I think the Duplicate tropes discussion thread is a much better place to ask about duplicates and tropes distinctions.

Synchronicity told me to take this to Trope Talk, so here I am.
Burgeoning trope in question: Symbolic Mirror Reflection
How should we differentiate between this and The Mirror Shows Your True Self? I was advised to gain a consensus interpretation of the current scope and definition.
Right now, the description looks like this.
When you look in the mirror, you usually see just yourself (and sometimes someone else behind you, or even a ghost). Other times however, what is supposed to be you on the mirror is something else, either as a manifestation of what you're currently pondering, or your own mind making things up, ending with seeing any of the following instead:
Doesn't necessarily have to be a mirror. A pool, a glass pane, or any other reflective surface will also suffice, as long as you're supposed to be able to see yourself on it. Whether that self exits the mirror or not is another trope entirely.
Potential Sister Trope or Super-Trope to The Mirror Shows Your True Self, which is where the individual that's supposed to be you in the mirror really is who you are. In this trope, that may not necessarily be true, as demonstrated with the examples above. Often invoked alongside Juxtaposed Reflection Poster. May be related to Residual Self-Image.
Never thought just how much buzz this prospective trope would've stirred up.
