Even by the genre's standards, Cyberpunk 2020 / 2077 is kind of bleak.
Going off-topic a bit to make a comparison, but take Shadowrun. That's also a very dark cyberpunk setting, yet it somehow comes off lighter. This is despite the setting being part Cosmic Horror Story. Shadowrunners, unlike Edgerunners, can and do make a real difference. Every now and then they do runs that have major ramifications for the world and are key players in saving what's left of it. Being cyberpunk, they still don't get much for it aside from maybe getting paid. Shadowrunners don't get accolades or recognition. Comes with running in the shadows.
But Edgerunners? The best they can hope for most of the time is to live and die a legend and get a drink named after them.
Disgusted, but not surprisedOne should remember that Edgerunners can’t exactly make a big splash in canon since it’s still a prequel.
So making it about a bunch of relatively unimportant people compared to V’s time makes sense.
I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.| And in Night City, a lot of them don't survive. If one were to describe Edgerunner careers, many of them would have the same last sentence.
It's even stated in the game's opening Montage: "Where can you find all the Legends of Night City? The Graveyard.
Random musing.
While I already expressed my feeling towards THE SONG multiple times, recently I've grown fond of this song as well:
This is one of those perfect song for just mundane daily activities, not unlike how it was used in the first episode of Edgerunners.
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel. So, recently I finished the final season of Mob Psycho 100 anime.
That anime and Edgerunners both made me remember something I forgot for a long time: Just how important and powerful a good ending can be.
Among all the good anime I watched this year, Edgerunners will be among my top 5 favorite and certainly among the most memorable.
You know what. Since I watched Edgerunners English dub version, I might watch it again, this time in original Japanese dub.

Oissu!
Pretty much all the recent Dark Horse comics end in downer endings
Trauma Team, Where's Johnny, Your Voice, You Have My Word, and Big City Dreams all end very dismally
"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."
