Why are meme pages the way they are?

Hello all. Not sure if I'm in the right place, but here goes:

I'm wondering why the meme pages are set up the way they are, first listing the meme and then hiding the explanation in a labelnote. I'm guessing this is so that people can see a list of memes all at once, without having to trudge through the explanations. But this raises the question: what is the purpose of the meme pages? Are they there to teach people — presumably non-fans — about a work's prominent memes? If so, the explanations are the most important part of the page, and it's kind of a hassle to have to click individually on all the labelnotes. (I'm not aware of any way to open them all at once like folders, or unhide them all at once like spoilers.) On the other hand, if the purpose of the pages is to list a bunch of memes and then include the explanations only as a convenience to the reader, it raises the additional question of why we're catering to people who want to read a bunch of memes that they clearly already know. Is it appropriate for TV Tropes to cater first to people who just want to look up all the ways their favourite work is obliquely referenced on the greater Internet? I thought we were about teaching people, not being directories for Fan Speak.

In any event, I propose a solution (to a problem which may or may not exist): use tables! There'd be a column on the left just listing the memes, so if you wanted a simple "meme" directory, you could just read that column. And there'd be a column on the right with the explanations (perhaps in smaller text so that it doesn't mess too much with the table formatting or overshadow the meme itself). I'm curious what you guys think :)

Meme pages are just subpages for Memetic Mutation, like any other trope subpage. There's no special intent behind them.

[up][up] Our table markup is clunky and hard to use, to put it mildly. The current format is kinda clunky but I would definitely prefer it to trying to organize everything into tables.

Ah, I see. I was kind of afraid of that, knowing how this site is jerry-rigged together :/ Ah well, one for the interminable 2.0 wishlist, I guess!
