion of hollywood of zack tend to be very diferent really.
