From the work page: Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You (スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり, Super no Ura de Yani Sū Futari, "Behind the Supermarket, Smoking With You") is a 2022 Slice of Life web manga.

The manga centers around manga follows Sasaki, an exhausted businessman in his 40s working in a toxic company with equally toxic bosses and clients. The only source of small respite in his life is Yamada, the beautiful cashier of a supermarket he frequents, and her warm, bright smile.

One day he fails to find her and accidentally ends up going to the back of the supermarket, where he meets a young woman named Tayama, a cool, wild, teasing, and all around complete opposite to Yamada. Despite that, Sasaki and Yamada starts an odd friendship that grows more and more as the manga goes on.

Oh, and Tayama and Yamada turns out to be the same person.

With the introduction out of the way, here's why I really started this thread:

This video is a perfect introduction to the manga - it sure was for me - but I also am certain that since he's covering this manga with a dedicated video, it will get an anime adaptation in a year or two.

It’s pretty great that it manages to keep the age gap relevant while selling the growing relationship (though it largely helps they’re both adults).

Yeah, good point - seems like a lot of problematic age-gap romance in anime/manga are usually because one of them (almost always the girl) being still in school.

Still, I would've find it more comfortable if the age gap between Sasaki and Yamada/Tayama was a little bit smaller. The former is 21 years older than her, which as pointed in the trope page, making him really old enough to be her father.

Thank God it's mostly the latter who has more romantic interests in the former. I've heard and personally witnessed so many cases in RL where old pervy guys hitting on women young enough to be their daughter.

The first volume was actually officially translated/released in my country and it did have some funny extra chapters. One of them reveals that if Sasaki turned out to be a perv, Yamada/Tayama was perfectly ready to beat the shit out of him and drive him away.

Remember it being joked when we got a glimpse of her parents that there might be a bit of Like Parent, Like Spouse in play (in addition to the Forgotten First Meeting).

Is that so? Fascinating...!

So far I read the first volume at least three times by now. For some reason, though, I really love whenever Tayama does her "Mwa ha ha ha" laugh, to the point where I even bookmarked the pages when that happen.

If-no, when this manga gets an anime adaptation, I really wish that the voice actress for Tayama is someone who can do both soft, high pitched voice and much lower, husky voice.

By the way, the trope page has been significantly expanded if you want to take a look.

It's becoming increasingly clear that Yamada needs to make a move, or else Sasaki needs to click his memories together. Which first, though.

Huh, didn't notice that and good job there!

Also, this might be a really stupid thing to say about this manga...but I kinda hope that either one or both of the leads quit smoking at some point of the story. You know, health issue and whatnots.

Or maybe they could do that at the last chapter or something.

Sasaki had his health scare already, so I guess it would be Yamada's turn.

You'll notice that their activities involving each other have slowly expanded beyond a quick smoke in the back.

Next predicted step is that they finally have a "playdate" somewhere beyond the confines of the store...or they bump into each other far off from either of their jobs. Wouldn't be surprised, however, if Yamada shows up at Sasaki's job at point. Really hope the author doesn't start a love triangle with Sasaki's junior at the office. Really hope she just admires him, Yamada has another brief fit of jealousy, and that is the end of it.

Goto and Obata I can see having legs. She's given him the hint, after all.

Also, man, the second volume of the manga was supposed to be (officially) released in my country sometime in September. Why is there still no confirmed date, arrrgggghhhh!!!! >:[

I could have sworn the update schedule was much faster at one time. Did something happen?

Awwwww fuck yeaaaahhhh!!!

The volume 2 was officially released in my country and I pretty much bought it the very day it was released.

And wow. The bonus chapter for volume 2 includes how Sasaki started smoking.

Despite being massive age difference of 45 and 24, seems like Tayama is getting more and more thirsty for Sasaki every volume.

This is one of those works that I can imagine...exactly how it would play out if this was an NSFW work.

They sure would be doing more than smoking behind the supermarket...

Read a couple of chapters, we meet Daigoro's owner (who also happens to be Oona's fan) and Sasaki has deal with a drunk Tayama.

Oh man. The release date of third volume in my country isn't even announced yet. I bought the first two volumes the day they were released, and wait for the third one is killing me. XP

Gotou wants her romance story and Maezawa's mistake prolonged the secret for a bit longer (but it's definitely in Sasaki's head now). Also, new character.

Between the health scare and certain comments (mainly from Yamada), part of me is wondering if if the story is foreshadowing Sasaki possibly dying.

Aiiiight, the third volume is finally released in my country!

I wonder if this volume will include the wedding ring incident?

Caught up on the last couple of chapters. Obata and the new girl are aware of the Yama/Taya deal with Sasaki. We also learn Yamada likes lightning while Sasaki is scared of it.

Seems like it’s less about Sasaki figuring it out and more when he voices his suspicions. Yamada is also feeling guilty about not remembering what she said to Sasaki to make him fond of her.
